Obama Commutes Sentences, Two Northwest Florida Men Included

December 20, 2016

President Barack Obama pardoned 78 people and shortened the sentence of 153 others convicted of federal crimes Monday. It’s the most number of individual clemencies in a single day by any president.

The sentences of two Northwest Florida men were reduced:

Willie Brazile – Pensacola, FL
Offense: Conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute cocaine base; possession with intent to distribute cocaine base (two counts); Northern District of Florida
Sentence: Life imprisonment; 10 years’ supervised release (September 10, 1996)
Commutation Grant: Prison sentence commuted to a term of 240 months’ imprisonment.

Maurice Davon Cawthon – Milton, FL
Offense: Possession with intent to distribute five grams or more of a mixture and substance containing cocaine base; possession of a shotgun in relation to a drug trafficking offense; possession of a firearm by a convicted felon; possession of an unregistered firearm with an overall length of less than 26 inches, including a barrel of less than 18 inches; Northern District of Florida
Sentence: 240 months’ imprisonment; eight years’ supervised release; $600 fine (December 17, 2004)
Commutation Grant: Prison sentence commuted to expire on December 19, 2018, conditioned upon enrollment in residential drug treatment.

Obama has now pardoned a total of 148 people during his presidency and has shortened the sentences of 1,176 people, including 395 serving life sentences.

    @Terry
Yeah the oil field blocking is something to watch also, especially with the things going on in Turkey. I am glad to know someone else is paying attention to bigger issue regarding this election. We do not need to be dependant on foreign oil and the Russia, Iran, Turkey situation could escalate.
I know this is a bit off topic but it is about Obama’s last minute agenda, I disagree with so much of what they have left us with.

From what I see on one is that he is pardoning a felon who had gun violations yet he is against people like that having guns supposedly. He is trying to do all he can before the next congress comes in in fix it in such a way that they cannot overturn it. That treat to the UN will not be passed. Got to figure out how to overturn his bills on oil research in my view.

I guarantee that we will see these names again on some jail log because they have too long of a history and the only thing they know is crime. I believe people can change when they truly want to and stay away from all of the people of their past so that they are not tempted and that is the only way to truly turn around. That is from my past experience as a deputy in another state until I retired.

Will someone please research if Willie Brazile has any relation to Obama associate Donna Brazile.

I don’t think the first guy should be serving a life sentence for drugs. Sicko pedophiles barely get any kind of time and those are the people that need life sentences. And I do recall, if I’m correct, most of those white people involved in that huge cocaine bust at the sandshaker didn’t recieve any or much time at all. I’m not in agreement with the guy with all the firearms but I think what Obama did for the first guy was a good thing.

I’m pretty much in agreement with the other posters here, but I do want to make a comment about the second federal inmate. Part of his reduced sentence requires him to complete the 500 hour residential drug treatment program. I can tell you, this program is extremely difficult to get through because the drug treatment specialists will ferret out any and all attempts at masquerading that one is a “good guy” and simply “playing the game” to get the time off. Many times, these inmates quit because the program is not for the faint of heart. If that happens here, no reduced sentence or early release. If they do finish, they at least have a chance to “make it” on the outside because they’ve been taught a new skill set to avoid drugs, alcohol and the circumstances that led them to prison in the first place. For his sake, I hope he makes it if he is released. If he comes back, I doubt he’ll be given any type of second chance.

Another of President Obama’s brazen acts as he leaves office is a “parting shot” at American gun owners by submitting the U.N. Arms Trade Treaty to the U.S. Senate for ratification.

Hold that idiot accountable keep these names in mind
You all know it’s not if but when they get another chance to sling drugs and run amok. When they don’t learn the first time they will never learn. Maybe people are right start putting them down and they can’t hurt anyone anymore. Sad to say but what choice do we have.

Go out with a bang, pardon all federal prisoners and parolees regardless of how many they killed or maimed.
    “Catch and release”
(At least he seems to believe the possession of sawed off shotguns should be legal under the Second Amendment. Even the Supreme Court didn’t realize that.)

    David for fireworks

Would Barack choose them if one condition of the release stated that had to be his neighbors?

Harsh sentence’s for criminals and convicted felons. We can’t have that. Thanks obama.

Obama says he’s paroling/commuting sentences/pardoning non-violent offenders. Mr. Cawthon wasn’t in possession of those weapons because of their novelty. Drug dealers carrying multiple illegal weapons, in violation of previous offenses, are NOT non-violent. The fact that he had already been through the system before his latest incarceration shows he isn’t rehabilitated and doesn’t respect our laws. The fact that he hasn’t shot anyone yet is most likely only because the situation hasn’t yet presented itself. He was certainly prepared to.
I am so happy to see the current occupants of the Whitehouse leaving soon!

  12. KK on December 20th, 2016 8:32 am

Wow! He couldn’t commute the sentences of someone less harmless? He chose drug dealers who carry illegal guns.

It will be a day of celebration when he and his family leave the White House.
