Cantonment Man Critically Injured After Hitting Pillar At Shopping Center
August 9, 2016
A vehicle driven by a Cantonment man collided with a shopping center building on in the 300 block of East Nine Mile Road Tuesday morning.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, 66-year old James Maddox of Cantonment was parked at Nine Mile Plaza at 312 East Nine Mile Road when he began to travel in the parking lot and veered into a brick pillar. He was transported to Sacred Heart Hospital in serious condition. The crash was not alcohol related, per the FHP.
Any charges against Maddox are pending as the FHP continues their investigation. The Ensley Station of Escambia Fire Rescue and the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office also responded to the crash.
Both restaurants near the crash location are expected were open for business as usual.

Shay, looks like you’ve missed your calling. You should be a CSI investigator. Good job determining what happened here.
The windshield was shattered from the outside(the damage is toward the interior of the vehicle. If the victim had hit the windshield the glass would have been pushed out) meaning it wasn’t caused by ANY part of the man hitting the windshield. I agree with the likely scenario that it was smashed by debris after the car hit the building.
Good to know that the break in the windshield was from debris. Prayers to this gentleman that he recovers.
Also, Hello Richard Accord @ 510 Irene Lane Cantonment
This man is a neighbor and good friend of mine. He had a medical condition and passed out. The windshield was broken by debris from the column, not from his head hitting it.
The passenger side ground effects are missing in the photos. I suspect you’ll find it in the yellow painted curbed planters behind the vehicle. Judging by the impact he had a medical condition , went over the planters…accelerated to a minimum speed of 40 to cause that amount of damage .. Lastly, I’ll bet the cameras from Gulf Winds Credit Union will answer the questions. medical condition, attempted robbery. From the looks of the car (Newer, Clean, all stock,) the driver was not waiting for mediocre Pizza nor does it look like an experienced buffet diner. Get well soon .
Whoever built this building knew what they were doing.
>>>The break in the windshield suggests he wore no seat belt. Usually the story reports this fact. Critically injured might be the result of that mistake..
The FHP report did not reflect if he had on a seat belt or not. The window break *might have been from a falling brick.

Give the guy a break, things happen to everyone at some time or another.
It looks like they were going pretty fast, I wonder if this is another case of someone getting the pedals confused? Thank goodness the steel post was anchored down to the concrete good, else they would’ve went straight into the building
Maybe they should get the hint and put in a drive thru……….
HOW…..JUST HOW?!? How is it that so many vehicles run into stationary objects in this area?!? It wasn’t too long ago that a vehicle ended up upside down amd had slid into the coerner of the bingo hall on Chemstrand. This is ridiculous.
Hit submit too fast.
Seriously, hope the driver is ok.
Trying to catch a Pokemon?
I guess they didn’t know that they don’t place polls in a drive thru.
