Bad Monday: Tree Crashes Down Onto Two Vehicles Sitting In Traffic

August 8, 2016

A couple of drivers had a bit of bad luck today on Davis Highway when a tree came crashing down onto their vehicles. It happened midday on Davis Highway at Johnson Avenue, near West Florida Hospital. There were no injuries. NorthEscambia.com photos by Kristi Barbour, click to enlarge.

    Gotta love 12th Ave where the trees meet in the middle and there are no traffic lights under the umbrella section.

    The old oaks can kill you and have killed people. I have seen this happen many times without any wind at all.
    If the tree has a split trunk, pay extra attention. This happens because the tree was damaged years ago. The tree heals and appears perfectly healthy but it can have a void or hollow area in the trunk making it weak.

    As the tree continues to grow, the weight of the limbs stress it until it breaks. As others have stated, the void will hold water and cause rot from the inside and harbor ants and other wood eating insects.
    If you have a majestic oak or other hardwood with a bent looking trunk or multiple main limbs on one side, keep a close eye on it. It can kill you.

    A perfectly healthy looking oak tree fell across our roof several years ago. The outside appeared normal, but the inside was eaten away by ants. You see ants on a tree, you need to get the tree treated. Ants will devour wood. Sometimes you will see ant beds on tree stumps. Leave the ant beds there and the stump will be eaten away. Our neighbor has a large water oak that is beginning to lean. Guess what, you can’t stand under the tree without ants falling on you. That tree needs to be removed before it falls on their house or in their pool. I’m sure if that many ants are on or in a tree, then water could seep in like fisherman said. Okay enough horticulture for the day.

    @Mike
    Top photo shows where tree snapped there is a nice size hole in the tree. Over years water gets into tree and it rots from the inside. Strong wind will cause it to give way. This happens a lot.

    strange, an obviously healthy looking tree just falling. it’d be interesting to hear from an expert why this happened.
