Mom Catches Burglar In Her Home; Two Arrested After Manhunt
October 27, 2016
Two suspects are in custody after a North Escambia woman came home to find a burglar inside her residence Thursday morning.
When the woman returned from running errands about 8:20 a.m., she entered her home to find a burglar inside. The incident happened at a home on Highway 168 near Wawbeek Road in the Wawbeek community west of Century.
“I noticed some things were out of place, and then there he was, standing in the hallway looking at me,” the victim said. She said she returned quickly to her toddler, who was outside in a vehicle. The burglar ran outside with the woman giving chase in her vehicle until he entered a nearby wooded area.
A K-9 team from Century Correctional Institution was able to track the suspect down and take him into custody near Wawbeek Road, just south of the Alabama/Florida state line. Vernon Lambeth of Front Street in Century was charged with burglary of an unoccupied dwelling and larceny. Lambeth is being held in the Escambia County (FL) Jail with bond set at $100,000.
His alleged accomplice, later identified as 51-year old Curtis Matthew Capers, was seen leaving in the area in an older model green SUV with bullet holes. The vehicle was located in Alabama just north of the state line on Sam Jones Road, about two miles from the burglary. Capers was arrested by the Escambia County (AL) Sheriff’s Office and taken to the Escambia County (AL) Detention Center in Brewton.
Chief Deputy Mike Lambert said Capers (pictured left) is facing a narcotics charge for items found in the vehicle. Lambert said items that may be been taken during other burglaries were also found in the SUV, possibly leading to more charges. Capers is expected to be extradited back to Florida to face additional charges.
An additional K-9 team from Century Correctional was called to Highway 168 to search a wooded area for items that were taken during the burglary.
More details will be posted as they become available.

Wow! These 2 look like the thieves in movies. Good job!
She was very blessed! Glad it wasn’t Capers in the house! Look him up on Clerk of courts Esc County Fl. Has a history of armed burglary!
She is a very lucky lady, not all ends this way. If only she had gotten up a little more speed she could have stopped him before he got to the tree line!
“Them dogs will hunt” Love it!
Good going lady! Just a coupla good old country boys trying to help themselves to your stuff. It has gotten so you can’t leave the house w/o someone watching out for it.
Capers is an old thief. Simple google search shows he’s been in the court system for years. He must like prison.
congratulations to ecsd… you guys do a fine job
It’s a shame, but I bet these thugs will spend a night or two in jail, pay small fine and be turned right back out to do it again. Great job catching them.
Better be glad I wasn’t home when he ran through my yard! So glad they got this idiot
Good job K-9 Team. Them dogs will hunt !
I have to wonder where the bullet holes came from. The shooter needs to fire a little more to the right and a little higher.
I bet this loser has been arrested multiple times and has been turned loose. Maybe this time the jerk will be sent away, but I wouldn’t hold my breath. The mom was a brave lady. Happy neither she nor the baby were hurt.
Great job! That’s why I carry! Coroner would have been called to my house?
Thieving shouldn’t be a way of life. Get a job. Collect aluminum cans. Cut grass. Rake leaves. Do something productive. Remember – keep your hands to yourself. Leave other people’s things alone. Be kind to others.
Unbelievable
Oh my I saw this vehicle turn on my road this morning while taking my child to school and I thought to myself how I have never seen this vehicle around here on our road..I was more concerned because the kids that wait for the bus on this road..and to be honest they were driving really slow like up to something.
Glad they caught them!!
