Florida Minimum Wage Is Going Up

October 24, 2016

Florida’s minimum wage will rise by a nickel an hour to $8.10 on January 1, according to the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity. That’s $2 for a 40 hour work week.

It is the fifth-smallest hourly increase since Florida established a state minimum wage in 2005. There was no increase last year.

Under a constitutional amendment passed by Florida voters in 2004, the Department of Economic Opportunity calculates the state minimum-wage rate each year based on increases in a federal consumer price index that reflects changes in the costs of food, clothing, shelter, gas, medical bills, drugs and other goods and services used in daily living. The index, which reflects the 12-month period ending Septempter 1, rose by less than 1 percent in the past year.

Florida’s $8.10 wage will remain above the federal minimum wage of $7.25.

It will be nice when they automate the fast-food industry, you will probably get better service.

I remember my first job interview, they told me they would pay me what I was worth. I told them I would not work that cheap. And that is why we have a minimum wage.

People who work at minimum wage will put the increase, of any amount, right back into the economy so it will be good for the economy, but this amount is still far below the poverty level.
We have a large amount of top heavy businesses with CEO’s and upper-level management paying themselves more than they are worth while exploiting lower level employees at minimum wage keeping those employees stuck where they still have to depend on food stamps and any other assistance in order to try and make ends meet.
If you are against a higher minimum wage, you should do the math and look at the numbers.
If a business can’t afford to pay its employees above minimum wage, they were most likely already a business that isn’t going to make it already. It’s my guess that folks who buy into the rhetoric that this increase is going to hurt small businesses have never ran a business that they owned and grew themselves.

The Consumer Price Index walks hand in hand with the Minimum Wage Increase.

Many small businesses will cease operations, Larger companies will automate, prices for goods and services will increase for everyone and fewer jobs.

If you want a better paying job/career, attend school and receive academic/technical training. Start with economics 101.

THANK YOU Gov. Scott. You are so generous to give a whole .05 /C raise. You can’t get much cheaper than this. I think they should keep their nickel until than can a real increase, maybe a dime. When is the last time state leaders have been given a 5 cent raise. What a bunch of cheapskates

If you want better pay then YOU have to be a better worker to justify more pay.

Minimum wage needs to go up a lot more. It is inhumane to pay a dedicated, hard working individual wages that do not pay enough to live a legal lifestyle.

Minimum wage goes up and your hours will go down. The folks who get free stuff are gonna want less hours so it wont interfere with food stamps and other assistance working folks somehow dont qualify for.

A higher minimum wage will keep people “on the plantation” which is exactly what the govt wants. Want more money? Go to school and quit working for minimum wages. Those wages are for high school kids, it’s called “spending money”, kids have no bills to pay.

Look for more automation in some businesses to eliminate hiring humans.
Prepare for having work hours cut.
Some in my daughter’s line of work have said they are volunteering for FEWER hours because an increase in wages means they may not be eligible to continue getting public assistance.

Just because the minimum wage is increased doesn’t mean there will be more money after increased taxes.

The bad news is that about half goes to pay local, state, and federal taxes so you’re only really making around $4/hour.

Speaking of college…one of Trumps’ agenda initiatives for his first 100 days in office is to renegotiate the typical 9% interest rate on outstanding student loans- and get them down to the 3+% interest rate level (like home mortgages)…someone should have thought about that a long time ago!

Woohoo. Working hard or barely working? More like working hard and barely able to afford to live. :D But hey, at least I could always go into debt and go to college. Who came up with currency? Let’s just trade crap.
