Northview Head Football, Baseball Coach Wheatley Resigns

July 21, 2016

Northview High School head football and baseball coach Sid Wheatley has resigned to accept a coaching position in his native Mississippi.

Wheatley said he has accepted a coaching and teaching position at Kosciusko High School in Mississippi, not far from his son in Jackson and his parents in Philadelphia, MS.

“It was  the toughest decision of my coaching and teaching career,” he said, “but it came down to a chance to return home to be near my family. My parents are only getting older.”

Wheatley’s career at Northview spanned 11 years, with a 50-31 record as head football coach. But the numbers he will remember most are probably 42-21.  After losing out a couple of years at the state semi-final level, Wheatley led his Chiefs to a 42-21 Class 1A state championship victory in 2012 in Orlando.

“I would not trade that win for anything,” he said.

“I know there are many of his former players who will want to wish him well as he turns another page in his latest chapter of his life.  I know that I will miss him dearly,” Northview Principal Gayle Weaver said. “We thank Coach Wheatley for his years of service and we wish him well as he moves back home to be with family.”

Weaver said the school will advertise a single job opening that will include the head football and baseball positions. She expects the position will be filled in a matter of weeks, prior to the start of the football season.

“Northview has been a second home for me. I thank Mrs. Weaver, the teachers and staff, the community and the kids for the opportunity,” Wheatley said. “I will be Northview’s biggest fan in Mississippi.”

I hope the best for Coach Wheatley and thank him for what he has done for Northview!

My hope is that Marshman will be the next coach for the Chiefs! I can’t think of another person more deserving to be head coach! He gives 100 percent to this school. He is supportive to the players on and off the field which to me speaks volumes. (I know this personally since my son is a football player.) He has the respect of the boys and cares about them as people. He implemented a program designed to help them to become better people, which is desperately needed at this age. He is a great mentor and coach!! I just believe Marshman is the right choice as head coach! His heart is with this team!!

Many of us know that Coach Ty Wise would come back to Northview in a heartbeat if given the chance. Please let your voice be heard to the appropriate individuals by phone calls or emails to support him coming back and making a difference in the sports programs at Northview. Backing Coach Wise! Let’s make Northview great again!

If Marshman wants the job he should be given the opportunity. He handled things very well when Wheatley missed the jay game last year (baseball). Good luck to Wheatley and congrats on his new endeavor.

Good luck and congratulations Mr. Wheatley.
Thanks for all you’ve done for the program. It had to be tough at times with some of the things I heard out of the stands from the bleacher coaches.

It’s impossible for a head coach to give 100 percent to 2 sports. Especially with baseball and spring training overlapping to some degree. There’s no doubt the sports program will suffer with this situation in the long run.

I wish Coach Wheatley well in his next endeavor. There’s nothing like being near family and aging parents. I am hoping that Coach Marshman gets to be the replacement as Head Coach. He has all that is necessary…knowledge, love for the sport, and a connection with the players. I have heard many say that he is just as invested in his players off the field and he is on the field. I see this to be true. He expects hard work, delivery, and dedication. He gives the same hard work, delivery, and dedication to the players and team. To me, Coach Marshman epitomizes what a Northview Chief represents. I feel he will be such an asset to the programs.

It is insane both positions are combined into 1. No other school in the county has to do that so why do we. I see them ending up hiring two different positions because of the lack of interest in having to coach both sports. I’m a former student and I personally love Mrs. Weaver, but think it is time for her to step down or make the right decision for the students and hiring one coach for two sports is not the right decision. Both sports will suffer greatly from this. If I could advise I’d contact Wise and see if he’s interested in coming back and winning and if he’s not interested go after Greenwell. Then when it comes to baseball I’m sure there is a former student/player that is interested (Brad Lowery).

@Former Player, you are spot on! That WOULD be a “WISE” decision! Go Chiefs!

  20. Former Player on July 21st, 2016 7:44 am

All I can say is that I hope Mrs. Weaver and Northview make a Wise decision in their selection of a new coach. Coach Wheatley was a great coach, he took Northview to the most successful seasons we ever had. So in order to carry on that legacy, a Wise decision must be made for the next head coach of the Northview Chiefs.

Coach Wheatley will be missed in a big way. An all around great guy…thanks for all you have done with Northview football and baseball. Best of luck in your hometown. Our loss is their gain !

Thank you Coach Wheatley for everything!! Wish we could’ve got you two of those rings! Good luck at your next stop!!

  23. Old Coach on July 21st, 2016 5:48 am

    Good luck Sid.
In relation to advertising a single position for head football and head baseball coach will be difficult. That means the chance that you would get a top notch coach will go down. A really good head football coach will not want both positions. In that case both sports may suffer. IMOP.
