Molino Highway 29 Crash Claims Life Of Mobile Man

February 26, 2018

A wreck Sunday afternoon on Highway 29 in Molino claimed the life of a Mobile man.

According to the FHP, 56-year old Franklin Webb was traveling east on Barrineau Road when he failed to properly yield his Toyota Tundra at a stop sign at the intersection of Highway 29. His vehicle was hit by a southbound Chevrolet Silverado driven by 49-year old Dean Dagen-Daw of Pensacola.

Webb was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Dagen-Daw and her passenger, 19-year old Kyleigh Daw, were transported with minor injuries to Sacred Heart Hospital.

A 2018 Audi Q7 driven by a Pensacola woman was struck by debris from the initial collision. No one in Audi was injured.

Alcohol was not a factor in the crash, according to the FHP.

The Molino and Cantonment stations of Escambia Fire Rescue, Escambia County EMS and the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office also responded to the crash.

And her precious young children were not hit by the truck
I think it’s time the City understands that a traffic light

First, condolences to the Webb family.

William, do you know if there were rumble strips there prior to the road being re-paved? If so, can you find out why there are none after re-paving? I think the same has occurred at the intersection of Jacks Branch and Barrineau park road.

There used to be rumble strips there. Not sure why they’re gone now.

That’s a terrible intersection. I’ve seen many accidents there over the years. Perhaps they will install a light, or a caution signal now.

Prayers for all involved. So sad to see another senseless loss. May God be with you all.

A friend came from Houston, tx. & stopped bye to see us on hwy 196
( barrineau park rd ). It was after dark when he arrived but we knew he
was coming. He came from the west and pulled right in our drive. I was
outside watching & was very surprised he came from the west instead of
from the east and hwy 29. I quickly asked why he was coming from the west
and how he found our drive so easily …..he said the auto’s GPS system had
him get-off I-10 not too many miles after Mobile Bay and wound thru many, many
turns and here he was. This was a couple years ago…..so it’s easy to see
why so much more traffic not counting the DETOUR which has increased the
traffic exponentially . I’d think a large percentage of these drivers have never
been on barrineau park rd before and have no idea of what’s ahead of them.
The speed limit is 55 MPH and I’d advise to NOT walk your dog or take a stroll
on this once quiet boulevard . Wilykyote says smart government not at work here !

Special prayers for those family’s and victims involved. Tragically this is a serious event. Please call or email Escambia county reps. It’s not just this intersection that is dangerous. Accidents every day occurring even if no construction. People are not slowing down on hwy 29. Drivers will run over u or push u out of the way by riding your .. No respect for the other drivers young or old
police need to be stationed on hwy 29. that might help. Pass out citations.

For those of you sending prayers for the family, we thank you; Franklin was my stepbrother.

    YES……….Rumble Strips

  9. Cindy on February 26th, 2018 11:16 am

Please remember family members who have lost a dear loved one are reading your comments and this may not be the best place to point fingers. It sounds like an intersection where there have been many issues in the past.

I correct myself on earlier post, it was the 9 1/2 mile light not 10 mile

I beg to differ. The light at 29 and 97 has not solved the problem. I have lived on 97 since 2004 and we still have accidents with the light to about once a month. And they are not just fender benders. Now with the light people crossing 29 are not aware of the traffic comming north and south because they are suppose to stop. Then some one runs the light and another accident. It’s not the lights it’s drivers and speed. Slow down. Pay attention.

  12. No Excuses on February 26th, 2018 8:58 am

I am with Mike. I don’t think we need a light at this intersection, I think we need more in the way of alerting drivers that there is a stop coming up. I live in Molino, and I have a hard time seeing that stop until I’m right on it. The reason I don’t get into an accident there is that I KNOW THIS about that particular intersection. Not everyone else does, or, if driving distracted, can easily miss it.

Rumble strips would at least jar someone’s attention off their phone, radio, coffee, etc., so that they know to look up and pay attention. Or better yet, two or three speed bumps to force people to slow down coming through there.

My husband and daughter we southbound on 29 and had exactly this same scenario happen to them. A truck, pulling a trailer, just blasted through the intersection without even stopping or slowing down. My husband said the driver’s face was petrified when he saw them bearing down on him as he realized that he had not stopped when he should have. Distracted driving, pure and simple. Fortunately, no one was injured in that incident and we know to pay attention to that intersection when we drive through it.

    @Brian
Detour had nothing to do with this accident.

  14. Danny Hall on February 26th, 2018 8:54 am

Simple solution. Put up caution lite, 55 mph speed limit, from cantonment to hwy 21 intersection,& have an officer posted monitoring speeders. There’s alot of activity in Molino now days. We could use some more protection up here. There’s a sub station just on the north side. Let’s put it to use. My parents, 78 & 83, live here as other family members. People fly up here on 29 both directions. 70-80 mph.

  15. Molino resident on February 26th, 2018 8:46 am

I totally agree with “Mile Away”. That would be such a simple addition and cost so little for the State of Florida. Lives will be saved.

I am not talking a regular red/green light. Just the flashing red light on the side of the road that will warn the driver of a huge intersection (to stop) ahead.

They have this same red flashing warning stop ahead sign on Pine Forest Road as you are coming up to West Roberts.

Perhaps District 5 Commissioner can contact the right people to get this done.

  16. Flo on February 26th, 2018 8:11 am

I lived on Barrineau Park Road for 33 years. Due to people not paying attention, driving 65+, now texting, on their cellphones, or not knowing the road. With more people moving north since Ivan, there are more accidents.

My hear goes out to the family and friends of Mr. Webb.

  17. willy on February 26th, 2018 8:10 am

oh yeah, let’s add yet ANOTHER stop light to the roads rather than trying to get people to be more attentive to the roads and the conditions. Don’t require folks to pay attention….put another stop light in to impede others from making progress towards their destination. Hey, let’s put stop lights in at EVERY intersection just to make sure that traffic becomes a complete gridlock and NOBODY can move. Then folks will get their guns out and start shooting their way through traffic and the gun control people will say take away the guns!! It’s all about paying attention on the road. We don’t need more red lights, we need people to pay attention to the task of driving their cars!

  18. Brian on February 26th, 2018 8:03 am

Another wreak due to detour traffic.

  19. mile away on February 26th, 2018 7:55 am

Appears that he didn’t see the stop sign. Maybe new rumble strips in the road or a caution light would help or a simple “STOP AHEAD” sign before the top of the hill.

  20. C on February 26th, 2018 7:34 am

It’s called SLOW down and PAY attention. Also, a lot of people need to learn their ROW. I live off Barrineau Park Rd and have almost been hit several times at that intersection because people think they have the ROW when they don’t.

  21. Patriot on February 26th, 2018 7:26 am

If they won’t stop for the stop sign, they ain’t gonna stop for the light everyone proposes.

  22. Richard on February 26th, 2018 6:41 am

I agree with A.Alex. if a driver will not stop at a stop sign. then they will not stop at a stop light. I pray for all involved. The only answer to preventing these wreaks is for drivers to put 100% of there attention to driving there automobile. put down the cell phone. quit thinking of anything but operating this 4000 Lbs. automobile.

  23. GH on February 26th, 2018 6:16 am

I beg to differ with A Alex, but I would guess that accidents are down by close to 75% at the Tom Thumb. Maybe William could come up with some stats for us. Used to be a wreck there almost everyday.

  24. Angel on February 26th, 2018 4:59 am

Thoughts and prayers to family of Mr Webb. As well as others involved. We DO not need any more lites. I know the traffic in the area. I also know a lite would not have prevented this. People are distracted and going too fast. I have lived here all my life I know there is a stop sign there. I stop. Unfortunately others sometimes do not, resulting in serious injury or death. A stop light will not stop this; people paying attention to the road will. What do you folks who are calling for lights want? Do you want one at every intersection? Perhaps we could position someone there with a flag to catch folks attention. Slow down, pay attention to the road. Pay attention to other drivers. End of story.

  25. Tally on February 26th, 2018 4:20 am

Thanks A Alex I’ve said for years on this site that if u put a stop sign are red light at every drive way are road the same distracted people will keep doing the same thing. Like u said red light at 97 and 29 has settle noting. People fly up their and never brake. Going south Their I move to to the far left south bound lane. people need to think of their self and other people life’s. Parents to stop drinking their coffee eating their breakfasts and texting going down the rd. Your children see you and copy all the bad habits. The laws should be unforced and tickets written.

  26. Legend on February 25th, 2018 8:59 pm

I think the biggest problem is people using better judgement when pulling onto Hwy 29 it appears you have a enough car lengths to merge into traffic but you don’t 90% of the cars, trucks, 18 wheelers etc are going 85 90 mph threw this section of 29 and your gap isn’t a gap when people are going 85-90 plus The cars appear to be so far away but when there doing 85 -90 time you pull from a dead stop there at your door. Sheffifs office or FHP need to figure out how to make people slow done and do the speed limit. Only a handful of people do the speed limit on 29 and it’s become a MAJOR PROBLEM.

  27. A. Alex on February 25th, 2018 8:43 pm

A light did not stop the bad accidents at 97 and 29. Why do people think a light will stop the ones here. 2 deaths at 10 mile rd and 29 and up goes a light, check out how many accidents still happens at 10 mile rd and 29. People are no longer set on driving alone, they are driving with so many other attentions that dri ing is at their bottom priority.

  28. Tony Powell on February 25th, 2018 7:57 pm

The severest problem at the intersection is when vehicles heading north on 29 and entering the right turn lane to turn east onto Barrineau Park Rd. from 29. Those awaiting to proceed from east side of the intersection are blind spotted by those from the south who have entered the turn lane to turn right at the intersection. The perception of those waiting is that they see a slow moving car turning right but that car can completely block seeing a vehicle on 29 heading north. The same goes for the other side of the intersection but to a lesser extent because it’s on the hill and view of south bound vehicles turning west isn’t as obstructed.

Prayers for the family. I hope we do not get any more traffic lights on Hwy 29.
