Property Taxes Hiked In Century Due To Tornado Destruction

August 2, 2016

Property taxes in Century are going up to offset revenue lost when hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of property was destroyed during an EF-3 tornado.

The Century Town Council voted Monday to hike the ad valorem millage rate from 0.9005 to 0.9732 for the next fiscal year. That’s equal to a $3.63 tax increase on a $50,000 property.

The town lost $404,593 in taxable property to the February tornado, according to the Escambia County Property Appraiser’s Office.

I guess cutting costs never occurred to the town leaders?

    >>>Hmm, that’s odd. Taxes going up? For what?!? Oh, maybe it has something to do with unnecessary city addition like a SPLASHPAD

The state is paying for the splash pad, like that article says.

Hmm, that’s odd. Taxes going up? For what?!? Oh, maybe it has something to do with unnecessary city addition like a SPLASHPAD which is the topic of another article on NE.com just today. Sure, install a splashpad, the residents can pay for it.

Sec. 1.03. – Power to Levy Taxes.

There shall be no additional ad valorem tax levied on the citizens of the town above and beyond the ad valorem tax rate in effect on the effective date of this charter unless and until any increase recommended by the town council has been approved by the majority of the qualified electors of the town in a referendum called for such purpose.

This is in the Century town charter from their web site dated August 31, 2015

Does this not mean before they raise the taxes it has to go on a ballot for the people to vote?

WILLIAM. ……..well there’s the ten tickets a day plus five more. Last week when I drove through @ the speed limits, I was being passed like I was on a moped . Could you find out how many tickets Escambia County writes ( in total ) per year ? And how much income derived therefrom ? Now that could be a good news story for you !

@fisherman, that’s odd my parents home was built in 1952. it’s insured for 65000. i better check into that i guess.

    >no wonder then why theres speeding and trucks rolling over……who’s watching ?

The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office aggressively writes tickets in Century

Sounds reasonable, we can live with that.

The property value lost is only $404k ?
Or was that meant to say Century will lose $404k in property taxes per year due to lost values?

$404k in property value is only a $364 dollar loss in tax revenue per year.

“The apartments have been “announced.” Kind of like the catfish plant was announced.

    >> Hand out about 10 speeding tickets @ $100 each…..could do it every day

Century does not have a police department and does not get revenue from speeding tickets.

Our government at work. Raise taxes, their solution for most everything. When will it end?

  14. Ponderosa hill on August 2nd, 2016 9:21 am

$400 thousand in value equals maybe $ 7500. revenue ? Hand out about 10 speeding tickets @ $100 each…..could do it every day ? Plus safer roads ? Anybody thinking up there ? Guess more tax is all they know to do !

    >> property that was taken off the tax rolls should be more than off set by the addition of the new apartment complex

The apartments have been “announced”, not built. It would not be on the tax rolls until it’s constructed in future years.

One more point to be made is that the $400,000 in property that was taken off the tax rolls should be more than off set by the addition of the new apartment complex that just got permitted. Isn’t that project adding over a million to the tax rolls? If you use the logic that the Century Town Council is using, there should be a decrease in taxes due to this project adding taxable value to the tax rolls.

This article begs the question of; Why does Century still maintain itself as a City? The city provides no police or fire protection, and very meager services. They contract out the garbage collection, and code enforcement is handled by the County. The County/City of Pensacola run the library. It seems like a simple matter to sell the water, sewer, and gas departments to pay off the debt and let the county take over parks. The end result would be no more Century taxes, and no more bungling Century City Council, and nobody would miss either.

    @Sam
Insurance companies will not write polies for homeowners on property like the ones destroyed in Century. My mother in laws home was built in early 1950 and no insurance company would write a policy for her home. I spent three days on the phone trying to get a policy for her. We the family had to step in and help her.

Sorry for peoples loss. If they didnt have homeowners insurance, it’s not my fault. Why does my tax go up to off set their lack of coverage?
