Man Surrenders As SWAT Team Responds To His Century Home

February 9, 2017

As the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team finished their deployment Tuesday afternoon in the search for fugitives William Boyette and Mary Rice, they were almost immediately deployed toward a domestic violence situation in Century.

Samuel Oscar Macks, 53, was charged with felony aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, battery and  improper exhibition of a firearm. He was released from the Escambia County Jail  Wednesday night on a $20,000 bond.

Deputes were called to a disturbance involving a potentially armed man inside a home on Elsie Davis Road.  As deputies arrived, they were met in the driveway by a relative of the suspect who advised Macks was “going crazy” and that he had threatened to shoot any law enforcement that came onto his property. The relative also warned Macks was armed with a .22 caliber pistol and there were other weapons in the house, including hunting rifles and shotguns.

The deputy backed away to a more secure location to await backup, and the decision was made to call the SWAT team to the home.

Deputies made several unsuccessful attempts to call Macks; however, an arrest report indicates that he is hard of hearing and may not have heard the phone. About 25 minutes later, Macks walked out of his home with his hands up and surrendered without further incident. The SWAT team response was canceled.

Family members told deputies that Macks had become enraged during a family argument over a phone. He waved a  pistol around and threatened family members with a claw hammer, and grabbed one family member by the throat, according to an Escambia County Sheriff’s Office report. Family members stated that while he waived the pistol around without regard for others, Macks did not point it directly at anyone.

For that matter, waving a claw hammer around is unwise.

No matter how angry you are you never wave a gun around…loaded or unloaded. If you can’t control yourself then guns should not be in your presence. Guns do not kill…people kill. I support the right to bear firearms. But you must be responsible.

Why do some people think that things like this just happen. No..it’s never ok to use a gun in this manner I would have been scared to death if I was in the home and probably would have shot him. GUNS jill when not used properly have people forgot that. You don’t just carry and flag them around really

@Molino Jim— I understand perfectly what your saying. In the case of the Walmart diaper thief i agree. But in the circumstance above the guy was waving a gun around. Now had the diaper theif done that i think the shooter would have a much stronger case. Or am i missing something altogether ?

I have known sam since high school even though I haven’t seen him in years. We all get carried away when we get in an argument so don’t be so quick to judge someone

    REGARDING:
“ASSUME??? People get hurt when others assume.”

People get hurt when they assume they can wave guns around with impunity.

Never assume a gun is unloaded or that the one pointing it at you won’t shoot it or that you will survive.

    David for safe assumptions

@ Nod- you are right on this. @Chris– this week a man had stolen some diapers at a Walmart store in Orlando area and was shot and killed by a private citizen in the parking lot. The shooter “assumed” the fellow “may have had a gun”. Also hit was a young female who was in the car. How do you think this will come out. Stand your ground is not going to work. To assumed is a danger to other not just the victim.

@Nod– Yes ASSUME. You can’t KNOW what’s going on in someone elses brain so if i seen someone waving a gun i must assume they are prepared to use it and act accordingly.

Sam is a good man. Life stresses must have got the best of him. Goes to show that you never know what a person is going through or how they will deal with it.

@Sam– I must say it’s a problem regardless if this is the first or repeated event. You don’t wave a gun around period. You dang sure don’t wave it around in anger. Both are a good way to get shot. If someone waves a gun in my presence, i automatically assume they are ready to use it period.
Hope the guy gets straightened out.

he obviously over reacted to an event envolving a phone. I kinda question the need of a swat team. Sounds like after he cooled off he complied. If this is a repeated event on his part, there is a problem.
