Woman Attacked, Robbed Leaving Cantonment Subway Restaurant

April 4, 2017

A woman was assaulted and robbed Sunday night after she left a Highway 29 restaurant.

The victim told the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office that she was attacked about 9 p.m. as she walked out of the Subway, next to Winn Dixie on Highway 29 at Old Chemstrand Road. The attacker took her purse and later used the debit cards inside to wipe out her bank balance. He also got away with keys and cash.

The woman was not injured.

The suspect was described as being a slender black male about 6-feet tall, wearing all black and a gray face mask. Witnesses reported that he jumped into the passenger side of an older electric blue Dodge or similar truck with shiny chrome rims. The truck fled the area northbound on Highway 95A.

The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone that witnessed the incident or that has possible information on the suspect or truck to call them at (850) 436-9620 or Crime Stoppers at (850) 433-STOP. Callers to Crime Stoppers do not have to provide their name and may be eligible for a cash reward.

I work for one of the worlds largest credit unions. Here is a bit of advice: if someone steals your debit/credit cards (or even if you lose them) call the financial institution so they can shut down the accounts. Also I see far too many people who (so they say) write their PIN number on a something and put it in their wallet or purse. That’s usually a sign of fraudulent activity, because most people are not that dumb, but just in case… DONT DO IT!!!

Carry cash in your pocket and your keys on a lanyard. Leave your phone in the car locked. Park at the front door at this Subway after dark. Who cares if you block the driveway. My wife does it all the time. If the police arrive, tell them you are afraid of being robbed or carjacked. You most likely won’t be a victim of robbery

Best thing to do is call your order in from your car in the parking lot. Then move your car and go in for a few minutes while parked at the door.

I’m a female that now thinks different than the way I was raised. Life was simple when I was a child. I’m not old by no means but each day has become more and more difficult. Too many uncontrollable drug infested human beings walking around. With all the money us working tax payers pay you would think there would be a person, place or thing to get control of crime by teaching folks about self disciplined behavior. The law is not working. The law puts them in jail if caught so the jails just keep getting more and more criminals added. With very slim success stories. I wish I had some answers because we were not put here to be fearful.

God Bless America and a special blessing to all of you reading this. Amen

“Who steals my purse is given lead.”

(actually, the first is more likely, but it is MY trash)

Ladies….never put your gun in your purse because thats the first thing the robbers will grab. If you have Licensed to carry…tuck it in your pants.

  7. Armed CWP momma on April 4th, 2017 4:28 pm

This is why I made the decision to get my CWP and conceal carry “cocked & locked”. I refuse to be a victim & will protect my kids with my own life if necessary! I pray I never am in that situation. So sorry this woman had to experience that scary event. If you rush at me, I will be in fear for my life & stand my ground.

Grateful this woman was not harmed.

    All for concealed carry weapon.

Have your keys in hand as you enter and exit your home or business..

Your ignition key is a weapon and your remote has an alarm. Works well by your bedside also ,along with your guns.

Carry Mace with Velcro strap( purchased this way) around your hand.

Observe your surroundings at all times.

We have the right to protect our families, ourselves, and others.

Stand you ground guarantees your right to defend your life or others, not your property.

I agree that swift justice would make the parasites think twice but going Dirty Harry on them means you’ll be in prison too and they’ll get out before you!

It sure seems like the crime in Cantonment is increasing at a rapid pace lately.

I wish I would’ve been a witness to it because I would’ve gotten all the way involved. It’s my duty as a member of the community, as a man, and as a decent human being. I’ve been in the position three times before and all three times he never got away. One time a guy had a knife but thankfully he didn’t get a chance to use it. Hope the woman is ok and stays safe from now on.
Ladies, please be aware of your surroundings.

Just remember.. Shoot’em while they’re comin at you.. Not when they’re leaving..

I long ago stopped using or carrying debit cards. I had someone at a restaurant steal the numbers from my card one time, and they bought thousands of dollars of merchandise with it… and it’s a LONG process getting that money back.

Now I use a credit card everywhere I go, and I just pay the balance off every month. It’s much safer since you can easily dispute any fraudulent charges and not risk the money in your bank account.

Getting about sick of hearing this. Concealed carry, put some of these punks down, make them scared to mess with our women!

  15. anne 1of2 on April 4th, 2017 9:14 am

I never carry a purse anymore. These 2-footed ratsa re much more likely to grab a purse, than to frisk a body! We have to be smarter than they are. If she saw him she had time to press the button on the shrill sirens which are hand-held and even the dog runs from that. God bless this woman, her Guardian Angel was right where she needed to be.

How so, TJ?if someone is coming for me, er my purse, I have no way of knowing he is only after my purse. I am not going to assume he just wants my purse. I assume he wants to hurt me or my kid…. I am in fear for my life!

  17. Richard Murray on April 4th, 2017 9:11 am

“Shooting someone for stealing your purse will probably land you in jail for a long time”. I’m thinking this is the perfect opportunity to test your weapon. If you can’t protect yourself from a robbery than why carry?

  18. sam on April 4th, 2017 8:53 am

@Tj, to get the permit i thought you had to have training. i am former military so i got a pass. also we have stand your ground. i don’t think you would be convicted for defending yourself.

  19. Linda Hester on April 4th, 2017 8:51 am

I agree that if you shot a purse thief you would probably go to jail. And, in this case, I would imagine, as someone said, you’d have had to have the gun drawn. I wonder if the truck pulled up and she waited to see if it was going to let her cross. That would give a second of distraction.

However, if you shot the truck, they might think twice about doing it again. It would be fantastic if you could just blow scum like this away. He’s a drain on society, I would bet he’s been incarcerated at least 10 times, being as how he had the sense to wear a mask, have a partner and a getaway. This was well planned, and it didn’t go this well at first.

    >>the only thing I see wrong here is ANY debit card I try to use to get money I have a pass word to use,,

Story does not say he got money…says he wiped out the account. Don’t know, but speculating…perhaps he used the debit card as credit for a shopping spree until the cards was declined since the account was emptied. No PIN required.

  22. CW on April 4th, 2017 7:53 am

    @Sam

I doubt concealed carry would have helped in this situation. She never would have had time to get it out of her purse.

Every time this happens it always a helpless person that can’t defend themselves I’m sorry this happened to you NOW WHAT I WOULD LIKE TO HAPPEN IS WHOEVER THIS THIEF IS I WOULD LOVE TO RUN INTO YOU ONE CHANCE ONE BULLET ONE TIME PROBLEM SOLVED !!!!

  25. Molino Girl on April 4th, 2017 6:45 am

I agree Sam, but in this case Concealed carry probably wouldn’t have done her much good. According to her Facebook post -
“I saw this young man as I looked left and then right to cross the street & within seconds he was on me..SECONDS with no time for me to react.” That she didn’t have time to react properly probably kept other innocent people from getting caught in the crossfire of a weapon being used. She also said there were plenty of people in the parking lot who were witnesses and the area was brightly lit which shows the scum of society is getting braver. It’s gotten to the point that you can’t go places alone or in the evenings anymore…to the point where you practically have to walk around with a knife or gun already in your hand. I will be prepared anytime I have to be out, and I will be waiting, and watching. What happened to her be first in my mind, especially now. So tired of the scum taking over.

  26. mike on April 4th, 2017 6:27 am

I agree with Sam. There’s one thing criminals like these should keep in mind: a piece of lead. We need to end this type of thing, before the streets are like Sweden’s, with crimes against women running rampant.

Vigilantism & street justice are unacceptable, until people can’t go about their daily business without fearing for their lives. Just how much worse things have to get who is to say? :(

“Concealed carry. Get your permit. Protect yourself.”

But do not carry in your purse unless you’ve been trained how to!!! The bad guy usually goes for the purse first and if you’re carrying in your purse, you just armed the bad guy.
