Atmore Police Detail High Speed Chase That Ended With Wreck On Bratt Dirt Road

April 25, 2016

[UPDATED] A high speed police chase that began in Atmore Sunday night ended with a rollover crash on a dirt road in Florida.

The Atmore Police Department reportedly chased the Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck into Florida at speeds reaching up to 100 mph on North Highway 99 just before 11 p.m.

Atmore Police said they attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a Chevrolet Colorado on Highway 31 West for an expired tag, no seat belt and no tag lights. Additionally a check of the tag revealed it was on the wrong vehicle. After attempting to initiate the traffic stop, the vehicle sped off at a high rate of speed.

The driver swerved into patrol units several times attempting to run them off the road, according to Atmore Police, while continuing at a high rate of speed and ignoring traffic controls.

As the pursuit continued south on Highway 99, the driver turned onto Cecils Road, a dirt road about 1.2 miles south of the state line in Bratt. The driver, later identified as 36-year old Tabatha Faye Boutwell of Walnut Hill, lost control on the sandy road and overturned into a field about 400 feet later.

The pickup was occupied by Boutwell and two juveniles, all of which initially refused medical treatment. Over an hour after the crash, Boutwell began to complain of injuries and was transported to by Escambia County EMS to Jay Hospital. The two juveniles were taken to a nearby relative’s home.

Boutwell was treated and released into the custody of the Florida Highway Patrol on a charge of reckless driving with property damage. She was booked into the Escambia County Jail in Pensacola with bond set at $2,500. It was later determined that the pickup was stolen earlier in the week from Escambia County, AL.

Charges are pending against Boutwell in Alabama for attempting to commit murder, receiving stolen property, attempting to elude a police officer and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child.

The accident is under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol. The Escambia County (FL) Sheriff’s Office, Escambia County EMS, the Walnut Hill Station of Escambia Fire Rescue and Atmore Ambulance also responded to the incident.

I have family that goes to Atmore all the time and Bratt. She is so selfish she could have killed those kids and somone else. She endangered them and herself. If it was that big of an emergency call 911 on the way and have the cops or paramedic meet you but speeding isn’t the answer. And flight response means she panic when she saw the cops because she knew she was doing something wrong.

Article includes charge “… attempting to commit murder…”
Is this because of endangering the young persons in the truck?
Because of “…swerved into patrol units…”?
Or, is there another victim or intended victim who was involved?

Hope she stays locked up for the safety of the public.
$2,500 bond seems a bit short for the charges filed.

    >>Why is she not in handcuffs?

Because she was not under arrest at the time the photos were taken.

Sorry, I meant to say Chris/David.

@David and Chris, I agree with you both but what if she rolled the truck in the red clay on purpose in an effort to put some red camouflage on it so she could hide. The cops got there before she was done maybe? ;)

@David: Agreed! Perhaps pursue legal proceedings against the maker of the red dirt that the road was covered with.

    Good one, Chris!

And don’t forget to sue the manufacturers of the road graders that were used to make the road and spread that red dirt.

    @ BaeBae:

Flight doesn’t necessarily constitute guilt, but it certainly implies it.

I’m glad she didn’t kill anybody this time, hope she doesn’t decide to have a next time.

Now it’s time to blame everybody but the driver…..

    David for better drivers

She should be charged with reckless endangerment of those kids. I bet they were scared to death! How selfish!

Eyes wide open for the camera!

Well BaeBae, why else would you run from the police? If it was an emergency that still doesn’t give her the right to do 100mph in a 2 ton missle! What makes me the maddest is she had two kids with her! She could’ve hit a tree, hit something or hit someone else and killed herself and those two kids. This ABSOLUTE RECKLESSNESS!

    They say flight constitutes guilt……
