Sheriff, Tax Collector, Property Appraiser Return $1 Million To County

November 3, 2017

Escambia County Sheriff David Morgan, Tax Collector Scott Lunsford and Property Appraiser Christ Jones have returned over $1 million to the Escambia County Commission.

Morgan’s office returned $243,562.95; Lunsford returned $554,935.17 and Jones returned $241,588.59.

The funds come from fees generated by the offices for fiscal year 2016 –2017 in excess of budget amounts. The unused fees are then returned to the commission as the local taxing authority.

“We work hard to be fiscally responsible with the taxpayers’ money,” Lunsford said. “We are proud to be able to provide the Board of County Commissioners these funds that can be invested in local services that make Escambia County a great place to live.”

These funds are in addition to $914,107.81 returned by Escambia County Clerk and Comptroller Pam Childers, as we previously reported here.

If you don’t have all the facts, please be quiet on the matter of better pay for our LEO’s. Seasoned deputies ARE leaving the Sheriff’s Office, and one of the main reasons is for better pay…period…this is a fact.

They had the money left over in their Budgets and have to return it.

It’s not as glamorous as they were returning it out of the goodness of their hearts.

Sounds like we have been over taxed

Our glorious Sheriff just wants more money to boost his salary and perks. Remember this is the man who admitted to being crazy if he ran for a 3rd term. He had no intention of helping our deputies who do the real work in this county.. There is a reason our deputies leave and go to PPD and other agencies. One may be money but the biggest is Sheriff Grump.

Terrance, One time income can’t be used for recurring expenses. For example, it can’t be used for salaries and benefits. A few years ago the Clerk of the Court gave one time bonuses to employees rather than return it to the County. There was a lot of flack for that! There are many restrictions on how different type of revenue can and can’t be used.

Pay the deputies decently and put money towards schools. Help those teachers out and take care of the kids :)

Why do the elected officials have to put their names on the bank accounts, bills, and letterhead? I’m sure it’s probably required, but it seems unnecessary. It also gives incumbents a lot of name recognition that would be unfair come election time.

So I can expect a refund from the taxes and fees Escambia Co. charged me in excess of what was apparently necessary. I’ll keep a vigil at the mail box. HAHA good luck with that.

Returns money over budget. Needs budget increase. Huh?

Wait a minute……why is the sheriff returning money if his dept is so short of funds that he complained to the governor for more money? Something smells fishy.
