Bill Would Increase Pay For Jury Service

March 4, 2017

A Senate Democrat filed a proposal Friday that would increase the amounts of money that Floridians get paid to serve on juries.

The bill (SB 1606), filed by Sen. Jose Javier Rodriguez, D-Miami, would raise the basic rate from $15 a day to $64.80 a day. Jurors who serve more than 10 days would be paid $97.20 a day, under the bill. Currently, jurors who serve more than three days get paid $30 a day.

The payments are made to jurors who are not regularly employed or who do not continue receiving their regular wages while serving on juries. Also, under the bill, payment rates would be adjusted annually based on the inflation rate. The bill is filed for the legislative session that starts Tuesday.

    6th Amendment
“In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the State and district wherein the crime shall have been committed, which district shall have been previously ascertained by law, and to be informed of the nature and cause of the accusation; to be confronted with the witnesses against him; to have compulsory process for obtaining witnesses in his favor, and to have the Assistance of Counsel for his defense.”

Jury duty is a civic duty. There may be things in life you don’t want to do but sometimes you sacrifice for the greater good. If you were accused of something you would have a right expect a fair and impartial jury of your peers. Where would you expect them to be obtained? A professional jury pool would be a bad idea.

I do believe however that the pay should be the same amount you would normally earn at whatever job you hold if the employer doesn’t pay for jury duty, and that by law you should not have vacation/sick leave deducted at work for jury duty. Bring a current pay stub and a letter from the employer stating they don’t pay for jury duty. A lot of people can’t afford to lose the time because they live paycheck to paycheck.

Increase incarnation for repeat offenders, execute murderers, rapist, child rapist, armed robbers, people convicted of home invasion. That will greatly reduce court cost, and taxpayers cost…….And reduce the need for jury.

Forced cumpulsory jury duty violates the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 8th and 13th amendments. Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude except as punishment for a crime.

This might be a way to get people to do jury duty. Most people can’t afford the lost pay.
