Inmate Executed At Atmore’s Holman Prison

June 9, 2017

Thursday night at 9:54, the State of Alabama carried out the execution of Robert Bryant Melson, 46, by lethal injection at the William C. Correctional Facility in Atmore.  Melson did not give a last statement and was pronounced dead at 10:27 p.m.

Melson was sentenced to death for the 1994 capital murder of 17-year-old Nathaniel Baker, 18-year old Tamika Collins, and 23-year-old Darrell Collier during an armed robbery of a restaurant in Etowah County.

At a press conference following the execution, Commissioner Jeff Dunn read a prepared statement from the Collins family.

“We are grateful to God for sustaining us to endure these years of suffering, heartaches, and missing our loved one, but we survived by hard work, prayer and togetherness,” the Collins family wrote in the statement.

Dunn said the execution was carried out according to protocol without complication.

Don’t understand why we had to support this criminal for so many years. I lived in Gadsden at the time this happened. Remember this all too well. Tamika was my granddaughter’s cousin. My granddaughter was named after Tamika because of the love and respect they had for this sweet, young lady, that lost her life so young.
This man cut short the lives of 3 young people. They, the families, should have had justice sooner than now.

In my humble opinion, 99% of the lawyers in these matters give all of the rest of them, a bad name.

23 years it took to bring justice for the murder of 3 people, that is a shame there is no excuse for him to have 23 years of life when he denied 3 people of life.

Is it the system or those running the system?

It took 23 years because a very vocal group is always against the death penalty..
A pure surprise that it happened at all

If weren’t for the appeal process this country could reduce the number of lawyers and judges by half. All of which are funded by the tax paying Contributing Deplorables. Now, we wouldn’t want to see that happen, would we?

Area Resident – the 23 years probably resulted from years and years of appeals. I agree there is something terribly wrong with our justice system!

Why did it take 23 years? His victims were just kids with their whole lives ahead of them. Something is terribly wrong with our justice system.
