Century Deputies Write 1,286 Traffic Tickets In Three Months

June 23, 2016

As attention has turned to a Century curve that is prone to truck rollover accidents, attention has also turned to speeders and traffic enforcement on North Century Boulevard.

Wednesday afternoon, Escambia County Sheriff’s deputies were seen making several traffic stops on North Century Boulevard. From a woman not wearing her seat belt, to a vehicle clocked at 57 mph in the 35 mph zone, to an 18-wheeler, deputies were busy with citations.

According to the latest data available from the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office, deputies in the Century precinct — the area north of Molino — wrote 1,286 citations during the March 1 to June 1 time period. While a specific breakdown was not immediately available, most of the citations were written on North Century Boulevard in the Century area and on Highway 97 in the Walnut Hill area, including the Ernest Ward Middle school zone.

“The deputies in the Century area have been very proactive in enforcing traffic laws for the safety of our citizens,” said Sgt. Andrew Hobbs, spokesperson for the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office.

It’s an effort that that has not gone unnoticed by Century officials. At a recent meeting between the Century Town Council and the Florida Department of Transportation, Century Mayor Freddie McCall expressed his appreciation to the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office for their frequent traffic enforcement efforts on North Century Boulevard.

Keep up the good work. If the sign says 35, that is what it means. If the sign says stop, that is what it means. The laws are put in place to keep us and others safe.
The number of tickets is just a tip of the iceberg of the cars that speed thru Century. People keep speeding even when you are working the area. Too many speeders and not enough deputies. Keep it up and we appreciate you.
OBEY THE LAW and you want get a ticket.

    @Century Resident
If you didn’t do any thing wrong go to traffic court and fight for the fact you were wronged. You have that option and don’t cry I don’t have the time. If I were given a ticket that I felt was wrong I would fight it.

The Deputies of Century must be trying to compete with Gulf Breeze in giving out tickets. Escambia vs. Santa Rosa. Two areas that you don’t speed. Just a short drive through both of these cities. Be patient and drive the speed limit. What’s so hard about that???

@Barrineau, the city of Century receives no compensation whatsoever from any ticket. The county gets all revenue.

  5. Truckers stay right is "right" on June 23rd, 2016 8:45 pm

Yes we know, without truckers, nothing would be delivered.

On the other side of the coin, truckers are on the clock, the rest of us have places to be too, but most aren’t being paid to drive so please move over or stay in the “right” lane in the first place.

    Respect must be mutual…

If you are a local then you probably already know that you do not speed in Century. And In all honesty there probably isn’t any other way for the town to make money.

If sheriff Morgan is reading this, you need to write even more tickets, have your deputies burn up some ink pens all over the county. I would like to see more folks on this forum crying, because the only way you get through to some is getting some of their money. Florida also needs to do away with NO FAULT that will help get some bad drivers off roads, and don’t subsidized some folks auto insurance this is also bad.

I wanna know how many of those tickets were fair? I got one and mine was NOT fair because I did not do anything wrong!!!!!!

Deputies – Speeding along Hwy 297A to Pine Forest Road a great place to be. Also, drivers running stop sign at Hwy 97 and Hwy 297A. See at least 2-3 cars run it when I’m driving on Hwy 297A. Also, drivers are continuing to run the new red light at Pine Cone Lane and Hwy 297A. 4 way stop at Kingsfield Road and Hwy 297A, they don’t always stop. Potential tickets are all along this route.

Speed limits are not a suggestion to how fast you can drive, it is the law. All too often drivers ignore these signs and drive like they want. Find it odd that driving the speed limit usually means the driver behind you is trying to climb in your trunk… Drive the posted limit folks and we will all get there safely..

Having the County Sherrifs here is a Blessing. We appreciate you Truckers also. Maybe Century could push to develop a huge Welcome Center/ Truck Stop. Just past the Family Dollar. Put in a caution light encourage everyone to Slow Down and Smile, Eat a bite at a new 24/7 Waffle House. Make it a place to have coffee with a cop, even make the drainage pond part of new Landscape for a Photo Op. Employ a few folks. Let’s all get along and appreciate each other. Share the Road, Arrive Alive. Fines and tickets must be necessary but it would be better if everyone did just slow down and perhaps look forward to a pit stop.

There needs to be a Century bypass.

This would enhance travel and keep Century residents from being bothered by traffic.

Great work deputies! Let ‘em know they can’t speed thru Century! :)

Old Trucker, your comment on the truckers bring the goods is at 100%. I’d rather follow an 18 wheeler on the road than any one and yes, without the truckers we have nothing on the store shelves.

  15. anne on June 23rd, 2016 9:41 am

They could easily write 3000 tickets on 9th Ave in the same amount of time. I’m taking 12th Ave trying to save my own life. I can sit out in the yard and tell you they are doing 60mph to pass others doing the speed limit and they are proud of it. God Bless the officers in Century. I would call them Guardian Angels of the public.

  16. Just Wondering on June 23rd, 2016 9:20 am

The area from Tulip Lane to Piggly Wiggly is 35 miles an hour, so tickets are being written coming and going. If you are speeding, then you have to pay the fine! That’s the law…. There are no houses for a distance there, on Killam Rd where there are houses with children and not to mention a series of sharp curves the speed limit is posted 55 miles per hour. Does this make any sense? People fly up and down this road all the time.. County commissioners will promise the moon till they get elected! Anybody else have a comment on this that know that area????

The road sign in the photo of the 18 wheeler pulled over in front of the Panhandle is a good example of the ignorance of the FDOT. (And all states) If there needs to be a lane restriction for trucks, this one should be “Trucks Use Left Lane”. I’m opposed to lane restrictions unless there is a good reason for them.

“If you bought it, a truck brought it.”

  18. fisherman on June 23rd, 2016 7:04 am

That’s $128600.00 at $100.00 ticket even more as the 57 in a 35 is well over $300.00. Seem like a lot of tickets but they could do that in one month on Davis/Airport/Hwy 29 Blue Angel etc.f they wanted to.

We love you ESCO. I look at the dispatch log online and see when you are running tickets on North Century Blvd, and into town on West State Line Rd and near Shady Lane, Tulip and Broomes you clock a separate stop at almost four minute intervals sometimes. Yes folks speed through here even though you work the area, it still occurs. The number of tickets is high but just a tip of the iceberg. Keep it up and we appreciate you.
