Drivers Hits And Kills Two Cows After Vandals Open Gate

March 29, 2017

A driver struck and killed two cows near Walnut Hill Tuesday morning after vandals apparently let them out of their pasture.

The pickup truck driver refused EMS at the scene after he struck the two black cows before daybreak on Gobbler Road, just off Highway 97.  The two cows were part of herd of 180 in a nearby pasture. It was discovered that someone had cut the lock and opened the gate to pasture sometime during the overnight hours.

The owner of the cows says this is not the first time vandals have caused damage allowing the cows to escape.

Each cow weighed an estimated  600 pounds or more with a market value of $1,000 each.

The incident is under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol and the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (850) 433-STOP or the ECSO at (850) 436-9620.

I recall several years ago someone entered a pasture and dragged a pregnant cow to death behind their vehicle. Nobody ever came forward with information in this horrific incident in spite of rewards offered. I am sure law enforcement is looking into the possibility that the perpetrators had stealing one or several cows in mind. Passing vehicles might have prevented them from doing so and forced them to leave in a hurry. I bet many parents of teenagers in the area are praying that their youngster is not responsible.

I have been traveling Hwy 97 some the last few days and have been thoroughly enjoying seeing these cattle on the spring pasture. Makes a community look more complete with all the variety in agriculture. Hopefully the vandals will turn themselves in and make restitution to the farmer and pickup driver.

@ citizen– every thing that can be said about your comment has just about been said. One good thing about this is the front of the truck did it’s job. The newer vehicles that tend to fold up on impact are a life saver. Clint I’m sorry your dad was hurt.

“Citizen” …are you for real ? It was dark not daylight. Black Cows therefore NO # tail-lights ! I’m pretty confident that this man would have preferred not to have hit these cows. He could have been killed himself.
    Dark night..dark highway..black cows.,..now do you get it ?

    @ Citizen:

Nice advise, however…..IT WAS DARK AND THE COWS WERE BLACK.

When you are driving, you need to put on the brakes and not hit something in the road in front of you regardless of how it got there. Be attentive that anything could be on the road at any time. The law is clear about that.
It is the responsibility of the driver to not run into things.

These thugs should be charged not only with vandalism but also animal abuse causing death times two. Glad the driver wasn’t hurt more seriously than he was. My heart hurts for the senseless death of the two cows.

Time for a critter camera at that location. It would take nice pictures of whoever did it with a time stamp and everything, if one wanted to invest the cost and find a good hiding place for it.

This is bullcrap rob could have been severely hurt or killed. Why do people think this is funny. Not only does it hurt people but the animals as well. Hope they catch who did this and if I were the owner I would be putting up micro cameras to catch them next time.

Sorry excuse of human beings who did this, you might think its funny and no one saw you do it but guess what, God saw you and knows it was you so for now you might get by with what you caused but in the end you won’t. Think about that for a while!!
