Major Work Now Underway On I-10, Highway 29 Interchange

May 2, 2016

Work is now underway on a $8.5 million project to improve the I-10/U.S. 29 intersection in Escambia County.

This week, crews are placing asphalt on the outside lane of I-10 westbound near the interchange. Lane closures are limited to between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. to minimize the impacts. Drivers are reminded that the speed limit will be reduced to 50 mph during this time.

The work will include:

  • Removing Exit 10A (I-10 westbound exit ramp to U.S. 29 South).
  • Constructing a new exit ramp adjacent to the current Exit 10B – New Exit: 10.
  • Installing a traffic signal on U.S. 29 for I-10 westbound to U.S. 29 South traffic.
  • Widening the bridge on I-10 eastbound to eliminate an immediate left-hand merge from U.S. 29 South.

The project is slated for completion in spring 2017.

The MAIN problem with this whole interchange IS the “suicide ramp” (the ramp for those traveling from the north on Hwy. 29 TRYING to merge into I-10 East bound and not get run over by the 18 wheelers in the fast lane). The state engineers are not even addressing this ramp, except to make the bridge a little wider – Now you can get run over by more than one 18 wheeler. I quit getting on there years ago. I either go to Pine Forest Rd. or go under the interstate (south of I-10) and cross the north bound traffic on 29 to enter I-10 from the safer side. And if you are headed for I-110 you never have to even merge – you have your own lane all the way to I-110. It’s amazing how many cars I see do this!! It’s not the best kept secret anymore!!
I don’t remember any meetings set up to address the public’s concern on this – or maybe I missed the announcement?

So you will still merge into the fast lane of traffic… there will just be more lanes?

Seems and easier fix would be to put in a light at the entrance to the I-10 east, on the south side of I-10 , so that the hwy. 29 south could use the same as the north bound traffic entrance and enter on the right side of I-10 . Much safer, also.

How about only getting rid of the suicide on ramp and instead move the entrance down to the light at Diamond Derry. The traffic light would have to extend across the existing entrance ramp which is only beginning at that point.

Create 2 left turn lanes, one for east and the other for west.

All they would have to do is build an entrance to the existing ramp. Then you would have a long ramp to be at speed at the top. East bound already has their own lane and don’t have to merge.

Guess it must be more “fun” to make a bridge wider.

I am so glad to hear that the bridge is being widened!! Also very glad to hear about the new ramp, I hate getting off that ramp horrible horrible traffic

So you will still merge into the fast lane of traffic… there will just be more lanes? This resolves the issue?

Glad to hear they are finally addressing this issue. ..especially the widening of the bridge area . That horribly narrow/short entrance from 29 onto the eastbound I-10 has been a dangerous area and the reason I do not ever get on I-10 there.
