Cantonment Woman Charged With Child Neglect After Pot, Cocaine Found Near Child

July 10, 2016

A Cantonment woman is facing felony child neglect and drug charges after authorities say she was smoking marijuana and had cocaine and additional marijuana in the car with her child.

Escambia County deputies reported finding driver Timothy McKinley Sinkfield, 24, and passenger Mercedes Chanté Lowman, 24, in vehicle with the lights off sitting in the middle of Tiki Lane. The responding deputy said he smelled a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle and found a half burned marijuana cigarette in plain view in the front center console tray.  A license check revealed Sinkfield’s license was canceled indefinitely in 2014.

Sinkfield was charged with misdemeanor driving with a suspended license and marijuana possession, plus he was arrested on failure to appear in a previous drug case. He remained in the Escambia County Jail with bond set at $13,000.

Lowman’s child was in a child safety seat in the back of the vehicle, according to an arrest report. In a small bag sitting on a diaper, deputies reported finding three smaller bags of marijuana and a crack cocaine rock. She was “Not upset at all and acted as if she could care less about the safety of (the child),” the deputy wrote in his report.

Lowman was charged with felony child neglect, felony cocaine possession and possession of marijuana. She was released from the Escambia County Jail on a $11,500 bond. The Department of Children and Family Services is also investigating..

I hope the child will be placed with someone who will love and care for her. As for the mother, nothing will happen to her, probation, maybe, that will be it.

The article doesn’t say the drugs were IN the diaper bag. It says the drugs were IN a small bag that was sitting ON TOP of a diaper. Not saying they weren’t hers, because I don’t know her. Just trying to keep it clear.

At home – not with him – then why was the child in a safety seat in the back seat of the car? Please don’t expect us to believe that.

Be accountable for your passengers at all time.. Daycare teacher or airplane pilot it don’t really matter… I’ve been a driver along time and never had to worry about drugs being dropped in my vehicle or diaper bag…..the deputy didn’t arrest you for using drugs he arrested you for being in possession of drugs…

  8. Stupid is as Stupid does on July 11th, 2016 3:03 pm

If you were innocent ,what did they arrest you for ??? just hangin out ??
prove your not doing drugs, submit to a hair folical test given by someone who knows what the hell theyre doing. and Regina , CPS-DCF in the state of Fl sucks !!!! I know many kids who are still living with parents that do not give a crap about them…… they use them for income….. foodstamps, welfare, and any other hand outs they can get their dirty lil paws in to..makes me truely ill . there is no help
for children living this way. DCF says their job is to try and keep families together, not seperate them…. HA RIGHT

Time for the young woman to begin looking at the decisions being made and the company being kept. It may seem cool hanging out with the type person she was arrested with, but in fact has led to an unfortunate circumstance that could linger in her life for a substancial amount of time. Is that guy going to tell the police that she knew nothing of his illegal activities, and that he stashed his drugs in the baby bag without her knowing? Cause even then, I’m pretty sure its illegal to have your kids around drugs, and a half burned joint or whatever isn’t very inconspicuous, so she knew well and good what was going on. Lifestyle chamges are in order or she will be walking a very hard road…by herself…cause people like ol boy don’t stay for the fun. This is what happens when you go slumming…looking for that bad boy.

    @ Mercedes

So why is a daycare teacher out after midnight with her infant and in the company of a drug dealer?

  19. jeeperman on July 10th, 2016 2:08 pm

The “gentleman in question” threw his drugs “into your car” and they landed inside your child’s diaper bag?
    Really?
I guess the cops are lying?

If in prison or not, we the taxpayer are already paying the way for these types.

  20. Mercedes Lowman on July 10th, 2016 1:38 pm

People need to know what is really going on before they comment on things they have no idea what is really going on I love all of my children they are my life, the man in question threw his drugs in my car and the police even stated that they knew the drugs in question were not mine but still arrested me I will in fact beat all of these charges I am a daycare teacher and I have been for 4 years I do not do drugs nor do I sell them so pll pls mind your business worry bout your own lives please

Why was she able to keep her child and take him home? That’s not right. CPS should have taken that baby to a safe house.

  22. Willis on July 10th, 2016 9:55 am

Man, if y’all would just hurry up and vote to legalize….

    NOT!!!

  23. Puddin on July 10th, 2016 9:35 am

Pot is no worse thank beer and cigarettes. That said, you don’t drink and smoke around your kids! The cocaine is a different matter altogether. Hope they both get parenting classes and drug intervention. If she truely doesn’t want her child, there are lots of people who would love to have him or her.

She used to work at the daycare center my son goes to.

  25. tg on July 10th, 2016 8:01 am

People just ruining their lives so taxpayers can support them forever.

  26. anne on July 10th, 2016 7:38 am

Not every woman wants to be a mother. But they don’t want to prevent them nor give them up for adoption. The officer stated she could care less about the child and he was right. Marijuana causes one not to care about anything, that’s why users love it. Much like drinking.

  27. Grandma on July 10th, 2016 6:07 am

Officers, you just saved that child’s life. Good work.

  28. say it aint so on July 10th, 2016 5:45 am
