Driver Trapped After Highway 29 Rollover Crash

January 28, 2017

One person was injured in a single vehicle rollover crash Friday afternoon between Highway 29 and Highway 95A just north of East Roberts Road.

The vehicle’s driver crashed through a power pole before overturning. Firefighters extricated the driver using the Jaws of Life.  The driver had reportedly been involved in a previous hit and run crash in the 10 Mile Road area prior to striking the utility pole. He was transported by ambulance to an area hospital.

The accident remains under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol. Further details have not yet been released.

Whew, talk about instant karma! Looks like Burnout Paradise! :)

I have to say, for a small town, Pensacola and the surrounding areas have more horrendous accidents than anyplace else that I have lived. I’ve been in areas with millions of people and don’t see nearly the road carnage that takes place with y’all on a weekly basis. Why is that?

After being hit by two hit and run drivers in the past 3 years, all I can say is, “Poetic Justice!”

Three cheers for the linemen! Just look at those power lines clinging to that pole! as straight as an arrow! Maybe we don’t need the telephone poles running straight to the ground? I know that sounds stupid, but you can’t hit what isn’t there. Sorry, no sympathy for that driver.

Power poles pine trees and oak trees usually win when they are challenged by a car.

I saw that wreck happen. It was crazy. We were glad the guy was okay though. He was very lucky to not have been thrown from that car because he was obviously not wearing his seatbelt when it happened. When we checked on him he had been thrown from the driver seat into the passenger seat but he was conscious and not too badly hurt as far as we could tell. It was said a car came into his lane and he wrecked trying to avoid it. The paramedics had awesome response time too.

In response to Whisperjet: New laws and stiffer penalties won’t help. They run because they know that local law enforcement policy prohibits chasing them.

In response to Ddg: Multiple units on a traffic stop (or any other potentially dangerous interaction) prevent attacks on our officers. You should ride along one day… it’ll change your perspective.

@Whisperjet– Your 100 right about stiffer penalties. I know a guy (not a friend) who has a criminal record including five driving with a suspended licence. One night, driving with no insurance, no license, drinking a berr, on his way to bond his girlfriend out of jail for elder abuse, he gets pulled over by an ECSO deputy in Cantonment. (I received details from his passenger). Not sure if the deputy seen the beer but all he did was write the guy a notice to appear for driving on suspended licence. The guy goes to court (driving mind you) and gets a fine for $273 and adjudication of guilt withheld. They just tacked it onto the over $3,000 he already owes in traffic fines and he walked out of the courthouse and drove home in the same friends truck he got pulled over in.
To me that is sick. Now after he was pulled over had he run over a little girl maybe they would make some changes. It seems it takes trajedy to law abiding citizens to get punishment for the law breaking ones. I went to the Clerk of Court website and he was also charged as it was his 1st offense. A misdemeanor is supposed to be a felony on the 3rd one. At any rate all it shows is the citation # not a deputy id or anything. The system failed the citizens of this county from the first line of defense (deputy) to the last (judge). This apparently happens frequently. What if he had run over a little girl though ? And what if she were your daughter ?

Dog, in response to your inquiry on traffic stops having multiple units. I think I saw an article last year that traffic stops would have backup for officer safety.

It is not the highway that is the problem!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Just as it is not guns that kill folks!!!!!! Wizen up,people….quit blaming the highways for causing accidents!!!!! Rant over…just get tired of hearing folks blaming inanimate objects for human error!!

I saw this person driving north on Hwy 95A with the hood on his car open (blocking his view) at a high rate of speed. He had his head out the window so he could see where he was going and was swerving off of the road. It was a scary sight.

  12. Madmom on January 28th, 2017 10:55 am

I was on 29 when he came racing by on the side road with the hood up and his head out the window trying to drive. This really upsets me since this was 100% preventable. I am just glad that no one else was hurt and for that guy, if you read this you better get your life together. I am sure that you have some sort of potential so use it. i hope the person in the hit and run is OK too.

I’m in 100% agreement with area resident. 29 is downright dangerous. I begin my drive from Pensacola to Cantonment each morning around 645. The 10 Mile Rd. Intersection is the absolute worst. Drivers turning east have no regard for the traffic light or laws, northbound lane blockage is almost certain and results in some drivers using the median and shoulder create their own paths. I won’t even get started on the area just north of Roberts, in front of the clinic.

I commend the ECSO for a strong presence and effort in traffic enforcement, among other things, in the Catonment area. However, I am curious and would like to know why each stop seems to require multiple units.

In response to area resident, there are more accidents in north escambia then in areas of the U.S. that have mountains and icy roads. We’ve all been witnessing these horrible single car accidents for a few years. Almost every day at least 1 is posted. I wish all drivers would remember how vital it is to keep your mind on your driving.

KEEP YOUR MIND ON YOUR DRIVING

If he wouldn’t have been running away from another accident that he caused this more than likely wouldn’t have even happened! Kids these days, I think they need to up the driving age to atleast 21 or 22!

I hope this person is ok but also when this person gets out of the hospital hopefully the judge will make a example out of this person it could have been a lot worse now is the time to stop that !!!!!

  17. WHISPERJET on January 28th, 2017 8:03 am

Hit and runs are getting epidemic in these parts..We hear if them almost on a daily basis..looks like we need some new laws or maybe stiffer penalties …or maybe some judges are not taking these offenses seriously enough..

  18. area resident on January 28th, 2017 6:33 am

WOW! It’s getting to the point to where I don’t want to be anywhere near Highway 29 north of 9 Mile.
