Proposal Would Pay Tuition For Some At Florida Colleges

September 26, 2017

A South Florida Democrat filed a proposal Monday that calls for the state to pay the tuition costs of many students at state colleges. Rep. Shevrin Jones, D-West Park, filed the measure (HB 181), which would create the “Sunshine Scholarship Program.” Under the proposal, the state would pay 100 percent of tuition costs for state-college students with household incomes of $125,000 or less. The proposal would impose other requirements, including that students would have to live and work in Florida for periods of time after finishing their studies or leaving college. Also, the funding would apply only to tuition, not other costs associated with college. The bill is filed for the 2018 legislative session, which starts in January.

Shevrin Jones needs to stay out of the taxpayers wallets! These kids will never learn to pay as they go. I did it, and I didn’t die. The world doesn’t owe these students a dime.

    Total sham.
My wife and I work hard. We pay tuition, because we make more than the X amount for a “subsidy”. I am totally against free tuition from tax dollars to pay for someone else’s kids to go for free. What the heck are we working hard for? We sacrifice so much for our kids to get ahead and do better than us.
If everyone made less than X amount, then everyone’s kids would go for free. And there’s not enough tax money in the country to pay for that. Total pipe dream.
If you want to go to college, pay for it, either your parent(s), or get a loan.
Or get a job and contribute.
    And to pencil:
    get real.
Your “opportunity” is equal to others paying for someone else’s kid to go to college, plain and simple.
I can almost sympathize with you(not really).
But you are talking about real money, taking my kids “opportunity” that has been hard earned and giving it to someone else. No way.

What a crock. I make $130k a year and my nieghbor makes $110k a year. His kid is free and mine pays. No wonder its easier not to excell and get all the freebies. NO NO NO

    NO! NO! NO!.
I should NOT have to pay for anyone’s education except my own children’s.
Just get a job and pay your own way!!
NO FREE HANDOUTS…..IT LEADS TO SLAVERY…

Sounds like a great idea. Very few get the opportunity to get into college . . . there is a process that involves reading, math and critical thinking so not too many of you keyboard scholars would get in if you tried.

Nevertheless, there are poor families in our area though with very bright children who given the opportunity will become professionals and make significant contributions to the future of Northwest Florida.

Other People’s Money = Tax Dollars that we all contribute to and education is its own investment. Good example: Great jobs coming to Century and not enough even with GED’s to fill them.

    No!, Just plain no!
    For many reasons.
If you don’t know the reasons, then you are the problem.

College isn’t for everyone. A good trade school would be a much better idea for a lot of students. Also, will students be eligible for a scholarship regardless of their grades, attendance, etc.? How does the ’state’ have the money to pay for any scholarships? Good students already have access to many scholarships – I’m against the state funding any at all.

The average household income in Florida is $46,021. It looks like almost everyone would get free tuition.

This is an example of the liberal mindset and actions spending other people’s money.
Calvin Coolidge stated it best…”There is no such thing as a free lunch!”
