Black Ice Tonight, Hard Freeze With Low In The Teens
January 17, 2018
There is a hard freeze warning and a wind chill advisory in effect. The National Weather Service is also warning of the danger of black ice tonight — residual snow and ice cover on roadways will quickly refreeze tonight, creating areas of black ice and dangerous driving conditions.
*What?…What is black ice? Black ice is a transparent sheet of ice that forms on highways and can be difficult to identify until you already driven over it. The source of black ice is melted residual glaze from freezing rain andor melted snow and sleet that re- freezes. Black ice can be especially dangerous on elevated roadways such as overpasses and inclines such as bridges. This is where many reports have come from.
*When and Where?…Black ice will form once again regionwide from 4 PM until 10 AM tomorrow morning south of Highway-84 and endure until Noon CST north of that Corridor. Local emergency management, working very closely with the NWS in Mobile, AL today have confirmed the black ice situation over most areas, and they are very concerned about the situation over the next day or so. So,
slow down and use extra precaution if you must drive.

I had to force open my frozen truck door just to be able to drive this evening and I saw black ice all along on Hwy 97 but not until I was right up on it! Wow, what a terrible decision to put thousands of kids safety in the hands of ONE PERSON!! Guess it really is possible to be educated beyond one’s common sense!
I hope Mr. Thomas is aware that me nor will my friends’ children will be attending their classes today. My son is fifteen but I still will not allow him to go outside and wait for the bus for fifteen minutes in the freezing cold and then get on the bus that will be driving on a black ice slicked road! Please think about the danger you put my family in.
This man was voted in. I’m surprised people don’t realize the school system doesn’t really care about children. I hope the school district has good insurance on those buses if one wrecks with all those children. I know that would be a heck of a claim. Real smart.
This is crazy the absences won’t be excused but they won’t cancel either this is not safe the sun has barely come up when i have to leave to take my kods to school
My kids wont be their either.
When we lived up in WA, schools would at least delay the schools. Sometimes they would cancel the northern schools instead of all schools.
It’s really unbelievable that our bus drivers are going to be forced to drive in this weather! I have to go to school even though it’ll be below freezing outside! This is messed up lol.
I can’t believe the schools in Escambia County Florida are not closed tomorrow since there is danger of black ice on the roads for in he morning
My son won’t be there!
I can’t believe the schools in North Escambia, Fl won’t be closed tomorrow. Those bridges are very dangerous to drive on.
