Century Post Office Ignores Presidential Order To Lower Flag To Half Staff
February 19, 2018
The Century Post Office apparently ignored a presidential order to lower American Flags to half staff to honor victims of last week’s Florida school shooting that claimed 17 lives.
Last Thursday, President Donald Trump issued a proclamation ordering flags to be flown at half staff through Sunday Monday. By Friday, the flag at the Century Post Office had not be lowered, as seen in the photograph that does show an American flag at half staff at a neighboring credit union.
“Our Nation grieves with those who have lost loved ones in the shooting at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida,” the proclamation reads.
“As a mark of solemn respect for the victims of the terrible act of violence perpetrated on February 14, 2018, by the authority vested in me as President of the United States by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, I hereby order that the flag of the United States shall be flown at half-staff at the White House and upon all public buildings and grounds, at all military posts and naval stations, and on all naval vessels of the Federal Government in the District of Columbia and throughout the United States and its Territories and possessions until sunset, February 19, 2018,” the proclamation continues.
Attempts to contact the U.S. Postal Service for comment were unsuccessful.

It probably was just a mistake. I know that they have a new employee working the front and she was not a transfer from somewhere else. She was being trained like she was brand new to the post office.
>>Know there is a Post Office at Walnut Hill, but P.O.Boxes only.
While it’s a contact post office, you can still do everything I know of there that you can at USPS post office. Mail packages, buy postage, money orders, etc.
Hope it was an error and not a show of disrespect to our Presidents orders.
Personally, we need a Post Office to serve the citizens of Davisville, Bratt and Walnut Hill and other areas in these communities.
Know there is a Post Office at Walnut Hill, but P.O.Boxes only.
Century and McDavid post offices are 9 -10 miles apart.
Seems we need to stand up for North Escambia.
A County Commissioner stated some years ago ” It is the squeaking wheel that gets the grease”.
Food for thought.
@Little Lou- If there is any blame, it’s on management, not labor. That being said, the APWU is not friendly towards the current administration; I get their newsletter every month and their stance is pretty clear.
I doubt there was any sort of negative intent with this. They came in to do their jobs like they do every day, and I’m sure they get a daily barrage of emails and directives. Errors happen.
I would be surprised that this is anything other than “I missed that directive because I was busy with work and overlooked it” or “I saw that directive, but I got busy with work and forgot.”
September 11, 2001 I went into the Courthouse and into City Hall to tell the workers there the flag needed to be lowered to half staff. Both times, they went out immediately and lowered it. I didn’t have any authority to order it, but simply to advise.
Some years it seems like it will never rise to the top again.
David for less sorrow
Only if you did their job on day you would know they bust their butt’s to get your mail to you ,,,,My Son start’s his day at 3:00 AM and he run’s Mail from Jordan St all the way to Walton Co. and Panama City then if he’s luckey drive’s back from Destin and gets FEW HOUR’S of sleep then head’s back to Destin gets the truck and starts taking Mail back to the PO’S between Destin and Pensacola….Get’s home around 7:30 PM so before people complain learn what’s involved getting your Mail to you…Thank’s from a Mom that her Son work’s his butt off!
Hopefully this is just an oversight. BUT, with as many flag poles as there are in Century, surely they had to have seen them. Hard to miss that. I mean, c’mon, there’s a flag pole at the business right next door. So surely the thought crossed their mind. Maybe they did overlook it or were too lazy. Maybe the thought someone else on staff was gonna do it. Maybe they did ignore a presidential proclamation. All we’ll probably hear in response is an excuse as to why they didn’t do it.
Guess we’ll stay tuned for their answer.
I am more than certain that the postmaster is probably not aware that she was suppose to fly it at half staff. Someone should ask her instead of making mean comments. As for the comment about the “over-paid, under-productive workers”, I know for a fact that those carriers at Century do their jobs and are hard workers. So unless you are a rural carrier I don’t think you should involve the workers in your comments. This is clearly a postmaster oversight unless she knew and didn’t do it then its her problem but don’t make mean comments about the carriers there.
No excuse for this…I am sure they got the same notice all others got… They obviously just don’t care…
Century just keeps on screwing up!
WAKE UP, Century!
Everyone that works for our post office works harder then you think,I believe it was an accident over look,
What do you expect from overpaid, under-productive workers. They can barely be bothered to get the mail out.
Don’t believe any disrespect meant just an over sight.
This is unacceptable. Solidarity is the key. How can we expect children to respect authority and follow rules, when working adults won’t do so?
Everyone knows that Century operates to the beat of a different drum.
Well if this isn’t an embarrassment.
Gotta wonder if anyone working at or patronizing the Post Office asked, “Why isn’t your flag at half-mast?” “The one next door at Pen-Air is flying half-mast”
Probably too lazy to go out and lower it.
I guess they were too concerned with their upcoming long weekend.
