Phillip Ryan Clark

March 3, 2016

Phillip Ryan Clark, 61, of Berrydale, passed from this life on earth into the arms of His savior Jesus Christ on Thursday, February 25, 2016.

Phillip is preceded in death by his parents, Mr. Tice O. C. Clark and Mrs. Nina (McCallister) Clark.

He is survived by his wife, Debby (Lee) Clark of Berrydale; two sons Bryan Scott Clark of Harvest, AL and Patrick Anthony Clark of Pensacola; three grandchildren; two brothers, Rev. David R. (Paula) Clark of Cartersville, GA and Mr. Stephen D. (Glenda) Clark of Semmes, AL; four nieces, Rachael Clark of Cartersville, GA, Rebecca (Jonathan) Akins of Cedartown, GA, and Susan and Roseanna Lee of Milton; three nephews, Stevie and Johnny Clark, and Dwayne Lee of Pell City, AL; uncle, Marvin McCallister of Liberty, TX; a very special great-niece, Lauren Williams; special “nieces”, Tyler Danielle Parker and Angelique Savoie of Berrydale; special “nephews”, Zachary Parker and Nicholas Parker of Berrydale; two very special friends, Tommie Lee and Nolan “Bo” Parker, both of Berrydale; and his “babies” (cats) TJ, Bear, Little Bit, and Socks.

Phillip was a retired interstate truck driver and a member of Berrydale Baptist Church. In his retirement years he wanted to help the community by giving back to the community. His dream was of becoming a hydroponic grower of vegetables. Unfortunately, before making his dream a reality he was called home.

Funeral services were held Thursday, March 3, 2016, at Lewis Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. David R. Clark officiating.

Burial was in Pine Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Berrydale.

The family wishes to extend their appreciation to the Jay Hospital Emergency Room personnel, as well as the air ambulance personnel who diligently did their duties.

Jeanette Catherine Flagler

Jeanette Catherine (Mathis) Flagler, 76, of Jacksonville, FL, passed away Monday, February 29, 2016, in Pensacola. She was born March 31, 1939, in Milton. She was a loving and devoted mother and wife who would help anyone without hesitation. She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She enjoyed fishing, gardening and spending time  outdoors.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Edgar and Mary Mathis; brothers, Ernest Mathis, Raymond Mathis, Eddie Mathis, Woodrow Mathis (Betty) and Doyle Mathis; and sister Geneva Manning.

She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Howard Flagler; her daughters, Rhonda Danyus and Kim Moon (Doug); her son, Gary Flagler; grandchildren, Stephanie Gardner (Chris), Richard Danyus, Ashley Danyus, Douglas Moon (Kharen), Michelle Moon, Ryan Flagler, Darby Flagler and Kelly Flagler; and eight great-grandchildren; and sister,Virginia Stryker; as well as countless nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held Friday, March 4, 2016 from 5 p.m.  until 8 p.m. at Faith Chapel Funeral Home North.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 5, 2016, at 10 a.m. at Faith Chapel Funeral Home North with interment to follow at Sardis Baptist Cemetery.

Frances Nichols Black

Mrs. Frances Nichols Black, 85, passed away Tuesday, March 1, 2016, in Atmore.

Mrs. Black was a native of Evergreen, AL and a resident of Atmore since 1946. Mrs. Black was an excellent homemaker, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a member of the Canoe United Methodist Church. She is preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Mr. Herman Black.

She is survived by her two sons, Butch (Glenda) Black of Atmore and Tal (Embee) Black of Bay Minette; one daughter, Suzan (David) Amos of Atmore; one brother, I.G. Nichols, Jr. of Atmore; seven grandsons and nine great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were held Thursday, March 3, 2016, at the Canoe Methodist Cemetery with Rev. Larry Renfroe officiating.

Pallbearers were her grandsons, Chris Black, Chad Black, Cody Black, Shawn Amos, Brandon Amos and Kelby Amos.

Betty Hall Flowers

Mrs. Betty Hall Flowers, 58, passed away on Tuesday, March 1, 2016, in Mobile, AL.

Mrs. Flowers was a native of Atmore and a resident Rabun, AL for most of her life. Mrs. Flowers was hardworking. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was kind to everyone that she came in contact with. She was of the Holiness Faith. She is preceded in death by her husband, Robert Flowers; parents, Robert Lee and Genell Hall; and Brother, Clayton “Bo” Hall.

She is survived by her son, Jason (April) Hadley of Perdido; three daughters, Becky (Terry) Newsome of Perdido, Shawanna (Tyrone) James of Bay Minette and Jennifer (Gino) Flowers of Bay Minette; two sisters, Brenda (Pete) Cooper of Bay Minette and Sue Cooper of Atmore; sister-in-law, Nina Hall of Bay Minette; nine grandchildren, Brad, Terrence, MacKenzie, Jase, Haley, Tiara, Ty’Leaha, Traegan and Bella; and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 5, 2016, at 10 a.m. at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home with Sis. Helen Stewart officiating.

Burial will follow at the Bryars-McGill Cemetery.

Visitation will be Friday, March 4, 2016, from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. at Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Charlie Cooper, Chris Cooper, Tony Cooper, Allen Hall, Terrell Boutwell and Billy Gardner.

Honorary pallbearers will be Jason Hadley, Terry Newsome, Brad Newsome, Terrence Newsome and Tyrone James.

Century Now Issuing Demolition Permits For Tornado Damaged Structures

The Town of Century is now issuing demolition permits for structures damaged beyond repair by the February 15 tornado. In the days following the tornado, the town did not issued demolition permits to allow time for the removal of storm related debris from the roads and right of ways.

Escambia County building permits will be available at the Century Town Hall on Thursday, March 3, from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. All repair work and demolition within the Town of Century requires the issuance to a Town of Century Land Use Certificate and a building permit from the county.

Permitting fees for tornado repair resulting from the February 15 storm have been waived, upon submission of the required permit application documentation, by the Town of Century and Escambia County Board of County Commissioners.

Work Continues To Replace 75 Year Old Highway 97 Bridge

Construction is continuing on the replacement of a 75-year old Highway 97 bridge over Little Pine Barren Creek in Walnut Hill. Tuesday, the first layer of asphalt to the new bridge was nearly completed.

Work at the site began back in March 2015, with traffic moved to a temporary bridge in July. The work is part of a $2.5 million contract which consists of replacing the existing structurally deficient bridge, including roadway reconstruction, milling and resurfacing, guardrail, drainage, new signs and pavement markings.  Drivers will utilize a temporary roadway and bridge during construction of the new bridge. Work is anticipated to be completed this spring.

The bridge is located at the intersection of Wiggins Lake Road, about one mile north of Ernest Ward Middle School.  The bridge being replaced was constructed in 1940.

Northview To Visit Jay In Spring Football Game

March 2, 2016

A spring football game between 1A rivals Northview and Jay has been announced. The Northview Chiefs will travel to Jay to face the Royals on Tuesday, May 24 at 7 p.m.

The Northview Chiefs defeated Jay 7-0 during the last regular season.
