Scott Declares State Of Emergency; State Funds To Be Released

February 22, 2016

Gov. Rick Scott has issued an executive order declaring a state of emergency in Escambia County due to last weeks EF-3 tornado.

The executive order gives the county the ability to request state disaster recovery funding from the Florida Housing Finance Corporation. The executive order is the also the next step in possibly securing federal assistance.

This disaster recovery funding can be utilized for activities as outlined in the county’s Local Housing Assistance Plan, which is used to administer the local State Housing Initiatives Partnership Program, including disaster/mitigation assistance, housing repairs and replacement housing. The Escambia County Board of County Commissioners will submit a request for disaster recovery funding to Florida Housing Finance Corporation this week. Once funding is released from the state, residents will be able to apply for housing repair and replacement costs. More information will be released as funding is available.

Lawson Berry & Mike J….Great stuff. People have to realize there is delegation of state employees to do thier job, and Gov Scott’s wan’t to visit Century, others are trained, promoted and peid to do that legwork. All those who slammed the gov, how’s it feel now?

Right Lawson! Many of these people will criticize the Governor but still take the offered assistance. I am thankful that no one was killed.

Is the Red Cross is helping in this disaster? I’ll make a donation.

What does it profit the state to keep them there, rebuild their homes, and many there will still be in poverty, and on government assistance, with no jobs or income to upkeep their newly renovated home, they will still be in the same situation. Governor Scott, if he had the power this would be a prime opportunity to relocate the people to a better area economically, and let the town die like it should!!

Wouldn’t it be nice if someone just thanked the Governor for acting in a timely manner. I know folks want to be “looked in the eye”, but he got all the information he needed to act, and he did! Thank you Governor Scott!

Is there a shelter reopening and temporary housing being made available for immediate needs? What is going on with people whose houses were destroyed and condemned with no utilities able to be turned on. I can see they want to stay with their possessions but they need basic requirement met especially in this weather. It is frightening.

I feel a bit emotional, through all this, this community has a life and I could fee l the relief with in the community when I was in the grocery store, people are preparing for tomorrow but there is a new hope. I think we may have witnessed something special be reborn here. Perhaps some of the dream realized.

Amazing how fast the “guvner” acted isn’t it? Why couldn’t he travel the additional 50 miles to see the devastation in person when he was so close that day. Very disappointed in his leadership.
