Two Killed In Quintette Road Crash

An early Sunday morning accident on Quintette Road claimed the lives of two people.

The two-vehicle crash was reported about 2:45 a.m. on Quintette Road near Rocky Branch Road. Both drivers were pronounced deceased on the scene.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, 31-year old Clayton Edward Shaffer of Pace was westbound on Quintette Road in a Dodge Dakota when he crossed the center line into the path of a Buick LeSabre  driven by 63-year old Larry Wayne Ellis of Milton. The vehicles collided head-on.

Walnut Hill VFD Honors Firemen, Community Members During Fish Fry

The Walnut Hill Volunteer Fire Department honored members of the community and the department during their 48th annual fish fry Saturday. And the community had a chance to meet Escambia County EMS up close and personal.

Austin Snyder was named Firefighter of the Year, an award chosen by his fellow firefighters. Andrew Peters was named Officer of the Year and recognized for his years of service to the department. Ted Bridges received the Walnut Hill Volunteer Fire Department’s Community  Service Award for outstanding and dedicated service to the community.

Hundreds of people enjoyed fried catfish or grilled chicken plates during the event, with proceeds to be used to provide assistance to displaced fire victims in the area. OneBlood’s Big Red Bus was also on hand for a blood drive.

Escambia County EMS was also be on hand with equipment and personnel, answering  questions about their new service coming to Walnut Hill and Bratt on November 13.

Tate Aggies Head Into The Playoffs

SUNDAY UPDATE: The Tate Aggies are headed to the playoffs. They will travel to St. Augustine Friday night at 7:30.

The Tate Aggies ended their regular season with a 57-13 win on the road at Smiths Station, AL. Whether or not the Aggies head into postseason play remains to be seen with a Florida High School Athletic Association announcement on Sunday.

At 6-3 overall, 2-1 in the district it was not clear Friday night if the Aggies will qualify for a playoff berth under a new mathematical points system implemented this year by the FHSAA.

The Aggies were first on the board with 10:20 on the clock in the first quarter, 8-0, before scoring another touchdown at the 6:21 mark, 15-0.

After a Smiths Station touchdown, the Aggie scored on a 48-yard pass from Hunter Riggan., 22-6. The Aggies scored on additional touchdowns from Ladarryl Page from 8 yards out in the second quarter and another run from Riggan with 30 seconds before the half. The Aggies held a commanding 43-6 lead going into halftime.

Pedestrian Struck By Vehicle On North Century Boulevard

A pedestrian reportedly suffered a minor injury after being struck by a vehicle about 7:30 Saturday night on North Century Boulevard near the Abundant Life Assembly of God. Jay Royals Are Playoff Bound

The Jay High School Royals are playoff bound according to brackets announced Sunday by the FHSAA.

The Royals (6-4, 2-2) will travel to face No. 1 seed Baker (10-0, 3-0) at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Tate High Cheerleaders Take Top Honors At Cheer For Hope Championship

The Tate High School Aggie Cheerleaders took top honors Saturday in the Cheer For Hope Championship in Biloxi.

The Tate JV cheerleaders won first place in their division, while the varsity team won first place in Coed and overall Grand Champion. The Cheer For Hope Championship is a cheerleading and dance competition for school and All Star athletes. It is a benefit event and has raised over $40,000 for charity since its inception in 2008.

The Tate cheerleaders will compete again next week in the Season Salute in Gulf Breeze.

They are preparing on the road toward a state championship with the competition to be held in Gainesville in February 2018.

The Tate junior varsity team is Coached by Annie Wiggins and the varsity team by Morgan White.

Escambia Fire Rescue Installs New Smoke Detectors In Free Program

The American Red Cross joined the Century Station of Escambia Fire Rescue in installing about 40 new smoke detectors Saturday in Century.

Escambia Fire Rescue is offering to install a new smoke detector with a 10-year battery at no charge for local residents.

Smoke alarms that are properly installed and maintained play a vital role in reducing fire deaths and injuries. According to the National Fire Protection Association, a working smoke alarm cuts the chances of dying in a reported fire in half. Almost two-thirds of home fire deaths resulted from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms.

Escambia County Jail, Road Prison And Work Release Pass Standards Inspections

The Escambia County Jail, Road Prison and Work Release Center received notification that they have again passed both the Florida Model Jail Standards Correctional Operations Inspection and Medical Compliance Inspection. The Florida Model Jail Standards are minimum standards that jails across Florida must meet to ensure the constitutional rights of those incarcerated are upheld.

These annual inspections are led by the Florida Sheriff’s Association and Florida Association of Counties, utilizing certified inspectors to ensure that the facilities and staff meet or exceed the minimum performance standards to operate a constitutional jail in the state of Florida. They include interviews with inmates and staff and review of daily operations. The team of inspectors reviewed all areas of operations from staff training, admissions, release, programs, sanitation, housing, food service, health records and security, to how medications are stored and labeled. The inspections were completed in September.
