FHP: 96-Year Old Causes Beulah Four-Vehicle Crash

November 8, 2016

An elderly woman was cited after causing a four-vehicle crash Monday evening on Nine Mile Road at Heritage Oaks.

The Florida Highway Patrol said 96-year old Chelton Wilson of Mobile was eastbound on Highway 90 in Mercury Sable when she rear-ended a Nissan Sentra driven by 29-year old Megan Schaff of Pensacola. That vehicle was pushed into a 2015 Ford F150 driven by 48-year old Steven Pinette of Pensacola, which was pushed into a 2007 Ford Escape driven by 44-year old Vasheta Rogers of Pensacola.

Wilson’s vehicle then traveled down an embankment on the shoulder of the roadway.

All injuries in the crash were minor.

Wilson was cited for careless driving by the FHP.

I believe the elderly are the best and most cautious drivers on the road. Its the young drivers that are in need of improvement.

At 70 years of age most of the driving chores have been turned over to my wife because I am comfortable being the passenger, tho my vision is corrected to 20-20. I am perfectly capable of driving, but hope that as my reflexes begin to slow and my eyesight begins to dim I will have enough concern for others to give up driving!

I will be 62 in 2 months and am a firm believer in testing everybody over 60 every few years to make sure that they are still safe to drive.

I soon will be 70 and think Everyone that is that age or older should be retested including a driving test. I only need glasses to read and most people don’t realize I am as old as I am because my health is good. Saying everyone over 70 needs to stop driving because of this is like saying no one should be able to get a drivers license until they are 21. The closer you get to my age the better you will understand….

You kidding me ???? A 96 year old still driving in this day
    and time ? With all the speeders,speed changes,traffic lights,4
way stops……not to mention the texters, phone talkers, eaters etc.
After 75 yo all should be tested annually both driving and knowledge
free of charge by their State. No pass ? No license !

WHAT and WHY is a 96 year old behind the wheel of a vehicle in the first place?!?! That is ridiculous. That crash never would have happened if the states would use common sense instead of worrying about getting an extra how ever many dollars it is for a driver license plus fees, I’m sorry people but in all honesty people after 70 shouldn’t drive even some in their 60 but still.

Thus happened 2-3 cars behind my husband and I and we thought for sure someone didn’t make it. It sounded horrible like no brakes were ever touched. We prayed and prayed for these people. Thank the Lord everyone will be ok. But that red light needs to hold longer and maybe the line won’t back up like it does. People charging out of Navy Federal where there is no light just so they can get out on the road. I had to brake pretty quickly bc someone did just that to me right before this accident. Its crazy dangerous through there. Continuing to keep everyone in my prayers.
