Highway 29 In Century Apparently Damaged By Heavy Rains
June 25, 2017
Heavy rain last week apparently caused damage to Highway 29 in Century, just south of Hudson Hill Road.
Neighbors said the road cracked on Saturday, with the cracks spreading quickly. The pavement was flexing the under passing vehicles, pushing water out of the cracks, neighbors said.
Mayor Henry Hawkins said the Town of Century has contacted the Florida Department of Transportation about the situation. Hawkins said the problem was not caused by a potable water leak.

Money! That’s the exact reason why!!! HWY 29 check point was a joke. Waste of time and our tax dollars. Wish they’d publish the out come of their “dui success” Saturday night. Just my thoughts and opinion.
it’s on the north end of the county. they’ll put up a sign on the side of the road marking the spot. or a bullseye on the pavement. the spot in the highway where the trucks turn over has been there for many years. has it been fixed?
How is it that the DOT, the FHP,and the Sheriff’s Dept can deploy message signs, barricades, and other traffic control devices, plus 35 law enforcement officers to Checkpoint Charlie on Friday night on US29 , and they can not devote some of the same resources to actually protect the public and prevent accidents on the same road Sunday? This is a disgrace, and should be an embarrassment to State and Local Governments with this road being the major entry point into the state for tourists headed to the beach.
William; this situation has gotten much worse since yesterday. The pavement is now broken off, and the damage has spread all the way to the median, and car and truck traffic are still driving over it. This is a matter of a potentially very dangerous situation if these lanes are not blocked off. I took the time yesterday to notify; the town of century, the FHP, the DOT, and none of them seemed even a little interested in interrupting their weekend to do anything to protect public safety. Maybe your publication would carry a little more weight with some of the bureaucrats.
