Train Blocks Numerous Cantonment Crossings

January 28, 2016

A stopped CSX train in Cantonment blocked numerous crossings this morning along Highway 95, including Countri Lane and Woodbury, for hours.

Officials say that according to CSX the train was “incapacitated”. The train was moved south, unblocking all crossings in the Cantonment area by 12:45 p.m.

Residents trapped in their neighborhoods said that the train was there since about 7 a.m. While the crossings were blocked, Escambia Fire Rescue was unable to get a fire truck to a reported medical emergency on Woodbury; however, the call turned out to be a false alarm.

Well I’ve been sitting here since a little after 5 o’clock this morning waiting on a train to pass about ten till six it stops and has been for a while no signs of it moving anytime soon it’s as if they made sure that they blocked every road in to cottage hill before stoping the train I understand why this hasn’t been dealt with already , oh wait I know why !! Because none of the counties people live in this area they don’t have to worry about it At all so it’s no big deal to them that we are late for our jobs and possibly will lose them it’s ok to them because it’s not their money lost that could have paid a bill or bought a meal for their children , this is b.s and it’s getting really old to have to call in to work because of a train kids missing their education because of this , emergency officials can’t get to a person in need because of it when is this problem gonna be fixed

Stop a train for a Whataburger????
Wish I could stop ANYTHING for a Whataburger in Nebraska!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have a crossing here by my rural Nebraska home. Except for a derailment, it has never been blocked.

  3. Somebody who knows on January 30th, 2016 3:09 am

Marsha, u have no idea what you are talking about, yes your correct about, if u can’t build air pressure you CAN’T MOVE a train! Please get facts before calling people lazy.

  4. marsha on January 29th, 2016 10:01 pm

I don’t live on the wrong side of the tracks.the problem is the train workers don’t do their job.if they are there more than 15 minutes they are to break the train apart but they are to lazy to do it

  5. Belinda on January 29th, 2016 1:28 pm

I don’t know if the trains are inspected periodically for cracks or breaks on the structures, but if not, perhaps this is an option. Does the DOT require this? If you call 877-835-5279 option 3, you will get to speak with a person, not a recording, and they can tell you if you will be reimbursed for a days work missed.

  6. Just Saying on January 29th, 2016 9:42 am

The problem here is that you choose to live on the wrong side of the tracks. I lived on Woodbury for 15 yrs. and the same problem existed back than. I have been moved from there for 17 yrs. Lets see that 32 years later an still no change. GOOD LUCK!!!!.

CXS will do nothing until it starts costing them MONEY. Why is the laws that are already in place not enforced? It’s true that trains do break down sometime. But CXS blocks roads on a daily basis. The politicians and cops needs to get off their rear ends and do their job.

  8. Falling on death ears on January 29th, 2016 8:53 am

CSX doesn’t care guys. As long as there not blocking CSX upper management homes they don’t care. And these small time politicians around here don’t care as long as it doesn’t effect them. I heard the safety guy for pcola Weaver on the news say it could have been a derailment and that we should be more prepared. I guess we should prepare for that and I guess we should prepare for earthquakes, atomic bombs, a zombie apocalypse, and any other unforeseen problems that could occur.

    >>>Cut a road from Wishbone to
Becks lake Road, only about one fourth of a mile, thus allowing an out for residents in both areas

Great idea, except Beck’s Lake was also blocked.

Cut a road from Wishbone to
Becks lake Road, only about one fourth of a mile, thus allowing an out for residents in both areas. And yes, the state needs to move the tracks across Highway 29 further south and put an overpass. They will not consider this until people die and then still do nothing. Leaders. Yeah right! People have good workable solutions. Politians delay until next election and promise once again to fix it. Yeah right.

You know I sat there waiting for 2 hours and finally I couldn’t take it any more I had a screaming baby in the back seat and a sick child at school. I don’t understand why those trains have to be so long. We all see how much money CSX profits on the Internet, they can afford to run more trains that are shorter that won’t block traffic for five hours. And not to mention there was an emergency vehicle that couldn’t get thru either. I find it really annoying that we the public have to sit and wait for a train for five hours. Next time I’ll take my screaming baby and let her sit on the train maybe that will hurry them up.

  12. Yup on January 28th, 2016 9:34 pm

This is exactly what Csx doesn’t care about. They have started running longer trains to cut back on staff and the number of trains being run. This has not only ruined rail family’s livelihood but also put this hindrance on the general public. This didn’t happen as much a while back now this company is showing its true roots. Stand up and shout

  13. Melodies4us on January 28th, 2016 8:55 pm

The county needs to build an overpass over the RR crossing by the paper mill .

  14. Jake on January 28th, 2016 8:31 pm

Seems to me the people who are complaining live on the wrong side of the tracks. Put three 53 foot semis on the road, give me the trains anydayand get off Csx’s back account of a now and then problem.

  15. john on January 28th, 2016 8:17 pm

They block Airport Blvd. all the time and sometimes 45min. to 1hour. If you come up to airport and it is blocked, you had just better turn around, because you will be there a looooong while!!!

  16. Jay Camac on January 28th, 2016 8:14 pm

This issue is covered by Escambia County Ordinance 94-161.

  17. Mike on January 28th, 2016 7:26 pm

Hey, nobody twisted your arm & made you live there. Trains break down sometimes, get over it.

I WAS STUCK ON BECKS LAKE FOR 3 HRS. TODAY..MAKES IT HARD TO DO MY WORK…I AM RETIRED AND OWN A SMALL BUSINESS..REALLY TUFF ON PEOPLE WHO HAVE BOSSES AND CAN’T GET TO WORK..BUT WORSE THAN THAT…ECUA HAS NOW BLOCKED THE ONLY WAYS WE USED TO BE ABLE TO GET OUT WHEN TRACK IS BLOCKED..THEY COULD ALLOW US TO GO VIA SPRING LAKE AND THE NEW ECUA TREATMENT PLANT…ANOTHER WAY IS THRU ELDER LANE ON A DIRT ROAD OVER TO KATHLEEN IN GONZALEZ…THE ONLY WAY FOR EMERGENCY MEDICAL WOU

  19. Marsha on January 28th, 2016 6:45 pm

This is a every day problem in molino and it is for hours.school buses can’t get thru.emergency can’t get thru.they will sit here for hours.the workers don’t want to get off their lazy butts and break the train apart

  20. Contact your representatives for action on January 28th, 2016 6:33 pm

Class action lawsuit is a great idea, but we would have the burden of proving how we were harmed. Until one of our loved ones loses their life because of CSX, law suits will likely be futile.

    BUT

Train companies are regulated by the Federal Government. Contact Jeff Miller’s office and file a formal complaint. This will start a Congressional Investigation including additional inspections of CSX operations, maintenance and records. Trust me, this is the only way we are going to get CSX’s attention.

  21. jeeperman on January 28th, 2016 5:41 pm

The only law on the books in Florida about blocking a grade crossing has no penalties for doing so. So there is basically no law since there is no penalty.
There is also no federal law about doing the same.

    Folk,
    The next time this happen,
pick up your cell phone and call 911
and get the FHP / ECSO on the line…Let them
start writing tickets for blocking a railroad crossing..
There is a law on the book about blocking crossing !!!!!!

  23. Someone who knows on January 28th, 2016 4:45 pm

I’m telling u guys, it’s gonna take more than some phone calls to CSX to get something done, contact Rick Scott!! CSX don’t care about anything but making money. Thy are mistreating there employees and communities just to make a dime! Trust me on this, don’t blame the crews, we are fed up ourselves!

  24. Molino Mom on January 28th, 2016 4:37 pm

I sent an E-mail to FDOT along w/pics, don’t know if it will do any good, but I feel better.

  25. RIDICULOUS on January 28th, 2016 4:34 pm

CSX # 1-800-232-0144 to report emergency!!! Every time they block the crossings and delay you CALL!!!

  26. Jr on January 28th, 2016 2:45 pm

Well up here in Century, they stop the train to go to Whataburger. the train will have every crossing from Salters Lake rd. to Hecker rd. blocked. If a emergency vehicle needed to get down here they would have to go up to hwy. 4 east and come back south, and this isn’t a one time thing. They must dine in because they will have all four crossings blocked for over an hour. there’s no reason they couldn’t stop in the CSX yard in Flomaton and drive back to anywhere in town they want to eat. I’m sure CSX has plenty of vehicles up there they could use.

  27. No need to call on January 28th, 2016 1:00 pm

CALLING CSX IS A WASTE OF TIME! We’ve had problems with CSX trains that are just setting idling on the tracks for days at a time, for years and have made numerous calls and had no explanations. I did one time receive a call telling me that it was a waste of time calling. I still call to document the problem and take pictures. Can’t say it has done any good.

Basically they are using the rails as a rail yard until they are ready to move the trains, due to not having enough workers or don’t really need to make delivery at this time. It is true the rails where here first but over the years they have never just blocked the crossing and left with the engine idling for days at a time with no regard for others, they may own the rails but they have no right to cause harm to others from lack of sleep or can’t get out .

My suggestion, lawyer and class action . CSX HAS HAD THEIR WAY FAR TO LONG!

  28. George on January 28th, 2016 12:25 pm

It’s all business … CSX has combined trains in an attempt to move more freight while using fewer crews and fewer engines thus “increasing effenciy”. This at the expense of the general public. Today’s delay is far from over, this train will eventually leave Cantonment and continue into Pensacola where it will block Airport blvd.

  29. Jf on January 28th, 2016 12:10 pm

There’s a small blue sign at each crossing with a phone #. Call that # and raise sand then turn around and call it again and raise more sand. Nothing probably won’t be done but at least they’ll know.

  30. Brandy on January 28th, 2016 12:08 pm

    The train is moved, finally!

  31. XD9RACER on January 28th, 2016 12:06 pm

Back some time ago there was a little cut through south of the Woodbury subdivision that would take you to Becks Lake road but it has been blocked off. There could be another one cut south of Countri Lane where it could take you south to numerous other roads to get across the tracks if it wasn’t blocked there or on down to Chemstrand road or on down to Kings Field road to take you to the east then on to where you need to go. It is bad enough when the train can’t go but will at some time later but look how it would be if it derailed and spilled ammonia or other toxic life threatening material. PANDAMONIUM. CSX would be billed for a Helicopter ride incase of Emergency.

  34. Aggravated on January 28th, 2016 11:06 am

Is CSX going to pay for the peoples lost wages today?

  35. Celina Robinson on January 28th, 2016 11:03 am

This is horrible!!! I have lived in this area for years and this issue seems to continuously worsen. We have to pray for good health and that our houses won’t catch fire for we would be doomed. No EMS or fire truck could get to us. This is my main concern. My elderly father lives with me and I fear the train will hinder the care needed if something were to happen. Having to call in to work because I will be late or not being able to go at all because of this. Promises have been made by many politicians and others for years to have this corrected but still NOTHING!. Something has to be done before a fatality crushes all of us who are on the WRONG side of the tracks. Angry, scared, and frustrated.

  36. Debbie on January 28th, 2016 10:42 am

This is happening way to often lately. A little frightening and frustrating.
