Proposal Would Regulate Dogs In Pickup Trucks

January 12, 2017

A Senate Republican has proposed a measure that would place restrictions on dogs riding in the backs of pickup trucks or on trailers in Florida.

The bill (SB 320), filed by Sen. Greg Steube, R-Sarasota, would require dogs in the open beds of pickup trucks or in open areas of trailers to be secured in kennel cages or other ventilated containers or tethered so they cannot fall out.

The restrictions would not apply to a dog being transported by a  farmer or farm employee actively engaged in farming activities using the services of dog.  The bill includes an exemption for hunting or sporting dogs being used at a hunting site or sporting event or being transported between hunting sites or sporting events.

The proposal also would bar local ordinances that seek to regulate dogs riding in vehicles.

If approved, violation of the law could be a noncriminal traffic infraction.

The News Service of Florida contributed to this report.

    REGARDING:
“I have always said that a dog riding in the back of a truck should be against the law.”

    I dunno.
Riding in the back is much safer than riding on the hood.

(We had neighbors pile their offspring on the hood of their vehicle. Fun to watch them slide off when brakes were applied. No brain damage we could determine as compared to their usual Einsteinian selves.)

David for clear hoods in the ‘hoods

To me I do not think that people making comments on this law are against the safety of their dogs. Many breeds are very expensive especially when it comes to hunting dogs and top end shepherds. The issue I see is another law getting into our daily living and telling us how to live. In my view there are way more things that the state needs to be addressing that who rides in the back of a pickup truck. I have pets that ride with me and they are family to me thus I do whatever I can to keep them safe.

“Isn’t it part of living in the South that your dog and even your children should be allowed to ride on the back of a pick-up?”

^ No, it’s not. Some of these comments just amaze me.

Np630ss – since you tether your pets, this will not affect you.

Why would anyone be against a dog being safe?

Contact your senator district 1 Doug Broxson 850-595-1036 to stop this foolishness!

At least dogs can still ride on a motorcycle.

I transport 4 large German Shepherds (100 lbs +) the the vet in my open utility trailer. Each is secured by a leash so that they can sit or stand but not lie down. If a dog can not raise their head up over the side of the trailer – they will NOT attempt to jump out.
Never had a single incident. As a matter of fact – they RUN to the trailer to get in.

Just what we need; another law. Isn’t it part of living in the South that your dog and even your children should be allowed to ride on the back of a pick-up? I say let’s pass a law outlawing stupid laws proposed by out of touch politicians who don’t know the difference between a Beagle and a Bull-dog!

To many regulations already in place. Let’s just dumb American’s down even more so they cannot think for themselves. This is how the government wants you. Next they will tell you your not allowed to drive but so many miles a day.

What about the kids in the back of pickups? I see more kids (and sometimes adults) in the back of pickups that I do dogs in Bratt and Walnut Hill.

I have always said that a dog riding in the back of a truck should be against the law.
They are not protected when they are riding that way. The traffic on the road has increased to a dangerous state for the dog to be unprotected. That is the bottom line.
We have to protect all precious cargo

Sounds like most of you people don’t really care about dogs. They are precious to me, we need take care of them.

re:Comments, “They” aren’t working on it. The Republican Senator from Sarasota introduced SB 320.

If you think this regulation is a waste of time and just makes government bigger, contact your State Senator and your State Representative and let them know.

Democracy is a participatory thing but you have to participate to make it work.

Seems our state Senators don’t have enough to worry about !

next you’ll see state approved doggy seats for the back of trucks……. I think they need to think more about the idiots you see driving down the road with the dog in their laps looking out the window. Frontal crash, dog in lap, dog splattered on chest, owner sues airbag company because the dog was crushed……..yep, and the cycle continues. Liberal idiocy.

I have personally had to get up beside a guy on a two lane road and get his attention to tell him that his dog was hanging by a leash as he was driving. He was oblivious to the fact that the dog had fallen over the side and was hanging by his neck from the leash that was tied to the truck rollbar. Yes, put some sort of regulation on this.

  19. Rich on January 12th, 2017 7:27 am

Amazing that there is not a law that forbids this reckless behavior already. I have personally witnessed a dog falling out of a pickup while driving. Lucky me was the car directly behind the idiot. I narrowly escaped crashing my car to avoid the battered carcass tumbling towards me of what most likely was a lovable dog who just had the terrible luck of being owned by one who swims in the shallow end of the gene pool.

Sometimes common sense isn’t so common, I suppose.

I can’t believe that the legislature is wasting time considering something so asinine as this. It would seem there are way more important things to take care of, especially since the exclusions are going to fit the dog in the bed of trucks issue a very high percentage of the time. Sounds like something a Democrat would propose. Just saying.

Yet another step in the process of the nanny state. They should skip a step and go ahead and make a law that says what the temperature range can be and the size of the kennel cages also. When does it stop.
