Pickup Driver Uninjured In Incredible Crash With Log Truck (With Gallery)

December 15, 2017

A pickup truck driver was uninjured in an incredible predawn crash with a log truck on Highway 29 in Molino.

The driver of the Ford F150 rear-ended the logs on the back of the 18-wheeler on Highway 29 just south of Barrineau Park Road about 5:45 a.m. Multiple logs completely penetrated the cab of the pickup, missing the driver by mere inches. The truck was heavily damaged in the crash.

The adult male pickup driver walked away from the crash with no injuries.  The log truck driver was also uninjured.

The accident remains under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol. Escambia County EMS, the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office and the Molino Station of Escambia Fire Rescue also responded to the crash.

I’m glad that the two drivers were not injured. By shear luck or divine providence, the outcome of this accident was nothing close to typical. We need a rule change from DOT and/or the legislature to save lives. Logs should not be allowed to extend more than 18″ beyond the bumper of the trailer! Need to haul longer logs? Get a longer trailer.

I know many of you are talking about the safety devices missing or knocked off, but looking at the angle of impact on the F150 and the trees broken on the tractor trailer the only conclusion I can see is the following:
F150 in the right lane at a higher speed than the tractor trailer traveling in the left lane. Semi decides to change lanes and does not pay attention to the speed of the approaching light (time of day lights are on) weather he could see the vehicle or not the light would be clearly visible in his side mirror.
The tractor trailer then proceeded to make the lane change, causing the faster moving F150 to smash into the log hanging of the right side of the trailer (clearly visible in pictures). Due to the angle of impact the logs were pushed further to the right leaving the drivers seat unscathed.
Contributing factors being the speed of the F150 and the negligence of the tractor trailer driver. I cannot say weather the driver of the F150 was above the speed limit but he was traveling at a higher rate of speed than the semi. Clearly with the point of impact on the tractor trailer none of the required safety devices would have been removed of damaged by the accident. One can only conclude that the driver of the tractor trailer is at fault and failed to provide a safe driveling environment for other on the road.

@master mechanic…actually blinking light is mandatory day or night along with 2 flags…preferably at eye level is where I always put them so it would be at the best visible to drivers

WOW. So glad no one was injured.

  6. William2 on December 17th, 2017 9:08 am

For those of you saying that he did not have the proper flagging on the logs on the back of the trailer how do you know that the truck did not knock them off.

  7. Irene on December 17th, 2017 7:50 am

God was on this ride. Everyone should see that. “Amen”

Turns out I know the man, he’s from Jay & came into my barber shop for a haircut yesterday afternoon (just hours after the wreck). A little banged up from the airbag but no serious injurys. Thank the Lord for watching out for him & his family.
    God is good.

DOT regulations Require Red flags during daylight hours & a Red / Orange flashing lite during the hours of darkness on the end of the logs if they extend past the rear of the trailer 4′ or more.I see trailer lites on &,no lites on the end of logs.If the driver has a CDL Drivers License he & his employer know this……I’m a licensed DOT Inspector & a Master truck / Trailer Techanican.
Thank God the Ford P / UP driver walked away unscathed.

What about the length of the logs? Maybe blocked the veiw of the trailer tail lights.I see this too often in this area. If the load is to long shouldn’t an escort be required. A few tickets would get the attention of the loggers. I hope a life is worth more than 12 extra feet of tree tops.

Miracle! Hope a red flag was found on, or near one of the logs- somewhere.

I know how they feel, I had an accident in which the only part of the truck that was not damaged is where I was sitting, in the drivers seat!

Without a doubt, this is a miracle, good things happen to bad people and bad things happen to good people, Things do sometimes just happen without any rhyme or reason. I sure don’t understand why this all happened to this gentleman just to show a miracle . The ultimate miracle would have been for this misfortune to have never happened. Who was in control of that?

  23. Rev. Gene on December 15th, 2017 12:33 pm

I hope to see him in Church Sunday setting on the front row with his hand raised, because he does have something to Praise God for this Christmas season!

  24. Are u sure? on December 15th, 2017 12:13 pm

Several mornings I have watched logging trucks at this intersection “bully” their way into the right hand southbound lane, whether the person in that lane has room to move to the left southbound lane or not! Did anyone witness this being the case this morning? They get in the short hwy 29 access lane and keep on going whether the right hand lane is available or not!

Truly a blessing no one as injured.

  33. Cantonment Girl on December 15th, 2017 9:06 am

As a small child I had a Sunday school lesson. Ensley CMA. Lesson was about using fortune tellers. 3 teens were forewarned in church about fortune tellers., but went to one anyway.
They had a story told to them, one was told she had no fortune. One the way home they were behind a logging truck, a log slipped off and killed the girl that had no fortune. A true story we were told and at 56 I have never forgotten the lesson. I drive Quintette every day back and forth to my office, I NEVER get behind a log truck..
I so agree this man had MANY Angels and the Good Lord on his side!
