One Injured In Highway 29, Highway 97 Crash
May 13, 2016
One person was injured in a crash involving a pickup truck and a semi late Friday morning at Highway 29 and Highway 97.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, 27-year old Bert Walker of Cantonment was traveling north in the left turn lane on Highway 29. The semi truck, driven by 59-year old Mark Lambert of Atmore, was southbound on Highway 29. Walker then turned his 2007 Chevrolet Colorado pickup into the direct path of the semi, the FHP said.
Walker was transported to Sacred Heart Hospital with minor injuries. Lambert was not injured.
Walker was cited for failure to yield the right of way.
This was the firstĀ injury crash with significant property damage at the intersection since a traffic light was activated in June 2015.

One problem with the intersection is when north bound traffic on 29 try to make a U-TURN to get back into the Thumb. Traffic south bound on 29, traffic turning south bound from 97 and traffic coming out of the Thumb all meet. While there is an acceleration lane south bound a lot of drivers seem to be confused as to what to do.They’ll pull into one of the traffic lane at a slower speed than other traffic.
When the turn light to 97 turns red for STOP…then changes to green …. you now have the right-of-way to turn left….knowing that the traffic going southbound is still coming and YET we still cross the road….the traffic is too fast for people to take these chances….don’t you think ( for safety ) the turn light should stay red??????
Since the light was installed there have been fewer accidents at this intersection. There used to be at least one every week and sometimes more. I know because I either see or hear them from where I live. Glad they put the light in there!
Wow, Mr. Walker was incredibly lucky, getting hit by a semi usually does not go so well for the guy in the 4-wheeler. A testament to airbags, when they work correctly.
Thank the Lord he was not killed, praying for a quick recovery.
People are not realizing how fast oncoming vehicles are traveling when crossing
these lanes. Just stop, wait know when it’s their right of way. Don’t be in a hurry, you’re taking a gamble with your life. You may be the loser.
Buckle Up!
I thank God for keeping his hands upon my nephew and protecting him.
There seems to be a mind set where people assume the oncoming vehicle will yield
A semi? Who pulls out in front of those? They , like trains, do not stop on a dime. What are people rushing to anyway? Too bad, it was a nice truck.
I hope the person driving get’s better soon.
So sad all these wrecks out there.
