Six People Injured In Highway 29, Highway 97 Crash In Molino

July 8, 2017

Six people, including three juveniles, were injured in a two vehicle crash Saturday afternoon in Molino.

The crash occurred just after noon at the intersection of Highway 29 and Highway 97.

The Florida Highway Patrol said 78-year old Edna Taylor of Molino was in a Lincoln MKZ northbound on Highway 29 in the left turn lane to Highway 97 when she turned directly into the path of a southbound Toyota Prius driven by 22-year old Brittany Neighbors of Queen Creek, AZ.

The MKZ came to rest in the intersection; the Prius crashed into a deep concrete culvert in front of a Tom Thumb store.

Taylor was transported to West Florida Hospital with minor injuries. Neighbors, and her passengers — 50-year old Jeane Hux of Pleasant View, TN, and children ages 6, 10 and 11 — were transported to Sacred Heart Hospital with minor injuries.

Taylor was cited by the FHP for violation of right of way when making a left turn.

The Molino and Cantonment stations of Escambia Fire Rescue and the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office also responded to the crash.

This is a bad intersection. the main cause of congestion here is the store. Turning onto 97 and then onto Crabtree Church road to get to the store creates a pile up , especially for people wanting to travel NW on 97. Crabtree Church Road intersects with 97 too close to the 29 – 97 intersection. Seems to me the easiest fix would be to move the intersection of Crabtree Church Road and 97, and add a turning lane for the store access. Of course this accident wasn’t due to any of the above. This accident was clearly cause by someone not yielding the right of way. Maybe a left turn on arrow only is what’s needed here, especially with the speed limit along the stretch of highway.

Hope Edna is ok. I know the family and this is sad.

DOT begin plans to build an overpass for HWY 29 at that intersection. Then with the left turn to 97 going UNDER 29 all this will be avoided. :)

I was hit by a 74-year-old lady in 1995′ish at Glover Ln and Hwy 90 with this scenario. She knew she had a green light but she got confused about who had the right of way when she was turning left onto Glover Ln. Fortunately, there was no one in the outside lane next to me so I was able to avoid a major impact and she just clipped the rear corner of my truck so neither of us was injured.
I give credit to the AMA Motorcycle safety courses I had taken in previous years. If you want to learn how to drive defensively, take a motorcycle safety course.
If you or someone you know is elderly and drives, there are refresher driving courses available for seniors to sharpen their skills and I’m pretty sure insurance companies offer discounts for having completed the course.

Chris, I don’t know about old, but yes I think you are confused and probably should NOT be driving. Yes, I-110 does run North and South so does Highway 29. And yes, I-10 does intersect with I-65 IN MOBILE, ALABAMA some 60 odd miles away from Highway 29.

Escambia County Florida and Alabama DOT need to get together and solve this repeated issue of traffic flow on Highway 29 North and South Bound minor or serious or deadly traffic wrecks ruin peoples plans.
The travelers from out of town-how do you think they continue with their trip…As a former fire fighter (16 years) in Alabama I saw a lot of people stranded. Not only are their trips changed their lives are changed because someone will not spend the money to correct a problems.
And people will not stop texting, drinking and all of the things that cause wrecks, they are not accidents they are wrecks call it what it is. It’s not just poor highway planning it’s all of us too.
DRIVE CAREFULLY AND ALWAYS BE AWARE OF THE OTHER VEHICLES.

Maybe I am old and confused, but doesn’t I-110 pretty much run North/South? How would one extend it to I-65? And doesn’t I-10 run into/intersect I-65?

  7. Mike on July 9th, 2017 3:50 pm

The problem is, if the commissioners had voted to extend I-110 to I-65 some 18 yrs ago we wouldn’t have as many accidents on 29.

    >>No mention of the young Prius driver from AZ ??? No injuries? What?

    The article states:

Neighbors, and her passengers — 50-year old Jeane Hux of Pleasant View, TN, and children ages 6, 10 and 11 — were transported to Sacred Heart Hospital with minor injuries.

    REGARDING:
“Do you have a free left turn on green from 29 to 97 . . .or do you HAVE TO WAIT for green turn arrow?”

If vehicles were in the left turning lanes long enough before the light changed, there will be a green arrow first, followed after a time with simply green for those who go when traffic allows.

If traffic is too heavy to make the turn and nobody is coming from 97, the light will change back directly to a green arrow.

Even if you have a green arrow, if other cars are not yielding the right of way, it is only reasonable to keep waiting until it is clear to turn — safer and cheaper than intentionally hitting them.

Are any accidents really accidents if they can be prevented ?

  12. William on July 9th, 2017 6:40 am

    >>William can quote records all he wants,, but given anyone day there is up to 100 traffic a day there

William said there are far fewer serious injury accidents since the light was installed….people being seriously hurt or killed (none). Nothing about traffic offenses.

Note that the accident in this story was not a serious injury accident…all injuries were minor.

  13. bama on July 9th, 2017 5:37 am

this red light was and is a waste of money ,, I wish someone would go sit at it one day and just count the traffic violations,, Lack of a red light there was not the problem ,, Lack of knowing how to drive is the ONLY problem, William can quote records all he wants,, but given anyone day there is up to 100 traffic a day there,, I know because approaching it once I say 3 illegal rolling stops and 2 u turns into coming traffic

  14. Elizabeth on July 8th, 2017 9:45 pm

Also, when coming from Pensacola and making a u-turn at the redlight to turn into the front of the tomthunb, people turning right off 97 going to Pensacola do not pay attention to those turning into the front of the Tom Thumb, therefore almost causing an accident. So, shouldn’t they have a “no right turn on red”? Or maybe even a no uturn at that intersection?

  15. JustSaying on July 8th, 2017 9:09 pm

    William,
Thank you for your reporting and going to these accidents to keep us informed and to be more cautious ! And just living in the area and paying attention, there have been a lot less accidents since the light has been installed! Common sense!

  16. Alan on July 8th, 2017 8:16 pm

People can blame whatever they want but it still comes down to people not paying attention when they are driving. More recks happen now than they did years ago because of people being more distracted.

  17. Gary on July 8th, 2017 8:14 pm

    Careless driver.

  18. CW on July 8th, 2017 7:07 pm

“People northbound are making u-turns to get into the Tom Thumb”

^ Either this, or they’ll shoot across southbound 29 onto 97 and then slam on brakes to turn into the gas station. I nearly rear ended someone doing this once.

  19. William on July 8th, 2017 5:56 pm

    >>>William, do you have any data to back that up or did you just fabricate that response?

First hand knowledge. Before the light, I stood in that intersection all times of the day and night multiple times per week…once as many as 3-4 times in one weekend…taking photos of serious injury crashes.

Since the light, there have only been a handful of injury wrecks, none even that terribly serious.

  20. CW on July 8th, 2017 5:41 pm

The whole ‘yield on green’ left turn needs to be eliminated. Left turns should only be when the green arrow is lit. Southbound traffic is moving too fast to make it across to 97, especially when people are stopping in front of you to turn into the Tom Thumb.

  21. Marvin on July 8th, 2017 5:23 pm

The light sure seem like a good idea at the time. But the redesign of the intersection sure was poorly designed. Probably would’ve been a good idea if they asked the locals about the traffic flow. The Crabtree Church Rd., Highway 97 and Tom Thumb entrance can be a real pain, Between ball park traffic, Molino school traffic, hey let’s go to Atmore casino traffic and Tom Thumb traffic. Can make for a real dangerous intersection

  22. lmn on July 8th, 2017 4:44 pm

This intersection is still so messed up. Whoever the engineer was did not do a great job. People northbound are making u-turns to get into the tom thumb. No turn lane to get into the tom thumb on 97. Just a pitiful design.

  23. BentStraight on July 8th, 2017 4:01 pm

  24. GMH on July 8th, 2017 3:48 pm

I agree with William. Seems like there was a wreck here almost every day before the light. Now it seems more like 1 a month.

  25. Phillip on July 8th, 2017 3:28 pm

William, do you have any data to back that up or did you just fabricate that response?

  26. BK on July 8th, 2017 3:05 pm

Probably same as any other red light. It happens.

  27. Rodney on July 8th, 2017 2:21 pm

    Good question Frank.

  28. William on July 8th, 2017 2:18 pm

    >>>I would be curios to know has the amount of wrecks changed any since the red-light was installed?

There has been a dramatic decrease in the number of injury/serious accidents since the light was installed.
