Driver Caught On Camera Passing School Bus On Shoulder

August 17, 2017

A Cantonment driver was caught on camera passing a loading school bus on the grassy shoulder of the road.

The incident happened about 7:00 Tuesday morning on Chemstrand Road just south of Kingsfield Road. In the top photo, a student can been seen boarding the school bus as the Honda Pilot approached the bus.

The photos were submitted by a reader to NorthEscambia.com. The photos have also been provided to the Escambia County School District and the Florida Highway Patrol. Officials believe they should be able to easily find the vehicle using the tag number, which is reasonably clear in the original photos.

Failing to stop for a school bus that is loading or unloading is a $271 ticket in Escambia County. But if charged, the Honda Pilot driver that passed on the grassy shoulder may not get off so easy.

“Passing a school bus on the shoulder is a mandatory court appearance,” Lt. Eddie Elmore of the Florida Highway Patrol said. “They will have to go stand in front of a judge.”

Pictured below:  A series of photos shows the progression of the Honda Pilot and that the flashing stop lights on the bus were active. Reader photos for  NorthEscambia.com, click to enlarge.

Looks like 321 PEI on the plate?
    Maybe 32I PE1?

Any who they are going to get it good!
I drive this road everyday and see the same crap all the time.

It DOES NOT matter who flags you on. Common sense says there is no where you need to be, more important than a childs safety. TOO many children are hurt or killed because someone, sometimes even a parent, thinks only of what they want is more important than a child. Like the saying goes…..YOU CAN’T FIX STUPID!!

“”"”his bus driver would always tell me to go ahead so that I wouldn’t have to wait for the long line of traffic. Once I pulled out in front of her, she would turn the flashing lights off and pull the stop sign in.”"”

That is still illegally passing a bus on the right in the state of Florida. Same difference. The bus driver can’t wave you on legaly

I hope the Sheriff’s Dept. enlarged the tag and went after this person…….

    Tondra……..You can’t fit STUPID

@Inquiry – That’s a good question. It’s definitely a possibility. When I used to take my son to the bus stop, his bus driver would always tell me to go ahead so that I wouldn’t have to wait for the long line of traffic. Once I pulled out in front of her, she would turn the flashing lights off and pull the stop sign in.

I live on Muscogee rd and can tell you this happens way more than people realize and the county commissioners should be ashamed, the other parents and I have called and complained , we have requested to have a bus stop sign put up but have gotten no response. The scariest thing about it in our area is the particular highway we live on has a lot of logging trucks traveling up and down the road that don’t care about the posted speed limit (but I have to admit the cars seem to care even less). What is so hard about doing the speed limit how selfish are these people is it worth running over a child just so you can get to you destination 2 minutes faster SLOW DOWN HAVE SOME RESPECT

The driver should have to do at least one week in jail along with maximum fines. If he or she would have hit my grandchildren it would have been the last thing dod.

They need to be charged with child endanger! People need to learn there are consequences to ones actions!

You should see how drivers act in school parking lots. It’s crazy and yes , people don’t think the rules apply to them. I sit in the line in the morning and afternoons. Just Now a car just sped by me and did two fast trips through parking lot and left. It’s just crazy.

  12. Melissa on August 17th, 2017 12:59 pm

Maybe they were waiting on the bus and dropped the child off and then once the child was on the bus, they drove ahead of the bus. Should have waited for it to pass then merge into coming traffic. Either way, no matter what the situation, there’s NO reason to be in a movie g car while a bus has it’s boarding signs out.

  13. Willy on August 17th, 2017 11:08 am

That’s not the first time I’ve seen that on Chemstrand OR Kingsfield. That bus might cost you five minutes of travel time…….is it THAT important to get there first? That fine seems small. Double the fine and a 6-month suspension for the first offense.

  14. Legend on August 17th, 2017 10:26 am

Yes Willis. If you put a childs life in danger while driving like an idiot you do not need a drivers licenses or a car.

  15. Pat hunter on August 17th, 2017 10:13 am

I hope they publicize their identity
    I’ll be following story

  16. Inquiry on August 17th, 2017 9:39 am

This is crazy….this is why my children has never road the bus and my oldest a junior. Because crazy people not the bis driver… I do have a question though. Where is the child coming from. There isn’t any houses in this particular spot just 2 driveway/dirt roads. Did that car drop the child off?

  17. WVgal on August 17th, 2017 9:14 am

We have people speeding and passing cars in the middle of a school zone in the mornings where I live, and there is a cross walk in there too that kids use, it’s very scary!

  18. rick on August 17th, 2017 8:58 am

    Legend
    Taking away their license is a great idea……… but I think that the car needs to impounded, not put in pounds. Pounds are for dogs. :}

  19. Nim on August 17th, 2017 8:56 am

Hope there’s a followup to this. Thankful for the quick-witted photographer!

  20. Eddie on August 17th, 2017 8:52 am

Emergency vehicles even stop for school buses until bus drivers give the okay to proceed.

  21. paul on August 17th, 2017 8:30 am

I hope they get a heavy penalty. You can’t put a price on a life but they should feel the pain of their arrogance for a long time. 5yrs with no DL would be a start..

  22. lmn on August 17th, 2017 8:19 am

This driver should be punished and have his/her drivers license suspended. A fine and then have to take the city bus and see how they feel about that while they are boarding and someone passes on the grass while they are boarding.

  23. Scott on August 17th, 2017 8:03 am

Is that driver the one that killed the pit bull yesterday right there?

  24. Mississippian on August 17th, 2017 7:43 am

Personally I think states should look at Mississippi ’s Nathan’s Law about passing a stopped school bus! Granted it took a family losing their 5 year old son in their driveway as he was getting off the bus for Mississippi Legislators to do something but let me tell you people stop for school buses a LOT more than they use to! Of course it took a couple people being prosecuted!!!

  25. Tara Allsopp on August 17th, 2017 7:21 am

The rules only apply to some people. Didn’t y’all know that? Geesh! Smh On a serious note, I hope the driver is ashamed of him/herself from this being published and realizes just how lucky he/ she is a child was not hurt. Hopefully the judge will not go easy on him/ her so it doesn’t happen again.

  26. Tondra on August 17th, 2017 7:07 am

Smh people pass me all the time they need to fix stupid

  27. James sasse on August 17th, 2017 6:24 am

There is no excuse for this, if your in a hurry leave earlier in the morning, our children need protection from bad people like this, if you’ll pass a bus that’s loading kids on the door side ,what else are you capable of?

  28. veronica nowling on August 17th, 2017 6:21 am

What an impatient idiot putting the risk there to danger a child. Everyone should know better!!!

  29. john on August 17th, 2017 6:17 am

This is most likely a vehicle dash cam footage, otherwise the driver was already holding their phone, but I don’t think you could be fast enough to get the pic. I am looking into installing on my vehicles. Many folks simply don’t give themselves sufficient time to get to work, so they put everyone else at risk.

  30. anne 1of2 on August 17th, 2017 5:46 am

Too many drivers believe they are entitled to do whatever they feel like because they are so “portant” and the rest of us can follow the rules. I’m glad at least one will be caught. Doesn’t the bus have a camera too? If not, that’s where the next pile of cash needs to be spent.

  31. Honest John on August 17th, 2017 5:37 am

Nothing surprises me anymore when it comes to driving and not obeying traffic laws.

  32. Willis on August 17th, 2017 5:18 am

    Take license and car.
Then again we have become mostly oblivious to the stupidity and ignorance as long as it doesn’t affect us personally.

  33. Legend on August 17th, 2017 3:00 am

I hope the judge takes there drivers licenses and in pounds there car.

  34. Suzie B on August 17th, 2017 2:22 am

My mid price dash cam is running all the time now. I’m fed up with stupidity of some people. I had a man literally walk out in front of me from between two cars. He was looking the other way. Fortunately I got stopped but I bought my camera after that. Good night vision on it is important. I’m so glad this person turned the photos in.

  35. Grand Locust on August 17th, 2017 1:05 am

The driver of the vehicle will not be applying for mensa membership anytime soon. Idiotic. Thank you to the motorist who took the time to photograph the infraction. As we keep falling further and further down the rabbit hole as a civilization where law and rules are ignored, it is important that good people become involved and shine light on stupid.
