New Home For LifeFlight Proposed In Cantonment
February 1, 2018
A request is before an Escambia County board to approved a new home north in Cantonment for the LifeFlight medical helicopter currently stationed at Baptist Hospital.
The Escambia County Board of Adjustment will consider a Land Development Code conditional use request for a medical heliport, including a hangar, to be located in the Central Commerce Park off Highway 29 at 1671 Success Lane.
“Baptist Hospital’s LifeFlight is no longer able to operate from the hospital location and is seeking an alternative location in Escambia County,” according to company’s Board of Adjustment application.
If it is approved through the entire developmental process, the medical helipad could be built on a 2.35 acres. Within 1,000 feet of the property, there are only three other developed industrial parcels.
The application states the operation will not generate unreasonable noise or nuisances. Minimal on-site parking will be required and will connect to Success Drive. Emergency vehicle access will be provided on both sides of the proposed 3,000 square foot hangar and 4,000 square foot landing pad. The project also will include a 1,400 square foot office. The entire area will be behind a 5-foot chain link fence, except for the parking area.

Smart, smart, smart.
@ ron Swanson
Thanks for the splanin
Life Flight is separate from Baptist. It is owned and operated by Airmethods but continues to use the Baptist logo. I hope everyone realizes that the aircraft does transport patients to many hospitals in the region as well as respond to scenes. Patients are not brought to the base for transport.
Seriously, they will definitely need to put a medical facility there for this to work. Life Flight transports many critical patients and many will not be able to travel to keep them stabilized. Transporting a patient from helicopter to ambulance and then to hospital will lose critical time. So that being said…is that 1,400 sq ft office going to be a healthcare facility (and not just office personnel?
Only way this makes much sense is to also build a hospital close-by.
@ Robinhood……remind me when it was a common practice to steal helicopters on the north end.
Why don’t they just use the old shireff department pad at the road camp
Most people do not know that Baptist Hospital no longer owns the Life Flight Program and is actually owned by Air Methods Corp. and crew and pilots are their employees
What a plus for the Northend of the county! A central location. Now if only the Escambia County School Board would do the same!
Would this mean the patients are transported to/from the heliport by ambulance? If so, I would hope and will pray that ECSO adds more patrols here in north county, not only for common sense purposes (patrols, etc) but also to issue a ton of tickets for the drivers on Hwy 29 who fail to pull over for emergency vehicles.
I would also hope Baptist is providing plenty of their own security personnel as well as timing this relocation (if approved) to be done after most of the current improvement projects are complete between Success and Baptist Hospital.
Better put guards there OR have some one around 24/7 because IF they don’t then someone will end up breaking into the compound and will either vandalize the Helicopter OR even may try to steal it which is a common practice out in the NORTH end of the county now that the ECSO is no longer located up in Molino. All you all need to do is remember what was going on at the NEW Cantonment Ball Fields which is not too far from this location. Just saying !!
