Holman Prison On Lockdown; Inmate Workers On Strike

May 2, 2016

Alabama Department of Corrections officials report that some inmates at the  Holman Correctional Facility in Atmore, and the Elmore Correctional Facility are refusing to work in their assigned jobs at both facilities.

Inmates at the correctional facilities failed to report to work on Sunday by refusing to help corrections staff in preparing the morning meal.  On Monday, inmates continued to disobey orders to report to their assigned jobs.

The inmates have not given any demands, or a reason for refusing to work.   As a precaution, the correctional facilities are on lockdown with limited inmate movement while ADOC investigates the situation.

Correctional staff are responding by delivering the basic services to all inmates at both facilities.  The facilities are secure, inmates are receiving their daily meals, and their healthcare needs are being met.    No other correctional facilities are on lockdown.

First of not all prisoners are monsters you have ppl who drove with suspended license and did it numerous times and because so sentenced years in prison or teens who drove drunk someone dies involuntarily manslaughter ok so bottom line don’t assume all prisoners are animals no one deserves to be mistreated they shouldn’t be made comfortable but at same time have livable conditions and some officers are scums having a uniform doesn’t mean that there perfect some are violent and sick in the head too ok so please stop with the judging

Scott, false a job is considered mandatory. There is just isn’t enough jobs to go around. Many inmates can’t be trusted with a job due to their criminal offences.

    REGARDING:
“Prison needs a new beginning…starting with the head. The prisoners are speaking n people better listen before it goes south.”

If we listened to all they said, we would know they want to be released to prey on even more people.

On the other hand, they must like it there — or at least some of them — because we can see all the things some others do without winding up in prison.
I suspect some enjoy the male companionship.

David for listening ears and functional minds

Even better, stay stateside and research Tent City in Maricopa County, Arizona. Prisoners wear pink clothing, eat day old bread donated to the county, and live in large communal tents, in the desert. That’s outdoors, folks. And the sheriff has been re-elected several times. Why do we coddle lawbreakers?

FISHERMAN, peanut butter sandwiches is a choice meal for inmates. At least where I work it is!

  6. matchbox on May 3rd, 2016 10:52 am

I agree with yours truly don’t feed them, screw them

  7. scott on May 3rd, 2016 10:17 am

Many of the comments imply the prisoners are in violation of some required action. Having a prison job is not a mandatory requirement of their sentence. At best, prison jobs can be viewed as extracurricular activities — thus freeing inmates from the around-the-clock confinement of their cells. States make use of this labor pool to save taxpayers money.

    It’s always about the money.

Research prisons in Russia and Brazil, and then tell me how bad it is in Atmore.

  9. nod on May 3rd, 2016 8:57 am

TASHA, I am sure the inmates did not treat anyone wrong when they committed the crime that landed them in ptison.

  10. Tasha on May 3rd, 2016 7:37 am

Probably need to be striking it up, requardless of the situation Noone deserves to be mistreated. Prison needs a new beginning…starting with the head. The prisoners are speaking n people better listen before it goes south.

@Holman officer: Start by turning in those that are doing wrong. If you don’t then you are part of the problem also. I know you don’t want to snitch so don’t say anything!!!

  12. say it aint so on May 3rd, 2016 6:39 am

i totally agree with the holman officer until ADOC SEND some one inside and fix this mess the inmates going to keep control of the situation i don’t have a dog in this fight but how did it come to this they getting 3 meal a cot to sleep and health care and whatever free rent thanks to the taxes payers how can they strike is my question????

“I guess he should have been shackled to the wall and fed bread and water, too, though. Huh?”

Looking back, I think he probably should wish he had lived such a life that nobody would have had reason to suspect him.
(Further, sometimes people take part in a crime without doing what can be traced to them, other than identification.)

    David for fewer regrets

The problem is Gov. Bentley. He should have already been removed from office.

After Dozier, don’t you think you ought to pay attention to the large loud cry for help?? Reformation needed. Like Now.

  16. Holman Officer on May 2nd, 2016 10:44 pm

I work at Holman (as of now) I support this 100%. Change is much needed there. This is a concentration camp not a prison. The officers do more dope than these criminals have ever saw on the street. These are people that made mistakes and are paying the time under the Alabamas tax payers money. The officers could comply with rules and regulations and there would be no issue. This problem is going to reoccur until reform hits Holman.

  17. Old man on May 2nd, 2016 9:33 pm

I bet if you don’t feed them for a couple of days they will have a change of heart. Better take control or the guards will start finding employment elsewhere. When yo give prisoners more rights than the guards, your creating a monster.

  18. molino jim on May 2nd, 2016 9:21 pm

@fisherman. I feel the same way. I’m waiting for someone to come on line and talk about all of those who make ugly comments just understand what prison is like. The people who are in prison are all good people— just misunderstood.

  19. Huge Security Problem on May 2nd, 2016 7:24 pm

The internet and any phone signal needs to be blocked inside all prisons. That is a massive security breach. Criminal minds, idle hands and the gang mentality are a huge security issue. Cut that off. Block and Scramble. This is an organized crime with in the system in itself. Criminals are taught law and educated enough to be a threat. Prison is not a place for rehabilitation or to make a wage.

  20. Just Saying on May 2nd, 2016 6:48 pm

Someone close to me spent 12 years in prison for a crime he was later cleared of when DNA evidence proved that he was not the perpetrator (a violent rape). Because of the crime, he was treated heinously by inmates and guards alike (beaten, raped and stabbed while incarcerated for “rehabilitation”). I guess he should have been shackled to the wall and fed bread and water, too, though. Huh?

  21. Tre on May 2nd, 2016 6:37 pm

Because they are human and have the right to fight for their rights.

  22. Pop on May 2nd, 2016 5:55 pm

Can someone tell me why prisoners have right to go on strike? Are they in a union or something?

  23. john on May 2nd, 2016 5:47 pm

Find out which inmate organized the strike, and make him disappear!!!

  24. Old Soldier on May 2nd, 2016 5:44 pm

Oh how I miss Mr. Dees and Mr. Hale.
If you feed give them day old bread and 1 6oz. cup of water.
    For each meal.
They are better taken care of and better fed than the very people who defend our country.
Warden Hale would have and has run ALL outdoors in the weather and fed them what I mentioned above.
Let them get cold and hungry. Better yet starve them!

  25. Citizen on May 2nd, 2016 5:35 pm

I see they are making this an issue of mass incarceration and slave labor. So here we go again with the race card. Well guess what. You are in prison and you do need to work to pay for it. Get over it. Get over all of it. You are where you are and live like you do by your own choices. So am I. Period. I am so over it. Grow up and take responsibility for your own action. Look around. No one to blame but yourself. Yeah I read the reason for the movement well it is beyond ignorant. Continued ignorance. Prison of your own mind to lay blame. I will not fall for that or any excuse. You made and are making your bed, Lie in it with your movement.

  26. Billy D on May 2nd, 2016 4:00 pm

no worky, no eaty unless you get bread and water. better yet, MRE’s are good enough for our soldiers, make a couple of prisoners who want to be idiots split one and eat it cold. Prisoners don’t deserve bargaining power.

  27. bewildered on May 2nd, 2016 3:49 pm

I totally agree – if you don’t work you will not eat. The inmates are running the institution – liberal insanity.

  28. Molino Girl on May 2nd, 2016 3:34 pm

That’s what shock collars and cattle prods are for. Don’t like it? Don’t do stupid stuff to get put in prison.

  29. Bill on May 2nd, 2016 3:32 pm

    Question…can’t u say get to work now……or I’ll shoot u DEAD….u pieces of society that couldn’t conform.

  30. Citizen on May 2nd, 2016 3:32 pm

No work no eat. Even that is Biblical. Execute the death row inmates. Clear out the prisons. Put them in chains against the wall or down in a hole. Separate them. This behavior and leniency from the bottom to the top, from private citizens, to law enforcement, to whining mothers and cuzzins, attorneys, judges circuit and supreme is beyond being tolerated by most. Silent no more.

  31. fisherman on May 2nd, 2016 3:25 pm

I would give them peanut butter sandwiches. The inmates do the cooking so they are actually screwing over themselves.

  32. YoursTruely on May 2nd, 2016 3:05 pm

Don’t feed them any food for a day or two and I bet they will be back to work real fast . an eye for an eye !

  33. Sage 2 on May 2nd, 2016 2:36 pm

…and there you have it! The inmates are running the prison as well as the unconvicted criminals on the outside.
This basically applies to all states and prisons, not just those in Alabama or Florida!
