Fourth Of July Wreck Claims Life Of Atmore Man

July 5, 2017

A single vehicle crash claimed the life of an Atmore man Tuesday afternoon.

Robert Glenn Thrower, 55, was killed when the 19996 Chevrolet Blazer he was driving ran off the road, struck an embankment and overturned, according to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.

Thrower, who was not wearing a seat belt,  was ejected from the SUV and pronounced dead at the scene. The crash happened about 2 p.m. on Highway 29  at the 22.80 mile marker in the Dixie Community, east of Brewton.

Thrower was the tribal historic preservation officer  for the Poarch Band of Creek Indians.

For a time Robert was my closest friend, we traveled together and worked together and created together. He had an urgency for life. He loved his girls Rachael, Cheryl and Sehoy and his tribal heritage. Robert and I had ongoing dialogue about existence, kindness and spiritual mysticism. He believed that our ancestors could communicate with us and, in fact, were communicating with and somehow watching over us. If he were still physically here, he would probably say, “look for me in your dreams, listen to the messages of the earth that is how I will contact you”. In a facebook post he wrote: “I often think our bodies are simply Animated clay on the earth, yet we are so much more in spirit.” And so it is.

My wife asked Robert to minister our marriage 13 years ago. He repeated the entire ceremony in the Creek language. It made a very special day even better to us. Definitely a one of a kind person. He will be missed.

I am terribly saddened to learn of Robert’s loss. He was an avid student and enthusiastic teacher of Native American and especially Creek history and culture, and he was beloved to all who knew him. I extend my most sincere condolences to his family.

Roberts knowledge of Creek arts and community ways and pride in his ancestral spiritual heritage was quite striking. I’ll miss his stories and sense of humor at USET.

Robert was probably the best Indian aid that’s ever been at Huxford elementary. Robert love helping the tribal kids accomplish their goals in life. He was always willing to go that extra mile to help in any kind of way possible with his students. Robert can never be replaced for his knowledge, of the Poarch Creek Indians. RIP my friend

Mr. Robert was a huge part of my life growing up, a second father really. I’ve never known a more kind of gentle person. Unwaveringly devoted to keeping our history and heritage alive, he was a treasure to all who knew him. This world will be a little bit dimmer without his shinning light in it. My deepest sympathies to his girls, miss and love each of you.

What a brilliant mind and compassionate person! Robert was one of a kind and was willing to help anyone learn and understand the facts on many subjects. A person would have to have known him to understand the extent of what everyone is commenting about a very good person!

Robert, you are a bright light. Historic preservation, and the world, will miss your kindness, wisdom, and sincerity. I feel lucky our paths have crossed even for this short year, and am so sorry for the loss– especially to your family and daughter, the Poarch Band community, the tribal historic preservation family, and to all who knew you.

I worked with Robert at Huxford Elementary School over 25 years ago and he was very compassionate about his heritage and he loved his family. May your soul rest in peace, but may your memories forever live in the hearts of your loved ones.

We both enjoyed working with Robert at Huxford Elementary many years ago and he was always helping our children with reports. He was such a quiet, knowledgeable and good person. God Bless and be with his family.

Glenn I am so sorry for your loss. As I told you at our class reunion, I met your son a few years ago and I was very impressed. He was a great speaker and very knowledgeable about the history of the Creek Nation. My prayers for you and your family

I had the distinct pleasure of meeting Robert for the first time several years ago while attending my first United South and Eastern Tribes conference in Connecticut. In the years since that first meeting I have had several other occasions to talk with him and each time I have come away a better person. My most sincere condolences to his family and friends, you are all in my thoughts.

Robert was a patient, loyal, decent person. I sat on the Culture and Heritage Committee with him at USET. He was a leader and friend to us all. He instilled great respect for the Poarch Creek in all of us, and for Native people’s everywhere. A great man. A great friend. And a great loss.

I am so sorry to hear this news. I’ve known Robert my whole life. He was a very special person to me and my family. I didn’t see him that often as an adult but when we’d see each other, we’d always have a conversation about life, tribal history, art or whatever it was, it was inspiring to talk about. He was so knowledgeable and so passionate. He was one of a kind. It was fascinating to talk to him. I have missed his mother since she passed and I will sorely miss him, too. Prayers for his family. Robert, you will be truly missed.
