Tornado Causes Major Damage, Several Injured, Many Homes Destroyed (With Photo Gallery)

February 16, 2016

At least three people were injured and dozens of homes were damaged or destroyed as a tornado ripped through the North Escambia area from McDavid and Century Monday afternoon.

One female on Jefferson Avenue was trapped after a mobile home was destroyed and a mobile home was blown into her home. Rescuers and volunteers used tools and even their hands to dig to the women out of the rubble, eventually freeing her and passing her out of the rubble along a human chain. She was transported to an area hospital as a “trauma alert”.

Numerous homes were completely demolished or left uninhabitable.  Authorities continued to search through damaged homes and rubble into the evening.

Century iwas essentially shut down. Many roads are impassible at this time, including Crary, Jefferson, Mayo, Campbell, Elsie Davis. Residents are asked to stay home and not attempt to travel in unsafe conditions. Most of the area with without power, and some areas were without water due to broken water mains from downed trees.

Four North Escambia area schools are closed for Tuesday due to the tornado damage in the area. The closed schools are Northview High, Ernest Ward Middle, Byrneville Elementary and Bratt Elementary.  A decision about Wednesday will be made at a future time and posted on NorthEscambia.com.

No pick ups north of Molino is what I’m being told. Y’all be safe up there. Remember, assume a down line is a power line. And a power line is a live line.

Could have been us if the storm came through a few more miles to the East.

@Puddin: once the extend of damage becomes apparent, excused absences for those affected should not be a problem. It’s one thing that the schools in the county do get right.

I’ve been looking at the damage done, and live close to the damage done in the Ferry Pass area. So it probably won’t just be the schools in the north end that have some closures or students who simply just won’t be able to make it to school for a couple of days.

@William (moderator) — any update on the lady pulled out of the rubble of the mobile home? Was she the one transported as a trauma alert to (which?) Hospital?

  20. No Excuses on February 15th, 2016 8:03 pm

    @Puddin;

Any student that lives in the Northview or Ernest Ward attendance zone but attends another school in the county (such as West Florida High) is also excused from school on Tuesday.

I found this in the article about the four closed schools for tomorrow.

    Praying for all concerned!

  21. Mark on February 15th, 2016 7:25 pm

I would assume if you live in north escambia and attend school in southern escambia you won’t be having your puddin at school tomorrow. Just enjoy your day off and eat an apple

  22. Puddin on February 15th, 2016 7:04 pm

I hear the schools at this end of the county are closed, but what about the kids who live up here but attend school down south? Doesn’t look like the buses are gonna be able to get in there to get anyone.

  23. Judith Deese on February 15th, 2016 7:02 pm

I have many friend in the north end. My prayers are going for all of the folks up there! God bless our fire departments, all the police and rescue that have been and will continue to be, out there until everyone is safe.
