Escambia County Deputy Involved Shooting Under Investigation

October 27, 2017

A deputy involved shooting this morning in Escambia County is under investigation.

A male entered Warrington Bank on Barrancas Avenue and told the employees “you better call the police or an employee is going to get hurt”, according to Escambia County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Chip Simmons.

The suspect then left the bank and walked a short distance to the south, Simmons said, where three deputies arrived and confronted him near the Redeemer Lutheran Church and School at 333 Commerce Street.

“He claimed to have a gun; he then pulled out a gun and began firing,” the chief deputy said. “The deputies returned fire.”

The unidentified male suspect was taken to a local hospital. One of the deputies received a minor injury but was not hospitalized.

The shooting is now under investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, as is standard procedure.

    REGARDING:
“Know where in the column does it state the suspect died, so, does folks read half way through the story, and feel compelled to write a comment? Just because there is an investigation after a shooting, also does not mean someone died.”

    (Nowhere)

An attempt to commit suicide is not always successful. It still reads as if that might have been his aim.

    David for clarity

Know where in the column does it state the suspect died, so, does folks read half way through the story, and feel compelled to write a comment? Just because there is an investigation after a shooting, also does not mean someone died. At any rate, there is no telling what one will face from day to day. Put your faith in Jesus, while your still breathing His air.

@ Paul = It sure looks like a case of suicide by cop..

Paul that was my first thought also, heard of another suicide by hanging in the area not long ago but that sadness never made the news which is likely a good thing to ease the loss to family and loved ones. There are many hurting and injured people amongst us.

On the streets LEO have a strong brotherhood and cover each other’s backs in the most horrific of circumstances. You have my Thanks, Admiration and High Respect for all you do.
Unfortunately these same LEO’s have upper echelon leadership that would use them as a doormat if it meant they could get more media time or a new billboard with their face aglow.

GOD Bless all our 1st Responders and Military who protect us.

    To: Say What
Ask Sgt. Cephas if deputies go into burning buildings. After he tells you the story, you can ask the family whose lives he saved.

These deputies do an outstanding job. Too bad there is so much cronyism there.

  9. Just Saying on October 27th, 2017 4:31 pm

Yes they do! With out proper PPE too! Nothing like huffing carcinogens! I was not pointing out they don’t do anything, just saying, public servants do dangerous jobs for low salaries.

@ Just saying, police and deputies also run into burning buildings. They are usually the first ones on scene.
    Just saying…..

How do you get people to run in to a burning house or building full of who knows what, for less?

  15. Howie on October 27th, 2017 12:33 pm

Too bad the deputies didn’t get a great aim at the suspect. Wouldn’t need a trip to the hospital for injuries. Only to be identified for his funeral.

Maybe they should have called Lumon May And Begosh to handle since they think they know how to run a law enforcement agency. How do you get people to do this for 34k a year?
