Gov. Rick Scott Tours Tornado Damage In Century, Pensacola (With Photo Gallery)

February 25, 2016

After touring Tuesday night’s tornado damage in Pensacola, Gov. Rick Scott headed north to see the recovery efforts from last week’s EF-3 tornado in Century.

The governor walked through the hardest hit areas, stopping to talk with residents and recovery workers. He was accompanied by an entourage of officials, including Mayor Freddie McCall, Pensacola Mayor Ashton Hayward, Sheriff David Morgan, County Administrator Jack Brown, Commissioner Steven Barry, Century Council President Ben Boutwell and others.

“We have declared a state of emergency, and we are providing some emergency funds from the state. I know the county is doing their part….everybody is doing their part,” Scott told NorthEscambia.com.  The amount of damage from the Century area tornado does not meet the threshold for FEMA funding, but state housing dollars may become available.

Scott spent about 45 minutes walking several streets in Century. Several residents met Scott outside their damaged homes. Some seemed surprised to see the governor and welcomed him, while others questioned why it took over a week, and a second disaster in Pensacola, for him to visit. Along the way, he asked residents about their well-being, and if they had the basics like food, power and water.

He asked about the age of the houses, particularly on Front Street, where he was told the homes date back about a hundred years when they were built by the Alger-Sullivan Lumber Company. He stopped by the Century Pharmacy and met with Pharmacist Julie Booth, and made his away inside the Methodist church knocked off of its foundation by  the tornado.

“You just feel sorry for each of these individuals, and we are blessed that nobody died. We want to do what we can to help them get their lives back in order. But you just feel so sorry for them, Scott said.

    REGARDING:
“you called Rick Scott a gentleman!”

I try to speak respectfully, it does me little harm.

” You are clueless, my friend.”

I get that a lot, the first part anyway.

“you whine about “hiding” behind a false name, for the very purpose of badmouthing him.”

I never whine. I recognized and acknowledged there can be good reason for it. My point remains that evidence doesn’t support the claim.

” your silly sign offs.(a little pretentious, don’t you think? As if you’re brain is better than anyone else’s).”

Not EVERYBODY but some, fo’ sho’. You have my regretful permission to skip them. (and it’s “your”)

” I PROMISE you, I would square off with this heartless man and “set him straight”.”

Then it is a shame he came secretly and you missed your chance.

“you have displayed your true feelings in regards to your political values and that you support a man who is a crook!”

Obviously not since I voted for Fariq in preference both times. (Check the Byrneville vote, I doubt he got more than one vote either time.) As far as I’m concerned, our governor’s a thief for stealing from us contractual guarantees. If I’m fired for saying so, so be it. My name’s at the top of this note.

    “David for “silly snippets” ”
    and better people
    and a joyful life

JJ – great post – You nailed Gov. Flim Flam on the head with your comments.

  3. Lynn on February 26th, 2016 8:53 am

I am not crazy about Scott but one thing I am sure of is no matter what he does some of you would find fault with it. He is darned if he does and darned if he doesn’t.

@David Huie Green for anything silly:

Hey David, there are numerous things wrong with your post. First, you called Rick Scott a gentleman! You are clueless, my friend. Second, you whine about “hiding” behind a false name, for the very purpose of badmouthing him. News flash, some people that post about this crook are State employees and there are policies in place that call for employee termination if you “badmouth” your Governor. (google it)

I usually enjoy your comments, except for your silly sign offs.(a little pretentious, don’t you think? As if you’re brain is better than anyone else’s).

Your other comment, Hiding one’s identity may be prudent but it really doesn’t support the claim one would face Governor Scott face-to-face and set him straight” doesn’t really make sense. Please explain exactly “what” doesn’t support the claim to go face to face with a criminal. Do you mean hiding one’s identity? Be more specific because I do not see the nexus. I PROMISE you, I would square off with this heartless man and “set him straight”.

Like I said earlier, we should NOT fear him! You might, but I don’t!

You’re standing with me has dropped a few notches :( I do enjoy your logic, most of the time. However, this time you have displayed your true feelings in regards to your political values and that you support a man who is a crook!

Hey David, we’re still good, you and I. Just ease up on the David for “silly snippets”.

Thanks for coming to Century and for your work to bring jobs and tourist dollars to the state. Thanks for sharing in our time of need. I love the landscaping and palms in the area. It makes me feel hopeful and proud to see them at the Welcome sign. May God bless and help us all in overcoming this disaster in all Escambia County and may this unite and strengthen us for the better.

  6. Y'all missed the point on February 25th, 2016 8:46 pm

Well, I am glad to see Gov. Scott go to Century and observe first hand the damage. There are laws about funding and FEMA, so what did y’all expect him to do? Wave a magic wand and fix everything? It is good for the Govenor to see these things first hand. He may not have been up here before, but coming up puts a personal investment in his mind. He can see it, get a feel for it…and he was doing an assessment in his mind. This might not seem like much now but this trip could be valuable for Century in the future. Instead of being negative, we should be grateful he got to see up here for himself. As for him being in town last week but not coming to Century, sometimes the time restraints cause a person to have to curb somewhere. But he came up here now. And what did a week later matter? Was the damage more or less in this past week? At a time like this, we should show understanding and compassion. For everyone.

    “@John, again:
“many of you would not say to his face what you are saying on this forum”
Really? And why do you think that? ”

It would be easier to disprove if false names weren’t being used to badmouth the gentleman.

Hiding one’s identity may be prudent but it really doesn’t support the claim one would face Governor Scott face-to-face and set him straight.

Regardless, this part is absolutely true:
“Rick Scott was elected by us, not appointed by the Queen of England. We are NOT supposed to fear our representatives and cower as they walk by. ”

    David for supporting evidence
and proper respect to public servants
(neither too much nor too little)

    >>>> Sheriff Morgan was in Century.
In fact he was there shortly after the tornado passed. He was there for a long time helping.

Its going to be conundrum when the Trump Stumpers realize Scott may be his running mate..

Hopefully the attention brought to the area will encourage someone to look at the property available particularly the 40 acres on the river and railroad and this may spark a new economic boom for this quaint beautiful town of Century Florida. Yes places like this still do exist. The gateway to the emerald coast yet small town hidden gem waiting to rediscovered.b

These are the most comprehensive close view pictures of the E3 devastation in Pensacola. Thank you for this excellent photographic record. Your coverage of the Century area E2 was also exemplary.

    John,
OK, you got me, I do like my wine but it has to be the No Added Sulfite kind, so it doesn’t give me a headache. As far as being afraid to tell it like it is to the face of Governor Flim Flam, well I’d welcome the opportunity. His company stole billions from Medicare, paid a record fine for it and he personally had to plead the 5th, 75 times in the court cases that followed his scam. That was our tax money they were stealing and anyone who doesn’t get angry at that, must not pay taxes!

When did it become so important for a photo-op? Why do we now except this from our politicians? I believe the citizens of effected areas should be more upset if immediate relief efforts had not been available. Politicians play a part in making sure the process of Fema and Federal assistance gets started aside from that a caravan of politicians would just be in the way which is what they normally are. Lastly, no matter what a politician can accomplish with a visit—-it’s the cooperation and spirit of a community that accomplishes what’s needed to be done and that my friends is worth far more than any photo-op.

  14. tg on February 25th, 2016 8:45 am

John he probably thought Gov Bentley had taken care of it.

  15. JJ on February 25th, 2016 8:35 am

    @John, again:
“many of you would not say to his face what you are saying on this forum”

Really? And why do you think that? Rick Scott’s money and powerful position means absolutely nothing to me, period. He does not intimidate me and I doubt he intimidates many of our citizens.

Rick Scott was elected by us, not appointed by the Queen of England. We are NOT supposed to fear our representatives and cower as they walk by. You may want to, but I’ll be dang if I do!

Don’t think for one minute that if he were to approach me and stick out his hand, I would shame him worse than his momma ever did!

    You need to reflect, sir!

  16. JJ on February 25th, 2016 8:29 am

@John: “In my opinion, I don’t think the Governor Scott could do anything to make any of you winer’s happy”

Sir, I take offense to you calling our good citizens “winers” (which you spelled wrong, BTW). For some unknown reason, you are a supporter of his. It’s obvious that a man’s character means nothing to you, in order to represent our State. I won’t go into everything that is wrong about this rich man and his mindset. But, I will say that he disrespected the town of Century, even more than the first time, by going there, the second time.

We don’t need him over here. Remember the time, early on in his reign, when he thought FL ended at Panama City? Seriously, he did.

Rick Scott is bad news for us and always has been. People like you are the problem!

  17. Jimmy wood on February 25th, 2016 8:28 am

To me it was rude it was a week later but he look at century was poor but in heart we are rich in god love

  18. john on February 25th, 2016 5:46 am

In my opinion, I don’t think the Governor Scott could do anything to make any of you winer’s happy, and many of you would not say to his face what you are saying on this forum, in my opinion, it speaks volumes that he came here in the first place, simply because of the scale of the event, and the size of the state. I think God their was no loss of life after this storm, because that would be the real tragedy.

  19. C. Huffman on February 24th, 2016 9:38 pm

Please let me clarify one point. I did not point out the Moorings Apts as low income for the purposes of anything against those who live there. My point was … It was the perfect backdrop for his photo opp.

  20. C. Huffman on February 24th, 2016 9:35 pm

Here is my take on Gov Scott. I live in southern Santa Rosa county. I have friends who’s house in Pensacola was severely damaged by the tornado on Tuesday. Thankfully they are okay. Gov Scott didn’t care enough tour the damage in Century a week ago even though he was “in town”. That speaks volumes about his concern for the citizens of Century and NW Florida in general. A tornado hits Pensacola and he is here touring the next day. Do you realize where he toured the damage? He toured a lower income apartment complex on Old Spanish Trail off of Olive Rd. I lived the area for a LONG time. It is the back gate to the GE plant (also damaged by the tornado). You can see the plant from Old Spanish Trail Rd. He didn’t give a darn about the individuals of the apartment complex, Harbor Square neighborhood, Northpointe’ neighborhood, or any of the other neighborhoods affected by the storm. His primary concern was GE. That is it. Period. And the photo opp in Century was an insult to the people who live there. It was nothing more than a lousy thinly veiled attempt at looking concerned about the citizens. Please don’t give me the argument that he was look out for the jobs. I just will not believe you. Rant done.

    >>>Morgan hadn’t been to Century either!

Morgan had been to Century Monday evening after the tornado

  22. M in Bratt on February 24th, 2016 6:20 pm

Who let the cat out of the bag and told Gov. Scott how to find Century?

  23. ProudArmyParent on February 24th, 2016 5:29 pm

Amazing it took a tornado in Pensacola to get Rick Scott to tour Century. I listened to this man say he spoke to Sheriff Morgan and got his information from him. How would David Morgan know anything? Morgan hadn’t been to Century either!

These storms will continue to be a more common aspect of are lives I am afraid. As research indicates 2015 was the hottest year on record for the entire world. As the world heats up moisture will increase in the atmosphere (greenhouse effect) and storms will gain intensity. NOAA or any other internationally recognized weather service will back this up easily. Some regions will see an increase in extreme weather while some areas may see drought conditions as the jet stream shifts and weather patterns change from the the extreme increase in Co2 levels that is the highest in at least 800,000 years.

  25. Well on February 24th, 2016 4:31 pm

Welcome to our little part of the state Governor.

    Glad you could make it.
