Pickup Truck Driver Collides With Log Truck

April 22, 2016

A driver was critically injured in a collision with a log truck in Cantonment early Thursday morning.

The man’s pickup apparently hit the log truck on Highway 29 north of Muscogee Road about 5:00 a.m. The driver was transported to a Pensacola hospital by ambulance as a trauma alert. Further details have not been released by the Florida Highway Patrol.

It’s impossible to see through fog & this could’ve easily happened to any driver. I don’t think there’s anything that could’ve prevented it except for the log truck to have flashing lights -we’re praying for the driver and family. It’s a miracle that he’s alive, that’s what matters.

BG This situation had nothing to do with wood debris on the road and yes there are some pieces of tree bark along the way on hwy. 29 and east bound on the side of Muscogee rd. are some long pieces of wood there where the excess length load was cut off and left there. It does need to be cleaned up.
This collision happened because the log truck driver was being more cautious because of the low visibility conditions thus driving slower than the driver coming from behind at a greater speed and did not see the required blinking amber light at the end of the logs nor the protruding logs or the lights on the rear of the trailer in time to avoid the collision. And that is why contacts in these and other situations are called COLLISIONS. GETERDONE

Mick has a point about the wood debris. Look all over Ugly & Dirty Cantonment at
the wood debris everywhere on side the road. The wood trucks should have to pay to have the streets cleaned up. Praying for this man.

My prayers to the driver, I will remember u tonight and for the next few days until we recieve an update.
To anyone who supports these hazardous vehicles, and I lived in the north end 10 years, they are a menance, ill equipped, never carry proper alert lights symbols…get them the hell off the road and find a better means to transpot those much needed loads. Anyone who disagrees, then you will eventually run into this accident or somewhat similar situation…they run not only us off the roads, but shame on them, school busses too…pathetic to stand in support of one of these careless, ill equipped drivers.

Hey this is my daddy and I would really like it if yall would please quit commenting rude stuff about the wreck. He is my daddy and God is with him and God is healing him. Yes it was super foggy and yes he more than likely didn’t see the logs because they are so dark you can’t see them when it’s foggy. I really want yall to please keep the rude comments and any other comments about my dad that has to do with his driving and the truck alone. It is really making my sister and I really upset. We could have lost him but we didn’t because of God. So please just stop being rude and start being considerate of his family that is going through a lot right now!
    Sincerely,
    Laurie Purdy

Prayers go out to both drivers it’s bad situation I know Truck drivers try to provide the public with product demand and try to be as safe as possible it’s part of having a CDL I know I have been there 21yrs otr and I know most drivers will try to avoid a accident if possible and put them selfs in harm’s way to protect the drivers on the road there are many obstacles and hazzards a driver deals with on a day by day basis I pray the driver in the pick up is okay and pray for the truck driver as well it is hard and know driver wants this kind of accident on his mind ..

With the damage to his pick up he is lucky to be alive. He was going much faster than the log truck to do the extensive damage to the metal on the front end of his truck. It had to be a hard hit for the truck driver to know he had been hit and stop because there has been contacts in the past where the truck driver had no idea he had been hit and continued on his way.The small end of the logs are hanging off the rear of the log trailer very low which caused some of them to go through the windshield. After loading the end of these logs are sometime trimmed off to make the ending load more even and not so excessively long. These trucks / trailers are well lit much better than 20 years ago and have a self contained meaning no wires to become detached blinking yellow light attached to the end of the longest logs to alert the drivers approaching the trucks. It had to be the decreased visibility that was the biggest contributor to this tragic collision / accident. R.

Foggy, low visibility , load exceeding the vehicle length obscuring running lights and brake lights,I’m surprised it doesn’t happen more often . Dirty red flags don’t work in those conditions .Flashing red lights should be required at all times.

Mick, there is more than “obviously following too close”. Such as near zero visibility on that morning due to fog in certain parts of that area at the time. Also as the headline states, the driver collided with the truck itself and not debris. Until more information is released (and out of respect for the family), it’s best to share condolences rather than turn a tragedy into a PSA.

  21. Heather on April 22nd, 2016 6:37 am

This man is in in critical condition and has a family. Let’s not criticize his driving that you weren’t there to witness. Yesterday we had dense fog and my friend had an accident. Instead of judgement, how about you offer a little compassion and prayer.

  22. David on April 22nd, 2016 6:17 am

@Mick-Obviously you were in the passenger seat to have this abundance of knowledge
Just pray for the soul and go someone else with your crystal ball- ” increase your following distance”???? You don’t even know what you just said
    Praying for the Mick

  23. mick on April 22nd, 2016 3:12 am

Obviously following too close, too much speed, slow reaction time, with the wood debris that falls off of theses trucks when they are loaded, you want to get around these trucks asap. we have got to share the road with log trucks, so if you can’t get around them, you better increase your following distance…
