State Attorney To Seek First Degree Murder Indictment Against Rice

February 21, 2017

State Attorney Bill Eddings said Monday that he intends to move forward on the prosecution of Mary Rice for her part in the shooting death of Kayla Crocker during a robbery home invasion February 6 in Beulah.

The case is expected to go before a grand jury within the next 30 days with the state intends to seek an indictment against Rice for first degree murder.

She also faces two counts of accessory after the fact in the double homicide at a Milton hotel.  Alicia Ann Greer and Jacqueline Jeanette Moore were found shot to death in the Emerald Sands Inn.

Rice also faces a capital murder charge from Baldwin County for the murder of Peggy Broz.

“Additional investigation has indicated that there is sufficient evidence to move forward on the Escambia County prosecution at this time. This decision was made after discussing  this matter with Robert Wilters, District  Attorney for Baldwin County Alabama. Any decision regarding charges that Rice may face in Alabama will be made by that office,” Eddins said.

Rice was arrested after surrendering peacefully at Georgia hotel. She was an accused accomplice of quadruple murder suspect William “Billy” Boyette, who took his own life in Georgia rather than surrendering to authorities.

I just have one thing to say, IF IT WAS YOUR DAUGHTER, MOTHER, OR YOUR FAMILY MEMBER THAT WAS MURDERED BY THOSE 2 HEARTLESS PEOPLE, JUST HOW WOULD ALL OF YOU WHO FEEL SHE MAY BE INNOCENT FEEL THEN? I never in my worst nightmare dreamed of something like this happening to my family, and yet there are people out there that think she is innocent because she was scared! give me a break! being a Mother herself how in the world could she allow My Daughter to be shot in front of her 18 month son?? there is a lot more you don’t know about the case!!!, but she is far from being innocent!! I just wish people would keep their defending and pity opinions to their selves, because if you are a family member of any of the victims, we don’t want to hear it!!!

    REGARDING:
“State Attorney Bill Eddings has personally found her guilty and shared that opinion with the media. It’s shameful that a man in his position would misuse his influence like that.”

It isn’t actually misuse — it’s his job to charge those he believes he can prove committed a crime.

    David for justice
(whatever that turns out to be)

We have all broken the law at sometime so that makes us all criminals, or are you just too perfect to wait and see the whole truth and not just bits and pices. The constitution says all need to be defended especially from those who want to convict without a trail. I believe she is guilty but at a fair trail if she is found not guilty i can accept that.

Didn’t she meet upeople with him after the first two murders. Kind of hard to say she was kidnapped. She had plenty of opportunities to leave and didn’t. Be accountable for your actions and remember who you are trying to defend a criminal.

OK. This lady has already been convicted by everyone, including the media. I believe this lady was forced to do this by this killer. Yes,she did go in and buy food, etc, motel room but I think she was scared not to. If someone was holding me and told me to do this and I would be killed if I didn’t I would have to. These girls that were killed in the motel room so stated the Father this man was his Daughter’s boyfriend and how was he going to know what room and where she was UNLESS SHE TOLD HIM. The lady in custody was not there with him or the young ladies he killed would not have let him in. I, too, was frightened when they were looking for him too but I believe this lady he let go before he shot himself was a victim of kidnap. I wish I could be on that jury to look into this as it needs to be.

State Attorney Bill Eddings has personally found her guilty and shared that opinion with the media. It’s shameful that a man in his position would misuse his influence like that. Our laws say a person is innocent until proven guilty. He’s so gung-ho to prosecute her and get attention that he behaved unprofessionally and should stop this rhetoric and be held accountable, i.e., advise the public he shouldn’t have influenced them inappropriately.

Is first degree murder the same as capital murder?

  8. Mr reality on February 22nd, 2017 6:39 am

    Hey nod,

She sure knew how to use stolen credit cards to buy hardees and other stuff. Quit making excuses for this trash…its time to take the trash to the dump and bury it…

    @ Nod

So maybe she took the Tammy Wynette song “Stand By Your Man” a little too far? Maybe she didn’t have the mental capacity to know the difference between right and wrong? Well, of she’s that so out of touch from reality, she doesn’t need to be breathing anyway. Convict her, sentence her, strap her to the table, jab that needle in her arm and put her to sleep for good.

Please have a heart. The law says presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. She looks simple and may not have known what to do. She loved her man. More information may come out. What if she did not have the mental capabilities to choose right from wrong.? May the right thing be done whether guilty or not guilty.

    Well said Tg

There is no punishment good enough for what she did. If she does prison time, then tax payers will pay to house her for the rest of her life where she’ll get three meals a day, cable, health care, etc.etc. If she gets death, then she’ll be on death row for the next twenty or so years and still getting three meals a day, health care, and so forth. Her coward boyfriend did the right thing. Saved tax payers a lot of money.

@Mike— I agree. However, even before the death penalty was not a deterrent. Punishment has to be swift and severe. We have a trial, defendant is found guilty, your paraded outside, strung up and hung, over. All the innocent people wrongly convicted is few and far between. We gotta break an egg or two when making the biggest omlet ever.

  14. Kimchi on February 21st, 2017 12:05 pm

I agree whole heartedly with tg!! Bring the ole faithful back!! The electric chair or The guillotien! They should be able to see it coming at them. It costs less for taxpayers. Spectators should be allowed as they paid for it anyway, and not privatized in a closed room. Last but not least, why in the world should those criminals be spared the pain of death?!

  15. Terry on February 21st, 2017 9:53 am

I agree with you Mike. The one part I would add is that our prisons are full of hardened criminals who were all “framed” if you ask them. They do not come out reformed and most will not stay out long because they like how prison life is. For the cold blooded murders, what makes them any different than a rabid animal? They are not human of they would not have done what they did in such a heartless fashion. To me this should be brought out of court and publicly hung for all to see that this is what occurs to cold blooded murderers. If we do not start to handle the crime issue better then I am very afraid that people will start dealing with them in their own fashion and then innocent people may get hurt.

I am sorry but I really have no feelings for Rice. I feel for her family since it has put them in a very hard spot and will always be known as the family of this person. She made her choice now she needs to live up to the price no matter what it is.

  16. tg on February 21st, 2017 8:28 am

Bring back the Guillotien or give her to Alabama where lethal injection is possible. She purchased more amo for more victims.

  17. mike on February 21st, 2017 6:23 am

Well, one state is bringing back the chair. But, with a jury required to be all in agreement there will not be many death penalties anymore. With animals like Timothy Hurst allowed to live to a ripe old age, victims in Florida don’t stand much of a chance for justice.

Used to be, judge could decide whether a convicted killer got a death sentence, but it seems the powers that be are quite jealous of them having any real authority nowadays. I think this comes from the left, myself. I’m hoping Prez Trump is working on weeding out these types from the Supreme Court.

People kill each other, that’s a fact, & the penalty is not gonna change that. This I can understand if it is done out of passion, but when it’s cold blooded murder to rob or steal, the punishment must be death. We as a society will be judged on how we treat our convicted murderers, yes. But look at how Sweden is being judged on how they treat immigrants. As fools.
