The Mystery Of North Escambia’s Only Highway Rest Area
August 4, 2017
When readers reach out to NorthEscambia.com with questions involving public facilities, our roads, our bridges, and mysteriously appearing toilets…we sometimes respond.
Today we’re exploring the mystery of North Escambia’s only roadside “rest area”. The rest area is located along Pine Barren Road, about 1.5 miles north of Bogia Road. It’s located comfortably just off the highway, and has “Made in America” facilities for him and her.
Update: Since our photo was taken Thursday afternoon, we’re told that the facilities have been expanded to include three toilets (a family toilet, perhaps?).
Area residents say this is version three of the rest area…the third time someone has placed toilets at the remote location. The first two versions also included three toilets before they were removed.
If you are looking for these facilities, here are the GPS coordinates: 30.85900, -87.36897. The area is expected to be filled to capacity for the August 21 eclipse.

I think it is a bus stop, also, but they had only commodes, no bench.
First response — Is that a MOONING joke?
Second thought – Flash back to the scene on the front lawn in the movie The Help.
REGARDING:
“Like the movies said, “ya gotta go. ya gotta go”, no big deal. Only Americans make it one.”
I always enjoy the “only Americans” remarks. They are usually false to begin with but they also imply that we have to be like everyone else or we are wrong. This is definitely false.
David for exceptionalism
Just smile and wave as people pass by in the cars. Good stuff. Can’t make this kinda of stuff up !
This article is the new low of all…….just kidding! All I want is stories that are true, or true to the best of the journalists knowledge. This story made me smile, thinking about the crazy stuff some do to get attention like planting toilets on the roadside! Thanks for reporting it, we need these kinds of stories to ‘lighten” us up a bit. If the story doesn’t interest you, don’t read it and move on I say. Thanks William!
@Mixster, yes there once was a rest area, between Dogwood Park and Walnut Hill.
Individuals of a certain group began to use the area for an entertainment spot, this led to it being closed. Just like the facilities at the old bay bridge fishing pier had to be boarded up and porta-potties brought into use.
I hope that they will not use this new facility, something tells me that they will not likely do so.
Is this what constitutes an illegal dump?
Someone doesn’t know what a message center is. Flush once for local government issues.
flush twice for State issues and flush thrice for Federal issues.
There used to be a rest area on hwy. 97 on the left hand side going if going south
In reality there absolutely needs to be a FDOT Welcome Station on the right side of the Road coming into Century. Travelers stop at the Welcome to Florida sign continually and there are no bath room facilities nor place to walk a dog. some beautiful landscaping would add to the touch.
Instead of old shacks and ugly retention pond, the leaders in Century could petition the FDOT and WFRPC and get it in the works.
It would add to the esthetics of the town and benefit the entire county.
This should have been put in the five year plan.
there are three now
this is great there is a nature trail near by
This is a great idea except it needs a beach umbrella over each. Like the movies said, “ya gotta go. ya gotta go”, no big deal. Only Americans make it one.
At last a news story that was fun to read! Thanks, William.
I do have to say there are limited public facilities on Hwy 29 north of Molino. I am familiar with Welcome Stations but this area needs a Hope you had a fun time in our State Station.
Kuddos to the citizens providing these facilities in a comfortably private area. Keep up the good work.
How about adding a privacy curtain, a sink and a small book shelf for reading materials.
Just proves that the north end of the county has civilized rest stops for travelers, and it is wheelchair accessible. Open for visitors 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and does not require funding to operate.
I used one of them and to tell you the truth e everyone that
drove by was so friendly. The only drawback was when I tried to flush. It not work so good.
Need to be handicap accessible
Today there are three seats available! LOL
LOL. Willis, there is a ditch close by with lots of running rain water. That should suffice!
That’s right Bob could even reflect the attitude of so many of the Countys citizens.
But I do normally like to wash my hands after using such facilities.
Symbolic of so many things in Escambia County that it is impossible to isolate this to one individual or group of our leadership.
Could it be this is finally the crack down on wasteful actions of “our” politicians?
Maybe a portal to understanding the sheriff’s need for billboards all over the county?
Appreciations expressed to whomever has provided us with a bit of good old fashioned humor in a world that often seems “Offended” by the slightest little toot.
Hey, Y’all lookit this…. FUNNY
