ECSO: Drunken Cantonment Man, 82, Fired Shots At His Neighbors From His Porch

February 25, 2018

A an 82-year old Cantonment man is accused of firing multiple shots at his neighbors while he was allegedly drunk.

Joseph Durwood Burdeshaw was charged with aggravated assault with a firearm, discharging a firearm while under the influence and resisting arrest. He remained in the Escambia County Jail Sunday morning with bond set at $6,000.

A neighbor who lives cross the street from Burdeshaw told deputies  he was working on a fence in his front yard  on Wiggins Lane when Burdeshaw fired multiple shots just over his head while making the statement “I will kill you”.

At least three other neighbors witnessed the incident, with two of them saying Burdeshaw went inside his home before stepping back onto his porch and firing multiple shots in the air, according to an Escambia County Sheriff’s Office arrest report.

The report states Burdeshaw refused to comply with a deputy’s commands to show his hands, and pulled away with the deputy’s handcuffs once he attempted to take him into custody.

Let’s see… Girl in previous article gets $5500 bond for bag of weed… Shooting at neighbors $6000 bond… Sounds about right… Chillin’ with some greenage $500 less than attempted murder… Only in Escambia!!

This nice man was arrested on 11/22/2015 for a FELONY Moving Traffic Violation and then he was arrested TWO (2) times for Assault. Back on 8/4/2016 he was arrested and charged with Aggravated Assault, Burglary and Violation of Probation for being in trouble before hand. Now, He has been arrested again on 2/18/2018 for Aggravated Assault, Weapon Possession, and resisting an Officer. Does not sound too nice of man to me and have some of his neighbors fooled as it seems to me.

I’ve known this man for almost 3 years, he’s a neighbor. He’s always been very sweet and loves to talk. I do know there was a lot of drama/conflict involved between him and his neighbor across the road at times. From the story posted I do feel he needs some sort of assistant and restrictions. I hope things get resolved for this man and things will look up for him.

if the older gentleman had wanted to shoot him ..He would have… He shot over his head more than once. Now if his eyesight is going …he could have thought the neighbor was taking down his fence. which if someone was taking down my fence I would try to stop them also .

People need to stop leaving rude comments none of us know exactly what has happened to this man to make him drink and act like this…everyone does not take life experiences the same he might have lost a wife or child in the past that drove him to drink..so before you make judgement walk a day in his shoes oh thats right you cant so what gives you the right to judge and talk about him

Obviously booze and guns don’t mix..at any age….he needs his gun priviledge taken away before he does shoot someone…At that age he should have known better but his drinking killed his common sense….

I agree. He has always been nice. I think there is more to the story also.

This man could have killed someone. He is clearly a danger. I don’t care how old he is.

In all honesty, this fellow has proven that he would absolutely qualify for NOT possessing a firearm.

Wonder how Grandpa likes jail so far ……..

He’s always been very friendly, there’s more to the story then what meets the eye!
Maybe we should question what was done to him to make him act that way!

How very sad that this man at 82 is still getting drunk. I’m sure his family have put up with so much over the years. Drunks are hard to be around. It’s heart breaking to see our loved ones who are up in age have no wisdom at all. I’ll never understand why people even want to get drunk, it’s a weakness they have in themselves that they can’t handle life. So sad!

I wander what time of the day this happened? I could see him being angry if it was midnight, BUT still don’t justify warning shots…

Sure do hope that new fence is high enough and made of steel.

This should be the end of his drinking and his gun.

  19. Freddie on February 25th, 2018 7:01 am

Only $6000 bond? For shooting at someone?

  20. Mike on February 25th, 2018 6:47 am

Great, now they will try raising the minimum age to buy a gun to 83……

  21. Gary on February 25th, 2018 5:27 am

Only a $6,000 bond? Seriously? What a joke.

  22. Grand Locust on February 25th, 2018 2:01 am

What a relief. Good old fashion gun violence. A little booze. A little age. However, the old standby of good fences make good neighbors did not seem to work out in this case.
