FDOT: Weekly Traffic Alerts

April 3, 2017

Drivers will encounter traffic variations on the following state roads in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties as crews perform construction and maintenance activities.

Escambia County:

  • Interstate 10 (I-10) Routine Sign Maintenance from Escambia Bay Bridge to U.S. 29- Alternating east and westbound lane restrictions from 8 p.m. Monday, April 3 to 5 a.m. Tuesday, April 4 as crews make repairs to signs.
  • I-10 under County Road (C.R.) 99 Bridge Maintenance Work- Eastbound lane closure from 12 a.m. to 5 a.m. Thursday, April 6 as crews perform bridge work.
  • 9th Avenue (State Road (S.R.) 289) over I-10 Routine Bridge Maintenance- Intermittent and alternating lane closures from 8 p.m. Monday, April 3 to 5 a.m. Tuesday, April 4 as crews replace bridge joints.
  • Perdido Key Drive (S.R. 292) Resurfacing from the Alabama State line to the ICWW (Theo Baars Bridge) – Drivers can expect intermittent, isolated daytime lane restrictions Monday, April 3 through Friday, April 7 as crews complete miscellaneous construction activities on the project. Drivers can expect minor delays.
  • U.S. 29 at North Tate School Road Turn lane construction in Gonzales – The northbound, outside and southbound (left) turn lane will be closed from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday, April 3 through Friday, April 7 as crews extend the southbound (left) turn lane, install a new northbound (right) turn lane, and construct a new driveway at Arby’s.
  • Nine Mile Road (S.R. 10) south of Scenic Hills Drive Turn Lane Construction- Eastbound lane closure from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday, April 3, Tuesday, April 4 and westbound Wednesday, April 5 and Thursday, April 6 as crews construct right turn lanes on Nine Mile Road just east of Westside Drive and a westbound left turn lane across from Scenic Hills Drive.
  • Interstate 10 (I-10)/ U.S. 29 Interchange Improvements Phase I – Drivers will encounter the following traffic impacts from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday, April 3 through Thursday, April 6 as crews perform paving work.
    • Alternating lane closures on I-10 near U.S. 29 (Exits 10A and 10B).
    • The U.S. 29 north to I-10 westbound ramp will be closed. Traffic will be detoured north to make a U-turn at Broad Street to access I-10 westbound.
    • Intermittent lane closures on the I-10 westbound to U.S. 29 north ramp (Exit 10B). Traffic will be detoured to Exit 10A for access U.S. 29.
    • The U.S. 29 south to I-10 eastbound ramp will be closed. Traffic will be detoured south to make a U-turn at Diamond Dairy Road to access I-10 eastbound.
    • The U.S. 29 north to I-10 eastbound ramp will be closed. Traffic will be detoured north to make a U-turn at Broad Street to access I-10 eastbound. The U.S. 29 ramps to I-10 eastbound will not be closed at the same time.
  • In addition, drivers will encounter alternating lane closures on U.S. 29 near the I-10 interchange  Monday, April 3 as crews place barrier wall.
  • I-10 Widening from Davis Highway to the Escambia Bay Bridge - Alternating eastbound lane closures, between Davis Highway (S.R. 291/Exit 13) and Scenic Highway (U.S. 90/Exit 17), from 7 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. the week of Monday, April 3 as crews perform paving work.
  • U.S. 29 (S.R. 95) Widening from I-10 to Nine Mile Road- Alternating lane closures continue from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. on U.S. 29 between I-10 and 9 1/2 Mile Road and on Nine Mile Road near the U.S. 29/ Nine Mile Road overpass as crews perform drainage and bridge operations.
  • Nine Mile Road (S.R. 10/U.S. 90A) Widening from Pine Forest Road to U.S. 29- Alternating lane closures continue on Untreiner Avenue as crews perform jack and bore operations.

Santa Rosa County:

  • S.R. 89 Turn Lane Closure at U.S. 90- S.R. 89 southbound turn lane to U.S. 90 westbound will be closed from 6 p.m. Friday, March 31 through 6 p.m. Sunday, April 2 as crews remove and replace sidewalk and handicap ramps at the intersection.
  • C.R. 89 over I-10 Routine Bridge Maintenance- North right, outside lane closed from 8 p.m. to midnight. Monday, April 3 as crews clean and repair bridge joints.
  • S.R. 87 over East Bay River Routine Bridge Maintenance- North and southbound right, outside lane closed from 12 a.m. to 5 a.m. Monday, April 3 as crews clean and repair bridge joints.
  • U.S. 90 from East Spencer Field Road to Ridge Point Drive- Westbound intermittent lane closures from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, April 3 through Thursday, April 6 as crews perform routine maintenance along the roadway.
  • Stewart Street (S.R. 87) along frontage of King Middle School- Southbound lane closures from 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 4 to 6 a.m., Wednesday, April 5 as crews repair manholes.
  • U.S. 98 between North Cliff Drive and the Baptist Hospital- East and westbound outside, right lane closure from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Tuesday, April 4 through Thursday, April 6 as crews perform utility operations.

Drivers are reminded to use caution, especially at night, when traveling through the construction zone, and to pay attention for workers and equipment entering and exiting the work area. All activities are weather dependent and may be delayed or rescheduled in the event of inclement weather.

Bratt Siblings Honored At National Youth Awards

Bratt siblings Tyler and Naudia Carach were honored Sunday night at the annual National Youth Activist Awards.

Tyler was awarded a medal for social justice, won the overall award for the social justice category and received a coveted trademark blanket. Naudia was awarded two meals for community ambassador and helpful humanitarian.

Tyler, also known as The Donut Boy, began in program “I DONUT need a reason to thank a cop in August 2016 and has since distributed almost 5,000 doughnuts to men and women in blue across the country. He had the chance to share his mission with a national television audience in January on the Steve Harvey Show. In February, the Bratt Elementary students was awarded the “George Washington Medal Honor” by the Freedoms Foundation of Valley Forge

Naudia is the is the founder of Royal Ribbons, a program dedicated to improving the lives of children who are battling diseases, disabilities or who are victims of unfortunate circumstances. She spends much of her spare time coordinating and working on projects to better her community and surrounding communities. Along with many other projects in 2016, she designed, coordinated, sought funding for and built an Autism Play Garden for a child in Pensacola.

Naudia has recently began a new advocacy program called “their voice” to raise awareness about the growing epidemic of human trafficking. She is the official teen spokesperson for Safe America and has many events coming up in the near future to raise awareness for victims of this crime, including speaking at the Georgia State Capitol. Recently Naudia was awarded the Sodexo Stop Out Hunger grant for her project proposal “My Little Garden.” The first garden to help combat childhood hunger will be constructed on April 22 in the Pensacola area. She is also currently hosting a bike drive for the Childrens Home Society YouthWorks program and is serving as a gala coordinator for the 10th Annual Ladies of Favor Gala in Atlanta.

Team Fusion Earns Top Ranking After Tourney Wins

The Team Fusion 7U Travel Ball has won seven tournaments this season. They team was ranked #1 in the nation on the USSSA power ratings at 25-2. Their only losses came to 8U teams.

Team members are Dax Brooks, Cade McNair, Cooper Halfacre, Kaden Posta, Clive Pack, Kannon Ham, Nate Filbert, Bryce Rakestraw, Jackson Harris, Nolan Cheshire and Sawyer Elliott. Head coach is Glenn Brooks, while assistant coaches are Stevie McNair, Roger Pack and Keith Posta.

Tate FFA Horse Evaluation Team Places In State Event

Members of the Tate High School FFA  horse evaluation team placed seventh in the state.

Team members were Ashley Henderson, Katherine Cavanaugh, Morgan Pope and Victoria Nelson.

Individually, Morgan Pope placed 11th in the state during the event Saturday at the University of Florida in Gainesville.

The purpose of the horse evaluation CDE is to stimulate the study of, and interest in, equine science selection while providing recognition for those who have demonstrated skill and competency in this area.

Suspect Shot And Killed By Escambia Deputy In Cantonment

A suspect was shot and killed in a deputy involved shooting Saturday night in Cantonment.

At 6:45 p.m., Escambia County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a domestic violence call in the 2500 block of Southern Oaks Drive off West Roberts Road.  The suspect fled on foot to the 900 block of Deniro Court. During the pursuit,  he pulled a firearm and shot at deputies, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies then returned fire, killing the suspect. The deputies involved in the incident were not injured.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is now investigating the incident. The deputies involved in the shooting are on paid administrative leave, which is normal procedure in an officer-involved shooting.

Fillingim Landing Offers Great Recreational Opportunities

Saturday was a beautiful and busy day at Fillingim Landing along the Perdido River.

Fillingim Landing is a day-use recreation area that offers a canoe/kayak launch, hiking trails, picnic areas, pedestal grills, portable toilets and gravel parking. The area, managed by the Northwest Florida Water Management District, does not allow ATV’s or trailer boat launching. It is day use only (no camping), and alcoholic beverages are prohibited.

Fillingim Landing is located off Jacks Branch Road south of Barrineau Park Road. Admission is free.

Driver Critically Injured In Highway 97 Rollover Crash

April 2, 2017

One person was critically injured in a single vehicle rollover accident late Saturday night on Highway 97 near Walnut Hill.

The driver of a Nissan Sentra was apparently northbound on HIghway 97 when they failed to properly negotiate a curve and left the roadway  just south of Highway 164. The vehicle struck a culvert and went airborne over Highway 164 and landed on its side in a ditch next to Highway 97.

Firefighters used the Jaws of Life to cut the roof the vehicle to free the man. He was airlifted by LifeFlight helicopter to Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola.

The accident remains under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol.

The Walnut Hill and Molino stations of Escambia Fire Rescue, Atmore Ambulance and the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office also responded to the accident.

Thousands Attend Blue Jacket Jamboree, Livestock Show

Thousands of people attended the annual Northview High School FFA Blue Jacket Jamboree and the Gulf Coast Agriculture & Natural Resources Youth Organization Annual Spring Livestock Show Saturday in Molino.

The event included plenty of arts and crafts, a car show, a tractor show and more, including a special visit the Easter Bunny and an egg drop from a ladder fire truck.

The livestock show included over fifty 4-H and FFA youth exhibiting hogs, beef cattle, sheep, goats, poultry, and rabbits from Escambia and neighboring counties. The day ended with youth exhibitors auctioning off their market animals.

Firefighters Responded To Kitchen Fire In Century

Firefighters responded to a reported kitchen fire at a mobile home on Ivey Street in Century early Saturday night. The mobile home had some smoke throughout when fire fighters arrived, but a grease fire had been extinguished. There were no injuries reported. NorthEscambia.com photos, click to enlarge.

Man Shot And Killed During Domestic Disturbance Near Munson

April 2, 2017

A Santa Rosa County man was shot and killed in a domestic disturbance Saturday afternoon near Munson.

About 12:41pm, Santa Rosa County Sheriff’’s deputies responded to 11411 Green Road the Munson area in reference to a domestic disturbance. An individual identified as 44-year old Danny Wayne King was described as being the primary aggressor in the  disturbance. While deputies were in responding, 911 received another call advising King had been shot.

Deputies arrived to find that King had received a fatal gunshot wound.

Major Crimes detectives and crime scene investigators responded to the scene as well as members of the State Attorney’s Office. All parties involved in the shooting have been identified and interviewed. Detectives are reviewing evidence and statements to determine if any criminal violations occurred.

No arrests have been made at this time. Further information has not been released as the case investigation continues.
