Driver Slams Into Loaded Horse Trailer

April 5, 2017

There were no injuries when a driver slammed into a horse trailer and pickup Tuesday afternoon on Highway 29 in McDavid.

The pickup driver with a horse trailer had reportedly stopped in a travel lane of Highway 29 south of Bogia Road for a school bus with stop lights activated. The driver of car then reportedly hit the horse trailer.

Both drivers and a horse were not injured. The horse trailer was not movable following the crash due to damage to the trailer hitch. The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office livestock officer responded to the scene to transport to the horse to its destination.

The school bus was not involved in the crash.

EATING while driving. Eating and/or drinking in the car can be responsible for auto accidents . Wait till you get home to eat. A new study shows a staggering 80% of all car accidents and 65% of near misses are caused by distracted drivers more focused on their eating and drinking than the road. Actually sneezing while driving also. Most people close their eyes when they sneeze. Can you imagine a person driving with repetitive sneezing. Sneezing has been blamed for two million car crashes. A study has revealed that a third of adults say driving is the worst time to sneeze. Research also found that ten per cent try to suppress sneezing by covering their mouth when they sneeze. Thus removing their hands from the wheel of a vehicle.

Jamie’s husband should wait to eat after getting home or eat before he drives away from work. Sunflower seeds are too finicky to deal with anyway. It’s like a game of chase to grab a few and pop into your mouth. Just saying !

There are many ways to be distracted while driving. Texting is only one of them. There are too many single car accidents but usually you can’t say that or you are being judgemental. All of us have had an accident or near accident due to distracted driving. If you say different you are either a lair or you don’t drive.

Yes getting sunflower seeds is an distraction. Point proved and if he spits them out as he is driving…gross..littering on top of that.
    Look that MEME up
I for one have had enough of people making excuses and not taking responsibility for their actions..not in this case alone but as a nation.
    It has become an epidemic.
People do not realize they are doing it and others are rising up calling them out on it.
The cow was black, it was dark, he stepped out in front of me, I only had a couple, it’s not fair..it’s because of the color of my skin..blah blah.

I’m sure your husband is a wonderful person, but like they say when you look down to text you can drive the length of a football field, so I guess the same goes for reaching and looking down for your sunflower seeds.

Jamie S, I don’t mean to judge him, we all make mistakes but bending down to get the bag of sunflower seeds bag was a distraction, he had to have seen the bus prior, if not, he knows that buses are running @ that time, thanks for being concerned that kid is safe too. You know children are more important than any horse trailer, truck or horse, he could have hit that child or bus, would you still be making an excuse for him then? Whoever that child was, that the bus had stopped for is more important than that bag. Before you start telling people their comments are ridiculous & makes you sick, you need to think of the child.

I’m reading so many of these ridiculous comments and it makes me sick.
My wonderful husband, a devoted father, a veteran and a hard worker was traveling home from work when he hit the trailer. He could not see the bus in front of the trailer and he was not being careless at all. He looked down for a moment and didn’t know the trailer had stopped, it’s not easy to see the tail lights on those trailers.
He often eats sunflower seeds on the way home from work to keep him alert and he reached down to grab his bag and then that’s when the incident happened. The last driving the the trailer barely experienced any damage and was yelling at my husband as he was climbing out of his car because the door wouldn’t open. He’s lucky to be alive.
Maybe all of the busy bodies on here commenting can reserve their assumptions until they know the entire story. Thanks for the lack of concern for my husband, but he is doing well.

Hey you, driving while texting, driving while talking, sleeping or whatever you shouldn’t be doing. Hopefully you won’t be back on the roads for awhile. You could
have caused some serious injuries including the truck/trailer traveling forward and hitting the bus and children. Then it wasn’t so lucky for the family and their trailer on Blue Angel Pkwy yesterday. Young punk causing the crash in this one.

All the comments here are great !

I find it very rude that some one would slowdown, and apply brakes or stop when some one else may be needing to text or check their cell phone behind them.

OK folks, as a avid reader of NE, we all know how many car/truck crashes we see documented in this newspaper DAILY. And a majority are SINGLE car collisions. Just think how many happen that don’t make the news as they happen in other areas of the county, city or state. Hopefully some state agency is keeping up with WHY there are so many. All we ever get is “they are under investigation” by FHP, etc. And we are never provided with the cause or results once the investigation is complete. My primary guess is “DISTRACTED” driving by reading or writing a text – however, I am aware some are alcohol related (DUI or DWI). My suggestion to the authorities or legislative law makers is a new charge on the books titled: DWD – DRIVING WHILE DISTRACTED – and should carry the same punishment as a DUI/DWI. Maybe there is already a charge such as this that I am not aware of – and not just “Careless Driving”. These distracted driving crashes should be considered way more serious than “Careless Driving”.
Added note: Thank you William and Kristi for doing a great job documenting these crashes! And I used the word “crashes” instead of “accidents” because intentional texting is no accident.

Check the cell phone for recent use, Automatic $500.00 ticket, problem solved.

We had a similar accident yesterday, it happened on South Blue Angel Pkwy. This was my Facebook post
I had the scare of my life today. Teenager ran off the road and T-bones my trailer with Mick in it, I’m sure he has a headache. Thank goodness the previous owner put truck tires on the trailer. I saw him coming and gassed it, he would’ve hit Olivia’s side door if I hadn’t. We are all ok, the trailer is a mess. Mick has some scrapes on his head and praying for no lameness. We were only 1 mile from our house so before the state trooper got there we unloaded Mick and Olivia walked him home. He’s such a good boy. Thank you God, you are amazing. If the young man would not of hit us he was going to hit oncoming traffic on the other side of the highway.

Yesterday was obviously not a good day for horse trailers. My wife and daughter were en route to a barn in Pace yesterday when a young man lost control of his Lexus and slammed into the side of our horse trailer. The horse has injuries to his head and face. The trailer is trashed. The young driver attempted to leave the scene in his neighbor’s nearly totaled SUV. This occurred at around 11:45 am on S. Blue Angel just south of Sorrento.

COME ON PEOPLE, WAKE UP AND PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR DRIVING, YOU COULD OF KILLED THESE HORSES AND WHY???? NOT PAYING ATTENTION,
ALL I CAN SAY IS THANK GOODNESS IT WASNT MY TRAILER, IF IT WOULD OF BEEN THERE WOULD OF BEEN ALOT MORE DAMAGE DONE THAN JUST TO THAT CAR AND TRAILER.

..only by the grace of God were these folks and the horse spared in this accident…school bus lights flashing , a white trailer ,visible for a mile…laws have to be changed so that penalties for distracted drivers are increased to the point where people will put their phones down while driving..next time , the victims of these incidents may not be as fortunate..texting and calls CAN wait..

  15. just sayin on April 5th, 2017 6:03 am

Wow. Looks like a horse trailer is built safer for horses than our cars are for us.

  16. Lisa McCann on April 5th, 2017 5:07 am

If the truck & horse trailer hadn’t been there, they probably would have went around the bus, on either side of it, it doesn’t matter to some that kids are loading or unloading, to those that run past the bus lights without a care, doesn’t think anyone is important but themselves. Many kids, parents, bus drivers have been worried & scared out their minds because of these people being careless, irresponsible & just plain stupid. I personally have had my kids getting on & off the bus & cars would just go around the bus, some of them not too slow either, some big trucks haven’t wanted to stop or they’re trying to time them & have to slam on breaks. No child should be scared to get on the bus. From 6am- 9am & 1:30pm-5:30pm, people should be aware that there are buses running & kids getting on & off the bus. Some buses run before & after the times I listed, some are running @ 4:30 am, our ESE buses.
