Escambia Man Gets 20 Years For Arson

August 19, 2017

An Escambia County man was sentenced to two decades in state prison on arson and criminal mischief charges.

Nathan Stafford was sentenced as a habitual felony offender by Circuit Judge Thomas Dannheisser to 20 years in state prison after he entered a plea of no contest. The 20 year sentence will run consecutively with a five year sentence Stafford previously received for a violation of probation conviction.

On May 30, 2016, Stafford consumed several medications, spread gasoline through his apartment and set it on fire in an attempt to take his own life. Prior to the medication taking effect, Stafford left the apartment. The fire caused anĀ  estimated $20,000 in damages to the apartment. When contacted by law enforcement, Stafford admitted to setting the fire.

Amber, he will be sent to Lake Butler, regional medical center. All inmates go there to get medical evaluation. Then he will be placed in facility. It will take weeks before you know where he is assigned. Good luck

Amber, you tell them Dad is sick with an illness called Depression. With this sickness you are not yourself and not in your right mind. He did these things and tried to hurt himself while out of his right mind. He loves them and he wants to get better but has to be punished for the things he did that were wrong. He will be away for a long, long time. But they can write him, send him pictures and pray for him. You must try to forgive him. You can do this only through Christ’s strength, not yours. He will set your feet on the solid rock and make your path straight.

    RE: Amber
I meant no disrespect, by the way. I am very sorry for his children… this is now way to see your father…

I’m not sure of his previous record, but hopefully he gets the help he needs. Suicide isn’t a joke, and if this man was willing to burn himself alive the he needs serious help. Maybe sticking him in prison wasn’t the answer, however, with a lack of prior knowledge to his previous crimes he may have been sent exactly where he needed to be. Hopefully he gets the help he needs there.
