Man Shot By His Mother In Walnut Hill

September 28, 2016

An adult male was shot by his mother at her home near Walnut Hill Tuesday night.

Joseph Clay Howard, 39, was shot in the abdomen at a home in the 5900 block of West Highway 4, just west of Greenland Road. He was airlifted by LifeFlight helicopter to a Pensacola hospital in critical condition.

The female was in fear for her life and was defending herself in the domestic violence related shooting, according to the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office.

Escambia County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Sgt. Andrew Hobbs said the investigation is ongoing into the shooting incident, and the ECSO is working with the State Attorney’s Office to determine what charges, if any, might be filed against Howard in the incident. No charges have been filed against the mother.

The mother remained on scene following the shooting.

    I hope Joe makes a full recovery! He and I went to Ernest Ward together back in the 80’s and 90’s. I haven’t see him in a while. He participated in numerous sports and never was the “trashy” type of kid. Best wishes to you Joe Clay.

    @Ron
    In your eyes he may be a good man as you are not with him 24 hours a day 7 days a week. I would have never guessed in a million years that my older brother would attack my 88 year old mother but he did. Goes to show anyone can do anything at any moment. By the way he attacked her for not giving him $10.00.

    @Ron. What is your definition of a good man?

    Where in the article does it state he was living off her?

    Take a look at his record at Esc Court’s website. Also, from the looks of Mom’s house (& she’s probably in her 60s) Mom could sure use some help instead of someone living off her & beating on her. It’s a shame an old woman has to live like that; I’m sure she loves her son, but if she lets him mistreat her, he’ll do it again & again. She should sell that house, move into a decent apartment, & teach her son to grow up & learn to support himself since he won’t help his mother. He’s got wings of his own… & mom’s a big girl & has already shown she can take care of herself.

    The man who was shot was a good man .one of the best. I have known him since the day he was born.he would not kill his mother. Self defense is not possible. Verbal arguments that end with a gun is attempted murder no matter how you look at it.

    Not saying this was the case in this case, but too many people are saying I feared for my life, which may be true, but they were eally in no danger. It is terrible that this happened and I hope the mother is ok. Can you imagine having to shoot your own child. We all need to pray for this famlly.

    Linda,
    Opening your weapon is the only thing some people understand. Even Ghandi said it is reasonable to shoot someone who is threatening your life.

    For a society to exist:
    Sometimes, good people have to do bad things to bad people in order keep bad people from doing bad things to good people. It’s axiomatic

    Sounds like self-defense. Someone was a bad bad boy.
