Suicide Inside Escambia Administrative Building

August 12, 2016

One person, reportedly an Escambia County employee, died Friday afternoon from a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside the Escambia County Administrative Complex  221 Palafox Place in downtown Pensacola.

The incident happened just before 2:30 p.m. A local woman told NorthEscambia.com that she was entering the main floor of the building when alarms sound and officers went running. She said the building was evacuated, and she was escorted out of the building.

The Pensacola Police Department said that foul play is not suspected in the man’s death. Police were dispatched after receiving a call that at least one gun shot was heard from an office on the second floor where the man’s body was found.

The building is secure, with all visitors required to pass through security and weapons check. But employees reportedly enter the building through  a garage and do not pass through a daily search.

The Pensacola Police Department is heading up the investigation and is expected to release more information. Additional updates will be published as they become available.

County Employee had a great comment.

Prayers to everyone that knew this man. He is resting in peace from whatever troubled him. Hopefully it’s not one of the higher up’s that escalated this man’s issues. Sometimes people just can’t take the easiest “chewing out” while others just let it go.

What a shame this troubled person didn’t seek help! Isn’t this a gun-free zone?

If it hadn’t been there, he would have just done it somewhere else. Too bad he didn’t seek help.

I can not believe the employees were not required to go through the same security that every one else had to. This security oversight policy is a disaster. Maybe if they had to be checked this wouldn’t have happened in the work place. Praying for the family and co workers.

Wow, this man must have really been depressed. I’m glad no one else was hurt. May God Bless his family, friends and coworkers. Up to this time, employees were not checked by security. But don’t know about now. Never know when some disgruntled employee decides to open fire on the entire office.

This didn’t happen at the judicial building. There are no inmates nor corrections officers in this building. This happened in the building across the street that houses the recording department for the Clerk of Court and other departments. Like the article says, all visitors are required to pass through security with metal detectors.

This isn’t the court house, this is the admin building! Where you file deeds, etc. No inmates are transported there.

    @ sandy
Did you not read the same story that I did,if so why are you still curious how the gun got in there? The article said that employees go through a different entrance that does not require them to pass through a medal detector. Come on folks don’t let the easy stuff stump you.

Sandy it said that employees go through the door at the garage and do not pass through a daily search. Maybe they will change it and check their employees.

My heart is saddened. My condolences to our fellow coworker family. As an employee we don’t use the front entrance which one has to access the metal detector. As employees we enter and exited thru the parking garage which with your bage, the doors are unlocked to entrance of whatever floor you may work on

Did y’all not read the article? It said “The building is secure, with all visitors required to pass through security and weapons check. But employees reportedly enter the building through a garage and do not pass through a daily search”.

So sad. Prayers to the family and co-workers. Hopefully he/she hadn’t had any recent dealings with the County HR Director because he will tell you in a heartbeat that county employees mean nothing to him. Been there, had that speech.

They were an employee and it says the employees do not have to go through the security section

The article said that employees enter the building through the garage and aren’t required to go through a metal detector. That’s how he got the gun in…Apparently there is no metal detector at that entrance.

  16. Sandy on August 12th, 2016 6:29 pm

Curious how they got a gun in there as you have a metal dector to go through?

Everyone entering that building should of been being checked, even the corrections officers who transport the inmates to and from the jail have to check their weapons so I see no reason for anyone to be able to enter with a firearm
