Cantonment Woman Arrested After Young Child Rescued From Hot, Locked Car

July 6, 2016

A Cantonment woman was arrested over the weekend after deputies say she left her young child in a hot, locked car while she was inside a Davis Highway business.

Lindsay Ann Mason, 33, was charged with felony child neglect. She was released from the Escambia County Jail on a $5,000 bond.

Witnesses told deputies that they saw Mason pulling on the locked door of a black Chevrolet Cobalt in the parking lot of CSL Plasma at 5007 North Davis Highway. Witnesses said the child was in the driver’s seat, sweating and screaming. Mason said she just needed to get the car keys from her boyfriend and went into the plasma center for at least 15 minutes while the child remained in the car with all the windows up and the vehicle not running.

Meanwhile, another witness told deputies she went to her trunk and grabbed a tire iron, broke the rear driver’s side window and grabbed the child. She said the child’s shirt was soaked with seat and his face was “apple red’, according to an Escambia County Sheriff’s Office arrest report, adding that she believed the child had been in the black vehicle for at least an hour.

When Mason exited the plasma center, she took the child, placed him back in the Chevrolet Cobalt and was about to leave when deputies arrived. The child vomited, and Mason stated that he was fine, just hot, the report states.

And Escambia County Sheriff’s Office deputy reported that he arrived to see a child with a red face, sweaty hair, a sweat stained shirt and a full dirty diaper being placed into an ambulance by Escambia County EMS.  After her arrest, Mason told deputies that she had stepped out of her car to put her hair up, at which time the child turned off the ignition and locked the vehicle. Mason said she went into the plasma center to retrieve keys from her boyfriend and emphatically said that she was gone for only two minutes.

It was 92 degrees with a heat index of 101 at the time of the incident, according to the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office.

The child was transported by Escambia County EMS to Sacred Heart Hospital. The incident is also under investigation by the Florida Department of Children and Families.

No charges will be filed against the woman that broke the car window with a tire iron because her actions were justified, according to the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office.

How could the child even lock the car if it should have everything been in a car seat? Hope she gets in big shot for this.

@ A mom the child was young enough to still be in diapers and was left alone in a hot locked car with all the windows up in July those are the facts of the story so are you saying that’s okay? That it is not in fact a crime (which it is child neglect/endangerment)? If the woman went back into the plasma center to get the keys then why did it take so damn long knowing full well that the child was locked in that deathbox? Yes in Florida during July a car that is locked and not running with the windows up is a deathbox for any person or animal left in said vehicle. Are you not from Florida? Is this your first summer here? I could understand you confusion as to what the woman is DEFINETLY GUILTY OF if this is the case. If not and you have been here for awhile then you should know this. I make this promise to you A mom and all other parents out there (yes I am a parent) if you leave your child/ren like this woman did I will break your window and save your childs life I also promise to call the cops an ambulance and I will make sure you do not drive off like this woman tried to do.

I don’t care, under no circumstances is it okay to leave a child in a hot vehicle with the windows rolled up…Sorry no excuse. The child should not have been left unattended in the first place.

This makes me wonder what would have happened to the child if this “person” was allowed to leave with it, since it had already thrown up. “She could possibly be facing a murder charge instead.

You don’t leave a child unattended in a vehicle for any reason… take the child in with you and get the keys.

nod, if you & your wife has keys to both your cars then couldn’t the woman have went back in to get other set? Not saying she did or didn’t do anything wrong but if you have them then others could too or are you just the type that has what others do not? If she did its wrong, but even I have been accused of leaving my kids in the car for hours when I did not, yes I left them in the car with older kids & they had only been in there for few short minutes if things had been pressed there would have been proof, but the person still lied. If the baby was in danger is one thing but to out & out lie to start something ask yourself if you’ve never done that, I guarantee that you have left somebody in a vehicle before, most people will deny the fact. I guarantee you that your not perfect. Lets not judge unless we were there & witnessed the whole situation, from the beginning to end.

Chris, this woman did a terrible, horrible thing andshe should be punished to the full extent of the law. That said, my wife and I have keys to both our cars.

The article didn’t say how old the child was or if it was old enough to know how to lock and unlock a door. By the child having a full dirty diaper seems that it was very young and should have been in a car seat. If the boyfriend had a spare key why did it take so long to get it and to leave a child unattended in a hot car shows clearly to be child neglect.

OMG! This is terrifiying! What is wrong with people??!!! Thank God for the person who took it upon themself to break that window and get that baby out of there! You are a true hero! That baby could have died in that car! There is absolutely no excuse for this. I hope the state takes that baby (and any others that this low life has) and lets someone raise them who will be kind to them and show them love. Just breaks my heart.
This is why children grow up to be evil and hateful… having parents like this!
    I pray for this child!

That girl hasn’t seen 33 in at least 10 years stupid people do stupid things this child should never be left with her alone ever again sounds like the boyfriend is areal upstanding citizen right! !!!

  15. Caketop on July 6th, 2016 7:35 am

Lock her in the same car for 5 hours.

  16. Dennis on July 6th, 2016 6:28 am

Thanks to everyone involved. Please make sure you stay in touch with the ’system’ to make sure they know that there are witnesses willing to testify. Thanks again for caring!!!!!

There are cameras all over the plasma center. As long as they’re functioning, they’ll know exactly how long she was in there.

  18. chris on July 6th, 2016 6:06 am

If the child turned off the ignition, why did the boyfriend have the keys in his possession? It seems the evidence is not supporting her story.
