Century’s Mayor: ‘I Violated The Law’ With Work On Private Road

July 19, 2016

Century Mayor Freddie McCall told his town council Monday night that he may have broken the law with work he had performed on a private road in the town. But questions remain as to the actual status of the road and if the mayor really broke the law.

McCall said that about six to eight months ago, he had a load of dirt dumped into washed out areas on Ashford Alley, a dirt roadway off Jefferson Avenue.

“I made a mistake and dumped a load of dirt,” McCall said. “I violated the law before.”

Recently, a resident approached McCall and requested additional maintenance on the road. He said recent research found that Century does not  have a deeded right-of-way or easement on Ashford Alley according to Escambia County Property Appraiser records.

Monday night he asked the town council to consider acquiring an easement and making repairs to Ashford Alley, a process that he said will cost about $1,000.

The mayor said the town may already have a valid claim to an easement because the town had previously maintained the road for several years, and the town has been paying for a street light for 15 or more years on Ashford Alley.  Florida law allows a city to assert ownership of certain rights-0f-way under Florida law if the city has maintained the road for more than seven years.

The Century Town Council agreed to have their attorney research the issue and report back.

McCall said two families live on Ashford Alley.

I agree with “retired”. And if that is what’s going on, that is so sad, that anyone would try to take a man of his character, and try to ruin his name! At least he was honest, you tell me of a politician who is that honest. He is a man who loves his community and will do anything to help anyone! We need more men like him!

Century is still standing and will in all likelihood survive this isolated faux pas.

Well I just put my foot in my mouth by commenting before I read and comprehended the story fully. I hope you get the easement to continue to help these people out. Good job and especially for being thoughtful honest and careful. I suppose I am being watchful also with this election coming up. May I also be careful what I say and not let personal bias and past actions make me suspicious, nor react to a sensational headline.(Good Job, by the way William) it got my attention. It is important at all levels that we the people including the leaders are responsible for our own actions and work together for the betterment of all. Let us grow up and mature into what we can be Century. “May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in thy sight…….”

We support you McCall and town council. I wonder who would. dig into this and what purpose would it serve? Sounds like someone wanting to stir up trouble to us.

So if you break the law accidentally, it’s okay? So if you do something good even though it’s illegal, it’s okay?
    “Just sayin”

In my opinion, Mayor McCall would never do anything intentionally against the law. He is a man that I have found to be honorable and who is one who loves his community!!

What do I call that: TOTAL HONESTY. I only wish and pray all our politicians would be honest.
Plus, I totally agree with Molino girl and Sam.

Well if that’s the worst thing he’s done I’d say he’s doing a good job.

No harm, no foul. Trying to help people is no problem. No personal gain was envolved.
